Import of Rhino file

Imagix

Recommended Posts

I have to open a Rhino file in FormZ. I can, but while some object look good, some seems inverted and unfixable. I think some are skipped too.

Any tips importing Rhino files? I have Rhino but I am struggling to find another format that works well between the two.

Hi Imagix,

DWG generally works best when exchanging geometry with Rhino.  Does that work for you?

And if you have a different format that is not working so well, feel free to send it so we can take a look and see what is going on there...

How to fix this on a larger scale ? (i.e. on Rhino import: how to get "solids" into Z ?)

(Seems the reverse tool can never get it right - some Rhino geometry/object is always "see through")

There was an option to "select all" and the convert geometry to "double sided" that worked miracles in Z once....

Exporting from Rhino I found DWG with option "solids 2004" produced the best results so far.

I import many Rhino objects which have misc. reversed faces.  These objects don't repair with the Object Doctor.  It would be useful if Object Doctor had an option which would search out flipped normals and reverse them.

In the meantime, you can export .igs (.iges), .dwg, or .stp (step) files from Rhino and upon import, toggle the "construct 3D solids" option to OFF.  When they show up in FormZ each face will be a separate object.  Using the Stitch Tool will automatically reverse the flipped faces and rebuild the objects back to solids or complete surfaces.

Before we get into the import/export "best practice" discussion again (remember evans "cheat sheet" ?):

I dont use rhino but get larger 3dm files sent, which I have to integrate into my FZ project.

FZ has the option to import 3dm files.

Is that option not meant to be able to directly import a .3dm model, without having to use rhino (i.e. trial) and exporting a different format in the first place ?

In my experience even though a CAD application has the ability to import/export a specific file format, it rarely works flawlessly in every case.

Imagix owns Rhino and was struggling to find a format that works well between Form Z and Rhino.

ACIS SAT is generally very reliable.
