Best practices for door/window frames?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to take a cross-section and extrude it around a door opening. 

 

Same thing would likely apply to other openings...

 

One issue I had is that I can't seem to select the cross-section and then the verticals and top edges of a door frame to sweep.

 

Any suggestions?

Andrew,

 

Use the axial sweep tool for this and build your source shape in place. Use a 3 segment "arch" as your path.

To clarify a bit, the 3 segments of your path should be one object, to simplify selection.

Hi Joe - that's the problem; I can't select consecutive edges to form path of the doorframe.

Sounds like your pick options is not set to "Auto Pick" and it's only selecting edges?

Hi guys - 

 

I'm able to pick the cross section, but only the vertical of the door frame; I need to be able to select the vertical, horizontal across the top, and the vertical down the other side. I'd rather not create a separate object just to sweep if I don't have to.

Take a look at the video for this tool at about the 5 min mark and see how Matthew creates a path from desired object.

 

Still a little more work than creating the three segments from scratch I think, you decide.

 

From what I can tell, only one additional click is accepted after the source shape is selected (so it would have to be the complete path you desire.
