Skin tool problem

I am new to the Skin tool and don't understand the error message I am getting. What am I doing wrong?

Well, I got something, but I doubt it is what you intend.

Closer, but probably still not what you are looking for.  If you are looking for something with a tight corner on the Y axis, you probably are going to need to do it in a multi step process.  split and stitch comes to mind.
