Spacer got a reaction from 3dworks in Objects Palette
    Hi,

    This needs changing, IMHO:

Object Palette visibility show all visible even though none are (because when components are in a group it does this..)

When taken out it works as expected:

this may have already been pointed out. It's so basic. Unless I have missed something..
    Bst regards,

Spacer got a reaction from Brantheat in Reduce Mesh cannot work on this object- any ideas?
    HI ,

I'd like to see if I can lighten this object up in Mesh reduce, but although it is a single object (separate toll does nothing), i get a message saying,

"One or more objects selected for Reduce Mesh operation are surface solids, or partial surface solids. these objects need to be converted to single sided first."

But I don't know how. The convert tool is operational on this object.

    Thanks for any ideas-

Spacer got a reaction from Minaabilk in Import OBJ from Turbosquid & Emitter behind lampshade
    Hi,

I have mostly done exterior renderings, and now i have a sries of interiors. I am scrambling to constitute a library of Maxwell optimized furnishings, lamps, etc..

I have an Artemid tolomeo Lamp from Turbosquid and just spent an hour assigning textures, testing etc..

Q1: Is it normal that in OBJ import, There are no separate materials applied to the ojects? Re)assigning seems like I missed something. advice?

Q2: I have a translucent lampshade, and want to put in an emitter. If I put in a small square, it will face down and not light the lampshade like a bulb does. SO do i need to put in a small cube or sphere? If I put it where the bulb is, how to get it to shine through the bulb but not be affected by the bulb, 'physically'?

    Thanks

Spacer got a reaction from Minaabilk in Help with MXM creation from imported maps
    Hi,

I am importing OBJ files from Turbosquid and rebuilding my materials in Maxwell from their maps.
The ".mtl" file for this model says this:

    "# 3ds Max Wavefront OBJ Exporter v0.97b - ©2007 guruware
    # File Created: 14.03.2014 14:15:08

    newmtl wire_000000000
        Ns 32
        d 1
        Tr 0
        Tf 1 1 1
        illum 2
        Ka 0.0000 0.0000 0.0000
        Kd 0.0000 0.0000 0.0000
        Ks 0.3500 0.3500 0.3500
    "

and when i open the OBJ file, there is only one ("wire") material in FZ.

But the model has many materials, however, so I must look at the image of the product from the website an re-create and re-apply it all, hoping at least that the UV mapping will be good (I avoid the "texture Map" tool, etc..)

They are all in ".tif" format, some of which FZ will open, others not (I posted that problem on the regular forum..)

Most materials are pretty straightforwards, but this "rattan" woven material, has many maps (see my SC), and I don't know which goes where. Can someone offer help? especially odd are the tiny little TIFFs of vertical pixels called "Rattan_multiColor_2.tif" and "miltivolor.tif"..
her eis a list of the maps to facilitate any answering:

    multicolor.tif  (1 X 39 px) rattan_A.tif  (2040 X 1966px) rattan_AO.tif  (2040 X 1966px) Rattan_D.tif   (2040 X 1966px) rattan_multiColor2.tif   (1 X 120 px) rattan2_A.tif   (4080 X 3932px) rattan2_AO.tif  (2040 X 1966px) rattan2_D.tif  (4080 X 3932px) rattan2_horizontal_a.tif   (4080 X 3932px) rattan2_vertical_a.tif   (4080 X 3932px)
TEN maps which I assume all go somewhere in the MXM.  At first i thought it was for two sizes since there are two sizes of texture maps, but then there isn't a map for each size...

    Thanks-

    Peter

    Hi All,

Sorry for the lack of response here in the last few weeks. We have been absorbed with the response to V-Ray for form•Z and work in progress on an updated 8.6 and new features and collaborations for form•Z 9.

