    Maxwell, system requirements

The FZ window automatically reflects the numerics that are specified in the image options palette. So, what I'm seeing in the FZ window is what is specified in the image options palette. So theoretically, Maxwell should pick up what is set in FZ image options and do it's thing. But it also looks like it's switching my view from 2 point to 3 point perspective. I need to know how to tell maxwell to render what is set up and not change it to it's own preferences... I think the way I worded that kinda makes sense. :-)

    Maxwell, system requirements

I should probably create a new thread since my post have veered away from "system requirements" to "where can I find the answer to...." I've been dabbling and trying to get up to speed and up and running enough to get something accomplished in Maxwell, and by all accounts it's going well. The resources you guys passed along are great. However... I'm having an issue with Maxwell decapitating my models. It's not properly matching the established view I have set in FZ and in some cases it is cropping off sections of the model that are clearly within view. Where do I find the information on how to set up Maxwell to properly render what is specified to be rendered? In short. I have a box that is completely visible within the view in FZ. but Maxwell over rides that view setting and picks it's own and crops the top out of the scene. I'm also noticing that maxwell isn't matching my established view. It kinda gets close but I need it to match the fz view exactly. Where might I find the setting to get this accomplished? see basic example attached.

Shdow casting: Thanks. Yea, It dawned me later this morning that I could turn off shadow casting and receiving per object attributes in FZ. It took me a little searching and inquiring to find where FZ moved the "set attributes tool" but they pointed me in the right direction. Resolution: That makes sense. I guess for some reason I was thinking Maxwell was rendering completely separate from FZ and it didn't occur to me that setting my image options as I do for render-zone also applied to Maxwell. That is easy enough. Thanks!

Where will I find the info on. 1. Turning the shadows off so it only renders the shade and not the shadow. 2. How to export the final render in a higher resolution than 72 dpi. When I open the file in PS it looks as though Maxwells default is 72 dpi. I need it to be at minimum 300dpi

Thanks Guys, Just these two replies have me moving forward. Thanks. I'll be looking into the links to see if I can get this plane off the runway sooner than later. Thanks

    Maxwell, system requirements

Down loaded and installed tonight. What a head ache they make that process! So far after 2 hours I've learned that Maxwell is not a "plug and play" kind of software as I have yet to get anything to work like the youtube videos show. There seems to be a whole lot of "what maxwell can do" info out there, but not as much "how to make it do it" info out there. However, I figure that surely this info is out there because users obviously know how to make their mawell work. Is there a user friendly outlet that truly walks FZ users through the set up and working process and how to make it go. Even the software's own videos are pretty vague in their descriptions. It took some hunting to figure out why Maxwell wouldn't render a simple box. Thanks to these forums, I discovered Maxwell only recognizes 2 of FZs light source options. Now I can't figure out fire. All the video clips I watch show it being an interactive window that adjusts with the work flow. Mine has been trying to render a white cube for 30 minutes now.. Not what I hope for with 32 gigs of RAM. Any leads on good resources to get this $600.00 experiment up and running?

Thanks Pylon. So to be clear. based on your "In Short" I've got clearance for take off on V4. My 2010 MacPro and radeon card will work if I buy V4, in Draft and CPU mode but not GPU mode. Yes?

    Maxwell, system requirements

Thanks Des. I'm just now jumping into the Maxwell arena. If I opt for V3 I'm assuming like most every software, once they have moved to the next version you probably can't get the earlier version any where. I do hope Pylon chimes in and walks me through my options here. In a perfect world I'm hoping my Radeon card will work fine and I can find V3 at a reduced rate some where and I'll be off and running.

Water rendering / bump maps / tutorials?

Excellent Andrew! Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!!
  11. I'm looking for some guidance on creating a nice rendered water. I'm figuring it's going to be bump map / reflectivity operation in renderzone but rather spend copious amounts of trial and error time. I was wondering if anyone knew of tutorials or how to's they can point me to. I'm looking to achieve a water rendered similar to that in the attached image. Any suggestions or help?
  12. To my understanding V6+ will not work beyond Mac OS system 10.9 correct? (if memory serves me right, in past posts some say it works and others say it doesn't) Though I am pretty much all up to speed and primarily using V8+ for 95% of my work flow, there are still those KEY tools and features I use that FZ has eliminated from the newer version (or made more difficult to use than in previous versions) that has me opening up V6 for every project. I was wondering if any users who are in the same boat have found a workflow friendly way of being able to move forward with system upgrades while being able to access older versions of software they rely on. (not necessarily FZ. but any older software). I don't want to have to boot up a completely separate computer to run one program.

V6 in an V8+ world? Insight request

Ok guys... I'm going to go ahead and upgrade the system. If it works for you... It should work for me. Thanks for the insight!

