    Match View Background

Hopefully learning new tricks... Manual says: "From it select Flat Image, which brings in a default image and places it as a background. To import another image, click on the Options... button (next to the Backgroundmenu) and in the dialog that is invoked click Load.." fwiw, current RZ Pro here has no options button as noted above. There is a little folder icon (with an umbrella or lock?) that does give access to the "load" button. What I found when I imported my image, is that it adjusts the aspect ratio to the proportions of the formz window. I was hoping to see the image in the proportion in which the photo was taken. I see the original in the import thumbnail with gray borders top and bottom, but not in the full window. Consequently when I resize the formz window, the aspect ratio of the image changes. I'm importing a 3264 x 2448 image into a 5k iMac. Thanks, Donald

    Match View Background

"If lines that should be straight in the photo are curved, then it is too distorted to match view perfectly." Mastery is often a game of knowing the tolerances for imperfection. Not knowing them, I went with the speculation that since I was trying to fit the model into a narrow angle of the total angle of the scene, the curvature *might* be relatively flat and workable. Zoomed in it all looked rather straight. In fact, prior to solving, I saw red lines on the image which corresponded to the straight lines on the model----and they occurred on the lines in the image I expected them to. What I couldn't figure out, was how formz seemed to understand where it was supposed to put the model edges, and they looked straight, but when I solved the match, it didn't put the edges where it indicated it would. If those lines were actually curved, then in connecting them formz must have drawn them curved, since they matched the image in which the lines are thought to be curved. And yet, it didn't seem plausible that formz was drawing the lines curved. Finally, the mismatch in the solution was major, not subtle. As always I appreciate the help from the formz crew, you are such a great resource. I have since done matches on more normal photos and it works pretty much as advertised.

I am uploading the file to a drop box and will email the link to support. Sorry for file size---it's the image, not my model. Again, the formz file contains the model, but i've also made a simple solid, aligned on a separate layer, so that the control points on the matching model are few and separate. I put in 8 distinct points and can't get it to solve properly. When you see the horizon that may give a clue. Donald

Howdy, The background is a true image, but what I sent was a cropped version to keep file size low. The image was made with a drone and it has a fairly wide angle of view. Angle unknown. Yes I am clicking on the solve button. What I posted was the solution. The model definitely moved and adjusted. Problem is, that even giving it 5-6 points, major building corners do not move to where they are supposed to move. I'll compress the model and post it. Ok if I send a note to Paul H. with link? Thanks, Donald

Could you look at the attached? The bullets go to the right locations but you can see that the model does not map to where the targets are. You can look at the rubber band lines, the solid red lines showing collinearity, but the model points don't go there. I don't know how to get this to work.

    Match View Background

solve.tiffI am new to match view, so I appreciate the help and patience. I found that match the view in my situation was easier if I created a wireframe model of the actual model. The wireframe is just the most simplified geometry of the model containing the points I want to snap to. It is another layer of the model and registered to the model. As you can see in the image below, the bullets are correctly snapped to the related points in the model. The wireframe model is rendered in a semi-transparent yellow. You can see that while the control points go to the right place, the solution is "a kilter." I'm looking for an explanation and I wonder if it is because the photo was taken with a drone with an extremely wide angle lens, which gives curvature to the horizon. If that is so, I suppose it will not be possible to match the model to this photo.

Yes, thank you. Set custom size and maintain proportions in the Display Menu are key. Donald

    IES files

    Very nice. Thank you! Donald

    IES files

The manual notes that Z can work with IES files in the creation of accurate custom lights. I don't yet see how to do this. Does Z import the IES file and attach it to a custom light, or do I merely note and transfer the parameters? Thanks, Donald

    Imager

I've written a couple times to tech support but I'm not hearing anything back. I have a downloaded version of formz 8 which I upgraded to in January. This week I tried to use Imager for the first time. I got a message that it was damaged and I should throw it away. I could use this real soon. I'm trying to find out how to download a version that is not damaged. Thanks, Donald

    Imager

Thanks for the response. I'm not so worried about the particular file that I would want to trouble you examining it. I'm working around that. Glad to hear re progress bar that it is a known area to be improved. Most of the time I'm just running renderings in formz, one at a time. But clients have responded very well to the render zone imagery that is more realistic than I can do in real time with OpenGl. So in lieu of a realtime walkthrough, a series of images, printed on paper, can really engage them. d.