We have received some great feedback on V-Ray for form•Z. We are really excited the results that form•Z users have been able to achieve in a very short time. Some users have requested additional V-Ray features that were not in our original scope. These will be coming soon along with a few adjustments that you would expect with a new product. Some of these are features that you will find in V-Ray for 3D Studio Max, but not V-Ray for SketchUp or V-Ray for Rhino. We are working on compatibility with the form•Z Imager. pkcn, the card you mention should work with V-Ray for form•Z. How did you conclude that it was not working?

Yes we are a small team, but we love what we do and we care for everyone who uses our creations. Please recognize that the development of V-Ray for form•Z was a huge undertaking and investment that we would not have made if we did not believe in the future of form•Z and its users. Chaos Group creates the plugins for the other solutions so you will naturally see more marketing of these solutions on their site. Expect to see more publicity on V-Ray for form•Z in the coming months.

We are certainly not hibernating. The founders are involved in the company so your speculations are misplaced. We all miss Paul and his efforts on this forum. We will try to do better at following the standard he set. Keep in mind that you can reach us by email at support@form•Z.com as well!

Paul was a hero, he would somehow manage to get to the bottom of every problem and fix it.
More importantly, he would respond to every problem on this forum no matter how trivial.
Historically these were normally user errors but more recently it is now the application that is struggling.
FormZ is getting old and for a small company, this means that the key visionary developers have retired or otherwise moved on.
I also use SharkCAD which very closely resembles Vellum Cobalt. It too is suffering from the similar issues and I don't see either application developing much in the future.

I'm most likely going to replace both FormZ and SharkCAD with SpaceClaim this year, much easier now that I have moved away from Mac Os and iPhones etc.
SpaceClaim seems to sit comfortably between the two and the annual subscription is marginally more than the yearly upgrades for SharkCAD and FormZ.
If Autodessys fix the terrible component system and sort out the interface glitches there would be no need to consider other applications after all these years, but I do not feel my usual optimism going forward.

I find the texture mapping, in general, a little wonky.  When it works, it works well.  But when it doesn't work, it's really frustrating.

I have found that going between "Edit on Face" and "Edit in 3D" can have its perks as opposed to using just one option.  Also, turning off snaps can help with stubborn texture placement.

Nerves are less frayed but I cannot edit my post.
These issues and more still stand, but I should point out that I have been using formZ for a long time and for most of this time been very happy and historically my posts have been very positive.
Most of these are on the old forum going back to version 3.9 and possibly even 1.75 when I was still at art school and first encountered formZ and used it with Electric Image.

needs to not be a thing.  There might be some users who actually use this for their organization, but I think the vast majority of users have their own system.  For example, I store everything on a server.

Not to mention, programs that automatically create folders on hard drives are extremely bothersome.  It makes one ponder "what else is this program putting on my computer without my knowledge" which is an unsettling thought.
(no, I don't think formZ does this, but when computer privacy is no longer a automatic guarantee these days, new users might frown on this action).

A solution here would be to let the user decide where to put autosave and texture files.

I seriously want to only connect to V-Ray on the occasions I actually intend to use it. Now I have delays closing as well as opening FormZ. Sadly, I'm removing the V-Ray plugin until 'licensing' delays are resolved.

    Hi vva,

Thank you for that information, I didn't know this; however, if I am prepared to go to the effort of installing a second copy of FZ on my same computer, will this introduce confusion either to myself or the program with regard to where it/they look for preference files, libraries, most recent files etc?, and will this increase the occasions where I cannot use the program at all being locked out due to a 'too many computers' trigger, which has already been a problem due to working on 2 machines and at least 2 locations but never simultaneously? Although I appreciate the information, I think what you suggest could open a can of worms.

All Vray products (not just FormZ) require a license server, and every single professional I know uses the internet daily for their work in downloading files such as new assets, and sending files such as completed renderings.

That being said,  I too sometimes work when traveling on my laptop, away from a reliable internet connection, and cannot send or receive files until I get back on the internet.  I asked about offline rendering for Vray and there is a way to 'borrow' a license for 14 days offline for rendering without connecting to the license server.  If you go onto http://localhost:30304/#/borrow, you will see the steps involved to do this.