V6 in an V8+ world? Insight request

This is good news... but it feels iffy. Do ya'll have machines running v6 on 10.10? I'd feel better knowing the scenario is actually in use and not in theory. I've made my suggestions and frustrations known to tech support and in other forum discussions but haven't seen anything result from it.... yet. My fingers are still crossed. When I first started using FZ in 96 the instructor that I had teaching it to me always raved about how when ever he came across something or had a suggestion, FZ always added it in to the next version. I'm guessing the number of suggestions you get now are a bit more in volume and can't accommodate them as easily as you did in the early years. :-). I just have 3 core components of V6 that are holding me back from be able to move completely over to V8. 1. Extend Line tool in draft mode: (my biggy) Ya'll nixed the "relative" option. leaving only numeric and percentage, as options. Takes a lot more clicks and stifles the ability to be random. (Draft mode is kinda wonky too.. Can't really figure out why it operates like 3d space when it's supposed to be in draft mode (2d space) But... I confess, I have not spent much time trying to figure out draft mode in V8 since I'm long gone and back to V6 by that point. I figure if my dreams come true and the "Relative" extend line feature is brought back, I can just export my hidden lines as dwg's and bring them back in 2d. 2. Steam line tool: (the most perplexing change) Ya'll eliminated the stream line tool which I can't figure out why. A simple trace of a person underlay with a wacom tablet and the streamline tool turns in to a laborsom process trying to finagle the curve tools. Sometimes you just need to draw and not waste time! draw a person with the stream line tool in 2 minutes. curve tool = give up in 2 minutes and go to V6 :-) 3: Sweep tool: (the most frustrating) I know ya'll have heard it on this one from many users. If I have a sweep that needs to be done, I'm off to V6 to use the "user friendly" sweep tool. It never fails... every time I say "today is the day I'm going to conquer the V8+ sweep tool" I re-watch the tutorial, then spend 30 minutes trying to get it to sweep like I need it to, and 50% of the time it does and the other 50% I head to the dock and open up V6. Maybe there just needs to be a trouble shooting video done for it, that covers all the scenarios. It has good features, it's just temperamental and frustrating compared to the precision of V6. (Note: I do wish there was a zoom in option. in the preview window on V6 sweep tool....) 4: Components: (this is my bonus wish) The switch to components from symbols has been equally as frustrating as the sweep tool... It's hard to grasp. seems like every time I open a project I get a new confusing dialog box asking me something about my component library. Not understanding the tech talk I just click something to make it go away and then find my components aren't working or they are altered or the materials are no longer assigned. What does embedded mean? what does this new pop up dialog mean, what is this? what is that? if I click ok what will change? why are my pink cars stamping down green?.... Where as I'd like the old stuff added back in to the new software on 1-3.. I think this one just requires a more education... extensive or additional video tutorials on the working gears and what all the dialog boxes mean.

Anyone know off hand if Mac OS El Captain will run FZ V.6?

    System requirements

yep... fearing I'll be running two machines before it's all said and done. 1 for all the current software including FZ8+ and one dedicated only for V6+ at least until they add in the features from 6+ that they ousted in 8+. frustrating.

    3d Warehouse alternative?

Does anyone have any leads on a more reliable model "warehouse" site other than 3d ware house? The sketchup model geometry is so unreliable it's almost becoming a waste of time to visit the site in hopes of finding what you need. Seems like I have to down load 3 models before I can find one that works. I think the object doctor tool in FZ is supposed to fix these, but it never does. Even sites like form fonts has this problem. Is there such a library out there with well constructed models? Maybe FZ needs to add the project to their new years resolutions. FZ model library. Note: I'm not a programmer and don't know the ins and outs of the differences in FZ and Sketchup other than knowing Skp files are very iffy in FZ a lot of the time.

    My top 6. (for now)

    1. Reinstate the "relative" option for the extend line tool. I'm fervently trying to migrate completely to V8+ but this feature (among a few others) has me going back to 6.7. 2. It would be nice if there were a way to change a material parameter on multiple materials at once. example: You have 39 objects with different materials assigned them. you want all those materials to be chrome, or constant, or wood, right now you have to spend 20 minutes opening each material and adjusting the parameters. 3. Revert the draft and modeling sides back to the way earlier versions worked. example: A hidden line in model mode can be pasted into the draft mode and all the layers crossed over with it, allowing you to turn layers on and off. 4. Not a biggy... but still kinda inconvenient. Having to use the + icon to add a layer rather than just clicking on the line below an existing layer to add a new layer. 5. Give us a more user friendly sweep tool! 6. keep v6.7 alive and well for those of us who toggle back and forth. Both the old and the new versions seem to have strengths. If v6.7 ever goes away then you reduce the capabilities that are available.... or make sure all the features from early versions are included in the new. Maybe a new packaging and marketing re-release "Form-Z retro! the tools you loved and relied on as a kid" :-) keep up the good work.

One hour 45 minutes!!! monotonous tasks such as that feel like a waste of time but great opportunity for audio books.

Could really use #2 right about now. I'm about to embark on a lengthy exercise of material reassignment and reflection modification to constant. :-)

    My top 6. (for now)

    1. Nope thats not what I need. I need the flexibility to extend lines at random lengths on the fly. Setting a percentage or a distance extends the line to what ever numeric you have entered thus resulting in all the extenders being the same length. I want the flexibility back to extend lines quick, on the fly, at random lengths so it doesn't look like a software produced algorithm. SPEED! 3. Will look into this and play with it. thx 4. did it. Thumbs up! 5. Wish it was set up almost like it used to. I did get frustrated that you couldn't zoom in on the preview window in V6. 7. That's still a disaster. Just need to be able to draw free. Put the model on the Wacom and trace an underlay and move on to figuring out how to make the sweep tool work. :-)

!!!!! HOW COULD I LEAVE THIS ONE OFF??!!! #7 bring back the stream line tool! You know how long it takes to trace organic underlays with the other line tools?! Sometimes you just want to get a task done in 2 minutes not 28 minutes. Sometimes I just want to be able to draw and not draft!