    Imager

I was able to put imager to work running a couple dozen images. I was not getting, however, what I'd call useful and necessary feedback as it worked away. Most of the images would render out on the mbp/10gig RAM/core I7, in 15-60 minutes. But the imager window simply went to gray. The only way I could tell where it was in the process was to look where it dropped completed files. The imager list window gave no feedback. One of the files about half way through may have had some object render zone (with final gather) could not get past. I did a render in formz and I found that it got about 96% through the scan line part of the process and got stuck. The same thing happened in imager, but there was no way to know if it was stuck, or just needed more time. I spent a lot of time waiting for something to complete that was not going to complete. My main concern, though, is not that image, it is the way imager worked. Donald

    Lost Object Snapping in File

Thank you! I don't know how that happened. Donald

    Lost Object Snapping in File

This is very frustrating. My file does not allow object snapping any more. I quit and relaunched, no change. I can start a new file and snaps work fine. Below is what I see in my file. I can have object snaps on, and draw an object off a corner, and it doesn't grab the corner and I don't see a red dot. From a distance it looks like I may have snapped, but zoom in and things are not aligned. What is happening? screen.tiff

    Lost Object Snapping in File

I maybe see a workaround. I'm using a wacom tablet. It seems that if I put the cursor on the vertex and just drag out the new object it won't grab the vertex. If I press and hold on the object for a moment before I drag out the object, it will make the connection. The behavior is still different from a new, fairly empty file. In the new file all I have to do is hover and I see the red dot. In my working file I only see the red dot after I click on the vertex, wait, and then draw out the object. When I begin to draw out the object I see the red dot. Donald

    Imager

Thanks folks, that worked fine and was painless. I have an imager related question: How would I set up a set of scenes for rendering with different layers on, and different lights on? Thanks, Donald

    Imager

I'm so sorry about the email. I discovered the problem this morning. Thanks for making the effort to email me. Are you saying that the way to get imager is to download all of formz 8 and install the whole thing? Or will I be able to install just imager? Many thanks, Donald

    Open: Add to Project

I'm working on a model that is part of a set of models that eventually need to combine into one. If there are three models, say Bldg. 1, Bldg. 2, and Site, In each file I put the layers that are going to be merged in a master layer group, say Bldg. 1, Bldg. 2, and Site. Also, each file may have some other layer groups within the master layer group. What I find happens is that the master layer group does not import, but all the layers import including groups which were within the master group. I was hoping the master group would come through and I'm probably doing something wrong. Donald

My Bad. It works. I merged after I had created the master group but before I had saved that file. Add to project looks at the saved, not the unsaved project. sigh, Donald

    Formz 6.7 to FormZ 8

Ok, I'll email the file. When open, it looks like the file in the desktop screen shot I attached. I let this sit a couple days because I found that sometimes I can scroll left. Just now opened the file and selected the vector line tool, to draw another object like the one already drawn. I tried it shaded and wire frame. I get close to the edge of the window and I can go no further. Thanks for all the help, it is much appreciated. DonaldUntitled.tiff

    Formz 6.7 to FormZ 8

Thanks for pointing out project settings. That is exactly what I was looking for. I should have known. I have a file where I have the scrolling issue. I've have a screen shot showing what the left edge of the window looks like. Again, I can get some jerky movement left, but up, down and right are zippy. I'm not sure how to link them so you can see and open them. Donald

    Formz 6.7 to FormZ 8

I can arrange for space along the left edge, but with the vector line tool I am not having any luck with auto scroll osx 10.10.1 (will check with .2), 8.02, mbp early 2011, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB (built in), 1680 x 1050 (default of display), 4 core I7. This isn't a huge problem, but I'd like to see it go away eventually. Unrelated, there is one other thing I'd like to be able to do: I'd like to be able to have different pre-selection and selection colors--like red and blue instead of red and pale red. Maybe I'll get used to it but initially I find it discernible but too subtle. thanks, Donald

    Formz 6.7 to FormZ 8

I need to add one more detail. Objects I've created (axon view) drag fast to the left. What scrolls slow, is when I'm creating an object with the vector line tool. The tool will scroll the screen quickly to top, right and bottom. It slows to a crawl to the left.
