Polymesh versus Convert Smooth Object

I have some cylinders (actually crenelated castle towers) which are smooth objects, The towers are mapped cylindrically and then the ends and the crenelations are mapped flat and aligned. I now want to convert these to facetted surfaces.

If I do it by polymeshing, which lets me choose the facetting scheme, the mapping and materials all become cylindrical, blowing away all of work done aligning the materials. This does not happen if I chose to convert the objects via the convert tool, but then I don't have control over the degree of facing or whether I'd prefer not to have triangulation everywhere.

Is there any way around this? I want cleanly facetted objects with as little triangulation as possible.

Thanks,

Doug

Yep that does it perfectly... Knew there had to be a trick somewhere, just couldn't figure out where it was hidden.

Any way to make the polymesh tool not destroy the mapping?

Many thanks,

Doug
