It took 4 minutes to get this model to Layout

Recommended Posts

This is not unusual behavior from FormZ 3d to Layout. I had a 3D model recently that took over an hour before it would draw in Layout. I just went on about other tasks until it was done. It was a fairly simple model to begin with. This is one of the many reasons Layout is woefully inadequate. I really wish this was a workable tool in the arsenal.

Hi Anton,

Yes, this is taking longer than one would expect on first glance.  In the Frame Parameters, if we change the Splines and Arcs to Polylines, that makes it 75% faster for us:

Click the Display Options and uncheck Line Style and Weight, and it should be ~75% faster.

And of course eliminating small / unnecessary details (or putting them on their own turned off layer) can increase performance further.

Thanks again for sending your file, we will see what we can do to make this as fast as possible for the future.  ;)

Did not help though. Similar file with the settings you advised loads 2-3 minutes. Does not seem to be appropriate time for this simple operation.

Any news on development?

Anton.

Had to Force Quit Layout after 10 minutes with Polylines option. Negative speed increase.

Model has just 16 000 faces. not a big deal really.

Best,

Anton.

Hi Anton,

Yes, we are working on development, but we can't say more at this time, but obviously faster would be preferred.  Updating the Layout does not need to be updated that often, though, does it?  (If you want to work on the model and not have it update, just add a suffix to the end of the file name, and only remove the suffix and resave to the original name to make the Layout update...)

Also, your file is a bit odd in that the model is only a 2d flat drawing, and not really made up of solids or surfaces.  That is also increasing the display generation / update time.

And if you don't need it to update at all, Place the Content Frame, set it up as you like, and then UnGroup the lines within the frame.  They will then become "standard objects" at the same scale as the Frame that was drawn.  (Keep that frame after UnGrouping so any dimensions you apply will also use that scale.

Does that help?

I understand that I don`t need to update drawings all the time and there are workarounds and so on. But also I understand that my workflow needs and contains of drafting about 80/20 with modeling. And I need to make 2D more than 4 times than I need 3D. About the same as a majority of your customers. And since proper Drafting module is abandoned I have to do "odd" models to somehow workaround this.

Also I understand if I will explode of unlink contents of frame I wont be able to draw inside of it because I have no Idea how and why to divide every single dimension of object I draw to 15 or 50 or 25 or 100 or 200 in my head WHILE I HAVE A COMPUTER in front of me. You guys decided this will be a good idea to make me to do it.

You there in AutoDesSys should understand that pretty models with renders is just a fraction of any architect/designer work. Most of the time we are expressing ourselves with drafts, blueprints and tech drawings.

But what I see — you are deaf to our real needs we express for years. And I foresee you will delete this message without replying to it too.

Anton.

+1 to Anton

FormZ modelling is great but most of my paycheck comes from construction docs. and for that I need to purchase a separate license , We use Autocad.
