Turning slowly mad ...

Hello,

with 8.0.2 Form.z. Excuse my english, I'm French.

I would like to apply a texture on a face of cube. I try to do that for 2 hours without success ...

I'm a >100 QI person ... It must not be enough ...

Things I tried (shaded work display mode) :

METHOD 1 (Prepick, from doc).

New project. Drawing a cube. Sélecting a face with Pick Tool in face mode.

Nice, the face is selected (red framed). :)

Selecting Map texture tool. Ok, its icon is red framed.

Mapping type "Flat". :)

Affecting a marble texture to material 3.

--> Selected Face doesn't change.

Dragging material 3 on selected face.

--> Selected Face doesn't change. :angry:

Right click on material 3 and click on "Assign picked object this material" (Seem

logical since the face is still selected)

--> Selected Face doesn't change. :angry:

METHOD 2 (Postpick, from doc).

Selecting Map texture tool. Ok, its icon is red framed.

Selecting the face with a left click as usual

---> Impossible :(

Selecting the face with a Shifted left click --> ok (Why shift is needed ?)

Affecting a marble texture to material 4. (at this moment I'm full of hope).

Clicking anywhere in the project (As it is said in doc, I must have try to click

in every cm² of the screen ...)

--> Selected Face doesn't change. :angry:

Dragging material 4 on selected face.

---> Texture is applied on the whole cube (6 faces)

using Flat method. :angry:

Form.Z is a very nice software, with great ideas.

I've been amazed by many tools I used to use

with 3DSMAX and Sketchup that so much more

easy to use with Form.Z. It is the first time I have

the feeling that developpers had really thougt and took

users problems and ease of use ! Nice !!!!  :)

But I'm very disappointed by this placing texture

on a face problem. I don't undestand what happen.

I believe someone will show me what I must do

to perform that task : Do that, and that, and that, ok ...

But for me it is not the real problem. The real problem

is : Why a somewhat used to use 3D software people,

with a >100 QI's not able to apply a texture on a cube

face without having to ask support ?

Best regards,

Falcon.

Hey Falcon,

Just drag the material onto the object to change the color.  Use the Texture Map tool to change the SIZE.  Right click the tool and choose Video to see how it works.

Does that help?

RobertH you saved me ... :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)   I have tears in my eyes (I'm not kidding you).

So know I can select a face and drag a texture on it  !!!  NICE !!

But I have an other pbs;

I would like to put texture 1 on Face 1 and Texture 2 on Face 2.

I'm know able to do that.

But sometimes (not at all my tryings) tuning Texture1 with

edit map tool, tunes also Texture2 !

How can I have too independant textures on the same objects !

on too faces.

Dear Falcon,

Welcome to the forum!

Great, glad you have learned how to pick / color a face.  This should be pretty basic, and if you have not reviewed the Tutorial Videos, we would highly suggest that you go to the Help Menu: Tutorial Videos command, and watch these.  The first 4 are good basic overviews, but if you don't have time to watch those longer videos right now, you can skip over those and begin with the User Interface video.  (The 4th video on Picking will show you how you can Pick a part of an object such as a Face, so you can color it with the Paint tool, or by dragging a material onto it like Robert suggests.)

For creating Texture Groups (so that you can resize the textures independently), get the Map Texture tool, and apply any texture type other than the Best Match Per Object (i.e., perhaps Flat Mapping) to that face, and then the Edit Texture tool will resize that and not the others.  This is explained in more detail in the Help: Tutorial Videos: Texture Mapping video, which you can also access by right clicking on the Texture Map tool and choosing Video.  (You can also right click any tool and choose Manual for a written description of the tool.)  Pausing the videos while you are watching them, and doing what you just saw can be a great way to help remember the content of the videos, and you can rewind the video if there was a detail that you missed...

Hopefully this helps, but please let us know if you have any further questions (and please review the videos as they will answer many questions that you will inevitably have).

Thanck you for responding.

I'm french and I have some difficulties to understand speaken english told

at the speed your help use. So I tried to use written help (doc).

So now after having listen many time spoken help I understood

how I can make to face's textures independant (Map tool + CTRL click), ok.

However, let me make a suggestion. Why not tend to put within reach of the user, using a simple right click, all the properties of an object? When I right click on the face of a object I would like to be able to adjust immediately every properties of  this face. I would like to be able to click on something like "make the texture of this independent face" and get it right away without having to return validate the "texture map" option in a menu, coming back to my object to CTRL right click on it. Why not immediately make available, by a simple right click, all (or the more importants) properties of objects? (face or other)? It would be, for my opinion, much understandable, speedy. The sequence of key "Texture map/CTRL right click" is easy to memorise, but much slower and far less understandable !

Best regards,

Eric.
