DJAB
Hi Guys, Any advice greatly appreciated, how could I model this chair? I suppose extrude box, sub D? Is anyone aware of any tutorials showing similar things? Andy
Des
Hi Andy, I'd be interested to see other uZers approach to model this too. I had a ten minute attempt on the chair back where I sweeped a facetted closed surface on a facetted path with reduction to .6. (left of image). I split it into separate parts (right of image) and used subdivision on each part with the sharpness on the sides set to 70%. This is the result (centre of image). Maybe with a bit of tweaking you could make it look more like your image. Other than that, maybe skinning is the way to go and would probably give more accurate results. Maybe Anton could throw some light on this as he's done some nice soft furniture before? Des ChairTEst.fmz.zip
DJAB
Hi Des, Thats great, and thanks for sharing your file! Sorry but I dont understand what you did? Can you do a breakdown / tutorial? Would really appreciate any help! Andy
FZnoob
I would sub-d it. I don't think it would be all that difficult.
FZnoob
I finally had a few minutes to give this a quick go. I just eyeballed it, but with a little time I think it could look nice

FZnoob
Looks great FZnoob! Thank you Tech. Like I said, with a little tweaking it could be very convincing. For the "back" I just drew a series of shapes, applied the sub-d, then bridged them together. After that, I applied the radial bend deformer to get the semi circular shape. The thing that I like about sub-d is how the mesh remains "alive" and is very easy to continue manipulating.
FZnoob
I had a little time to work on this. It's pretty close to the original. I did take a few liberties, like making the sweep on the back a bit more dramatic. It really isn't all that difficult to do.

FZnoob
Bravo FZnoob! Very convincing model. I think you should change your name from FZnoob to FZexpert now Hi Des, thank you my friend for the kind words. Well, I am not an architect or industrial designer like you guys, so I take your compliment in high regard. I am just a simple graphics guy who has a decent understanding of sub-d modeling, after having dabbled in it for many years.
FZnoob
Hi FZnoob, Thanks for helping Andy with his file. If possible, can you please post your steps here so that all may benefit from your explorations? (Thanks in advance!) I have sent Andy a tutorial on the base, and I will get to how I did the chair "back" as soon as I can. Once I am sure it is clear, and easy to understand I will post it for everyone. FZnoob
I just posted part 1 in the "tutorials" section of the forum. The title is "Model a leather chair with sub-division Pt1". As noted, I will get part 2 posted as soon as I get time.
FZnoob
I just uploaded part 2 to the tutorials section of the forum. "Modeling a leather chair with sub-division Pt2" Hopefully, I made it clear enough for everyone to understand.
FZnoob
I just uploaded part 3 to the tutorials section of the forum. "Modeling a leather chair with sub-division Pt3" The tutorial ended up taking a lot longer than the model itself, because I wasn't sure how much detail I needed to go into. I tried to find a happy medium. If anyone found this helpful, and would like to see a few other examples, let me know and I will see what I can do. It all depends on my workload.
