Hutchy1980
Hi Tech, I'm having difficulty making a swept object look smooth. I'm creating a handle for a jug by sweeping a polygon shape along a path. Despite having smooth ticked when creating the sweep it looks very faceted. Please see attached images. Is there another method to do this or am i doing this wrong? Tech
Hi Hutchy, We can't tell from the image alone. Please copy the source and path shapes into a New Project, try to Sweep it as you would like, Save the file, Zip it, and use the More Reply Options (below on the right) to post the file here so we can help. Tech
Hi Hutchy, Your Source Shape is a NURBS Curve with Degree = 1. (Degree = 1 means "straight" with no curvature -- or Facetted if you like.) Degree = 2 or 3 will give the shape curvature. (Going beyond 4 or 5 will create a very complex shape and should be avoided unless you have a very specific need (which is very rare).) In the Sweep Dialog, choose Degree = 2 and you should see a smooth result like this: Note also that this source shape has 200 control points, which is a lot more than you need. Try reducing that to 20 or 40 (with the NURBS Curve Reconstruct tool on the source shape -- or in the Sweep Dialog itself -- right below the Degree field). Does that help? Hutchy1980
Hi Tech, That's interesting, i don't have the degree option in my sweep dialog?!
Hutchy1980
Ah i see the degree option appears after sweeping! It still looks faceted when you change the degree, so i don't think this is the solution!
Tech
Hi Hutchy, Oops, sorry, the source shape having Degree = 1 is still affecting this. Reconstruct this first: Then Sweep and it should look like this: Is that what you want? (And here is our file...) Test2.zip
Hutchy1980
Yep that worked, thanks! 2nd question, how can i round the faces where the handle meets the body, i've tried the round faces tool and the trim\split tool with rounding applied? Tech
Hi Hutchy, Your source shape has a hard corner on the right side that prevents the rounding: Cut your shape in half, delete the right side, mirror the left, and Union those good halves together. Next, Thicken the "cup" part, Difference the cup from the handle, Copy that result, Undo, Paste, and Union these two objects together. Then you can round it: Is that what you want? Hutchy1980
Ok so i got to 'differnce the cup from the handle' then i copied the result, and undo the difference. So which two objects do i union, the handle and one of the cups or the two cups? Sorry bit confused?
Tech
You want to Union the Thickened pitcher to the handle that you Differenced (so it does not have the parts on the inside of the pitcher). So after you Copy, and Undo, then Paste that object (and if you want you can first Pick the original part of the handle so when you Paste that is replaced with the Differenced one). Hutchy1980
When i try to round the final object i get the message "unable to complete smooth modeling operation"??? Test3.zip
Tech
Hutchy, Your shape has some kinks in it and the controls are all bunched up: (This will greatly limit the size of the rounding that can be applied to the shape.) Please see the model we posted above and be very careful to follow the steps outlined there to create a smooth shape that will round properly.
