SoenkeD
It is possible to have smooth and facetted faces in one single object?I made a barrel-like objekt by revolving a spline in stepped mode.I want to have only one corner and the adjacent faces to be smooth as if i revolved the barrel in continous mode (see left version of barrel).is it possible?I tried the rounding tool, but only the corner became round not the 2 faces .... Can the green dashed faces and the cornersegment be modified that they look like the smooth ones of the left objekt?Thank you for help!
AHTOH
What I would do is: to make stepped Revolve and than take source object and Revolve Continuosly to 45° (1/8 of 360 as your barrel has 8 sides). Stich or Union, depending on type of object, resulting shapes. Voila.
SoenkeD
Hello Anton, thank you. that sounds like a very good solution.i will try this tomorrow. Thanks a lotregardsSönke
AHTOH
What is good about this solution — it works. I checked myself
SoenkeD
For me too ;-)Thanks a lot!But i think this method works not for other objekts wich can not be constructed this way.A tool to modifay any sharp corner and adjacent planes to smooth shapes will be nice. I will try it with subdiv.....
SoenkeD
It works with subdiv.i converted the stepped revolved object to a polymesh. then subdiv. And then sharpen some corners 100%.But something akward occures in the upper corners.I have to play with polymesh converting settings i think. Tech
Hi Soenke, That just looks like a minor shading artifact, and not an issue with the geometry. Using the Display Resolution (equivalent of polygon mesh without converting) should clean that up. To make that shape, I would draw an octagon, Fillet the corners, Scale copies and move them vertically, and then NURBS Loft them. Does that help? SoenkeD
Yes it helps, thank you!Still a lot to learn
AHTOH
Hi Soenke. There are many ways to do this in FormZ. I prefer to use the most simple. You get the most clean result this way. Best, Anton.
SoenkeD
Thank you Anton.with given simple Forms there may be such "simple" solutions as written in the posts before. But i am still curious if thre is a function that can round a sharp corner and the adjacent planes on freeform models.I just created a really useless thing. Only for training... ;-)How would the expert round this highlighted corner of this freeform model? The roundtool, i expect, makes only a round corner but the adjacent planes stay flat...?I will need this later for converting a lapstrake/clinker boat to a boat with round hullform...Thanks for help
AHTOH
There are lots of ways to manipulate this corner. Here are just a few of them: - insert segment and sculpt: - round to holdline: - C-Round : - C-Round 2: - and finally plain rounding: There are many another options to do things with this corner. Any simple questions — you are welcome to ask here or by e-mail. Any complex job — I will be more than happy to assist on commertial basis Best, Anton.
