    7.  Improved memory capacity for drawings with lots of imported images.  Addition of transparency for images.
    8.  Option to automatically import both a scaled vector Hidden Line drawing and an internally generated Full Shaded image, cropped and aligned with the Hidden Line in one step.  Ability to edit generated images in external image software and have the image update upon save, as is now possible in the Modeler with Texture Maps In Materials.
I'm including a simple sample sheet which shows how I typically set up drawings.  Here is a link to the V6 file:  https://we.tl/t-eNLZQwxCPQ

After several years of use it still catches me out regularly where I set a scene, go to it again, and loose it because it was recording while I changed it. To not save a scene until actually clicking a 'save scene' button would be far preferable.

+1 for Save a Scene and not Auto-Record.
Maybe better would be Save Scene and Auto-Record Scene as an option for those that want it.
I had had issues with this as well.  My solution has been to lock the Scene.  Of course I have to still remember to turn off the scene and re-lock it once finished, but it helps me remember.  Otherwise I forget to uncheck it and it records changes I do not want.
In reality the Auto-Record does not save any time.  At the end of recording one has to either turn off the red button or lock the Scene.  May as well just Save the Scene and have it operate the same way as Views do in my opinion.

I use the current behavior as a tool, to replace objects, I select them prior to the paste, to add objects, I deselect everything prior to the paste.  Works great.
If a new paste option is added, please insure that it does not conflict with the current implementation of standard key shortcuts.

We definitively need Hidden Line rendering as we export the result as 2D drawing into Autocad.
However, two main concerns about this:
    - Before FZ 7, we were able to export into Autocad at right scale, using the 2D drawing module (copy from 3D modeler and paste to 2D module and then export in DWG). It is nearly impossible now...
    - Hidden Line produce a lot of duplicate lines that we need to erase manualy in Autocad - a nightmare!
Can we expect some improvement in FZ 9?

My current professional situation has taken me away from modeling.  Though, I do a lot more programming.  In Python😊
Not professionally, but rather for internal projects.  Even though not using fZ professionally, I do use it for personal and internal business projects. I will first update my scripts from FSL to python. For the Mix of reasons of adoring fZ , the Community that supports it, and my continuing interest in programming, there are a number of scripts I have planned beyond my historicals and hope to continue with scripts as of yet unimagined.  I would even someday like to be a contributor to the LAB project. But even so, this would take some time to build the quality of my scripts as I don't pretend to be an expert.
jldaureil,  I realize that the above doesn't answer your question, as Tech did that already.   I would like to add, that some of the Utility Scripts currently work with version 8.  MIMI for example does (mostly.)    As Tech mentioned, when 9 is released that will break all FSL scripts.    If you or anyone else has a request of which scripts you want me to update to Python first, please let me know.  I would be happy and quite frankly excited to get on this project.  Updating my current scripts will be a good warm up exercise.
Though, due to my lack of professional use these days I don't know if I will be a candidate for Beta testing any longer. I do hope I will be, Hope isn't much of a strategy.  If I get the opportunity to test, I would be doing more testing in the scripting area than in the actual modeling environment, though naturally I will be doing some of that as well.

Tech, This is exciting news!   I want to beta test the scripting environment.  Do hope I haven't been too much of a PIA and will be allowed to test.  Don't know the emoji that describes my current expression.  <<Sweating Trepidation>>

¢hris £und reacted to Tech in Workaround for Layout? ...anybody use it this way?
    Malc,

Spending time making Layout a more robust and user-friendly drafting program will not "detriment [formZ] of its 3D modeling capabilities...."  We will allocate our resources effectively to make the whole formZ package (formZ, Layout, Imager, Viewer, etc.) a great value and enjoyable experience for all of its users.

Layout IS a way to to make your views created in the 3D model to another program to produce a working drawing.  This is done by following these steps:
    • Save your views with the .fmz file
    • Open Layout.
    • Create a Layout Frame
    • Select the .fmz file, choose your view and scale in the Frame Parameters, click OK.

Does this not work for you?

Also, note that exporting/printing both a raster image and a vector image at the same time is not easy to implement given that raster and vector formats are different.  That is, JPG is a raster format, DWG is a vector format.

