It would be useful to have symmetry available  as an option in subdivision modelling

I do not see the overall arc of this thread as very constructive.  While I have not fully embraced 7+ due to some critical tools to my workflow not being pulled forward.
It should be realized that 7+ was and is an ambitious move from 6.x   there are many aspect of the latter that I have not come accustomed.  However, that does not mean that it is lesser of a product.
it has more to do with my lack of effort to transition.

most certainly, however, with such a major design change, there will be things that could be done better.  This is just a reality of any product.
While the complaints themselves may be valid, much is too vague.  Specific solutions need to be provided.  Even then, don't expect a specific solution you provided to be an exact match to what is developed.  There is a framework in witch the developer needs to work within.  There may be better solutions that they can provide which is seeded by your solution.  There may be a better fit to the majority of their users.

Which brings up the final point.  a developer will always need to balance their product that will give the best benefit to the majority of it's users.
As much as I would love for them to build everything to my needs, they simply cannot and will not.

well at least were in agreement!  Thank goodness for Wikipedia.  : )

Hopefully, FormZ will continue to improve as we continue our support and it grows with new users.  I sat with an associate of mine today that introduced me to the program back in the mid-ninties.  I remember how exciting it was to model with it back then and get quick beautiful results that I could take to clients.

with v8, I feel a bit of that excitement again. I hope it continues to grow with users so ADS can put more resources towards the UI.

I am not having an issue with pallets staying put.   Actually, They are a little too persistent.  It would be preferred to have them return to a chosen default.   However, If I move something just to get it out of the way for what ever reason, they stay put between sessions.  Without saving the pref file.

Agreed,  I too would like all pallets to be dock-able.   A single dock, is not enough.    Or at least, if they are pulled out of the dock, they should snap to each other as 6.x.

I do also find that Choosing tools was faster in 6.x  than 7+.     the popup tool palettes get in my way if all I want it to select the already displayed tool of that set.
in 6.x if I want more, I just hold the mouse button down for a fraction of a second for the popup then drag straight to the tool I want.  All nice and neat in a single row.

7+  it always pops up  and I have to hunt on multiple rows to find what I want.   Does slow the process.

Concession, these Items do need addressing

modZ-   Request to modify the Layers Palette so that the sub Layers in a Group are offset so that it is more visually distinguishable as a part of a Group.   Right now the indentation makes it difficult to read.

I.e.  see attached image.    in the Left most section, the Layer 6 appears to be on the same footing as does Layer 9.  even with the indicator bar to the left, it still doesn't read as part of a group.  Especially if that Group has many items... It all gets lost.

    Cheers!

modZ,   ah yea...  forgot where it was attributed.   Seems that this should be an application behavior rather than a project behavior.  No biggie though. Thanks!

Tech, I know how it works, but as Neurascenic said; it should be indicated as well. Because, if many materials more or less looks the same it will be a try and error to select the right material.

Indication should be marked with for example the red rectangle AND also text.

About text indication. It would be nice if the text indication show up always at the top side of the material palette when hoover over or when selected.

Are there users who want this option too:

Material name and marker around the material when selected in the Tool Option palette.
    See attachment.

OP: is there an interface you can reference that has the "look" you are hoping to find?

Personally I find the icons and general layout of the UI very pleasing and easy to use.  I personally like floating palettes as this makes for a great two monitor setup.  Maybe floating palettes is a Mac vs. PC thing?

It would be nice to iron out the Workspace issues that seem to happen with every release though.  I second that frustration.  In general I have not had too many complaints, but have found some bugs.

    Zweb,

Just noticed an odd difference of a controlled form, in 6.72  the shapes are smooth.
in 8.5 they are extremely faceted.

Is there  a way to alter the resolution?  I am not seeing it.  Thanks!

    Hi Chris,

Yes, there was an issue with certain display resolution settings that may not have been honored with formZ v6 that are now honored with the current versions.  To change the resolution, select whatever you want (or select all), go to the Attributes Tab of the Pick Tool Options, change the Basic Attributes to Display Resolution, and adjust it there.  As Rob notes, 50% Simple should be good for most cases.

    Does that help?

Just use the Interactive View Navigation (middle mouse button):

¢hris £und reacted to Leonard in 3 point alignment and C-Mesh
I work with a wide range of model types, sculpture, engineering, rockwork, architecture and every other type imaginable. All which have to be brought out into the physical world. This often requires that I hop back and forth between programs and import files. Having the control over meshes that the version 6, C-mesh command is missed.
Also there was a plug in at one time 3 Point alignment that no longer functions. That used to be a huge help when I needed to import models and get them in the right place.

    Thanks for listening,

¢hris £und reacted to Tech in How to Export my FZ file to FBX ?
    Hi R2,

Here are the currently available 3d file formats:

    And the 2d formats:

Therefore, if you need FBX, you will need to export a different format such as OBJ, Import that into another program, and export FBX from there.

We realize that FBX is a useful format, and we are investigating this for the future.