If indeed the sole purpose is simply a line drawing for illustration purposes this is a great workaround. You can almost get away with the settings for removing backfacing polys in the draw as well with the all white constant faces. The reason for the HL drawings from formZ is the ability to produce scale working drawings that are dimension-able and can be used by framers, dry-wallers, and other tradesmen on paper for a construction site. Until drones and robots completely eliminate humans, we still need to produce such drawings for the complexity of buildings coordinating many systems built by many tradespeople.
We stopped using formZ 12 years ago for working drawings. We simply export HLs of what we need from the models and redraw the 2Ds in Vectorworks. The dedicated 2D power of Vectorworks' options from database compilation of various components such as plumbing and lighting fixtures to smart components such as wall tools, made these necessary steps in the production of the 60 page drawing sets we produce for construction of our houses and all their details.
Simple imagery is all you need to produce, kudos for not needing to utilize the HL function or needing to produce complex 2-d drawings for coordinating many who work on a construction project, including those using AutoCad and various other flavors of 2D CAD.

    Hello everyone

This section of the forums seems very quiet ...
    I am a little lost.

I had looked a little bit at the version 6 SDK.
At the time I had the idea to see if I could contribute.
For lack of basic basic training and also for lack of time I had to give up.

I feel that a lot has changed
    (python?)

Would there be someone Chris? or Z support that can make a very short history of SDK form Z?
Would it be possible to give me some pointers about the future? (in the perspective of contributing even if I am trained for this)

I have the impression that the project "LAB" is stopped
Do you know who made this contribution that seemed very dynamic and why it seems extinct?

The SDK has been available since v6 as both a C(/C++) interface and an FSL (form•Z script language) interface.
With v9 we are introducing Python support. This simplifies and standardizes the scriptable interface for form•Z making extending form•Z easier and opening an channel to a wealth of existing python libraries that offer a variety of functionality. The C interface will still be supported in v9, but we expect the to be used primarily for existing plugins or development that needs to access external C libraries. FSL will be discontinues.
We expect that the Python interface will bring new interest in extensions and to the LAB project which has not been updated in a while. We expect to start beta testing towards the end of next month so stay tuned!

¢hris £und reacted to Tech in select by criteria - suggestions, again
This is being improved in v9 but we also want to make sure everyone is aware of a subtle feature that was added in v8.6. When you right click on a material there is a new option at the bottom of the context menu to select all of the objects (and faces) that are assigned the material. An additional benefit of this is that if the material is not used, the menu item will be dimmed giving quick feedback if the material is in use or not. While this is not  replacement for the Elect By Criteria palette., it is a quick way to get to the common talk of finding the object that use a material.

    Joe,
    UV, oh hell yes!
Symmetry, absolutely needed.  Though, I use this in other apps, I do find it sometimes clunky to work with. (if something gets off, you don't necessarily realize it right away)

1, Good Idea!  Would significantly help out things like animation.  Instead of hunting through the whole list. If it isn't an automatic behavior, it should work with Isolate/Reveal as well.
    3.  Oh yea!  May be able to be done with a plugin or script.  But would probably work better if integrated directly in.
    4. Have been contemplating building this when scripting comes available again.  Though, it would probably be more of a workaround and again would be best integrated.
    5.  Hmm, never considered.
    6. Script could definitely handle this.  I did build a grid up/grid Down script for 6.x oh so many years ago.  Since some Utility scripts still work, it may give you a crude option.   I will go back and test it.

One would have to play.  Been a while, but last time I did any significant auto trace work, it was quite difficult to balance getting good corners vs smooth curves.  If I got the proper curves, then corners would always have to be manually cleaned up.    Where this was the most obvious, was on text.  Text being the technical part, may be comparable to what you would want on a CAD drawing.    That being said, Auto trace may have come a long way since then.

True.  I think a workaround for that is to change the image options to something high-res, export image to tiff, place this image in Illustrator, and run Image Trace.
Depending on the model and how much tinkering needs to be done, this would probably be faster than letting hidden line grind out a rendering for 10+ minutes.

(Tried posting this in the LAB topic to no avail)
The last SDK posted is quite old (8.5.x).  Can we please get a more recent updated version of the formZ SDK for 8.6.x, or a reason why not?
Also, why isn't the SDK automatically generated and released along with new revisions of the app?  It's kind of discouraging that the SDK isn't being kept current.
    Thanks!
