Duncan303 got a reaction from graham_g in Problems Exporting DWG's
    Hi Tech,

Having a lot of issues exporting DWG files out of FormZ.

I've tried to export the attached file from FormZ 8.5 with no success and have also tried from version 8. tried back saving through different versions of DWG, 2000, 2004, 2010 etc etc to no avail.

Have exported much larger and more complicated parts of this job, some of which were modelled outside of Form Z reasonably successfully, it took me several tries with each file, getting various levels of success until finally got a full export. same file exported used same settings produces different results??

This alloy truss model attached was modelled entirely in FormZ and it would seem like a an easy export as fundamentally it's just a bunch of extruded rectangles.

I have attached the resulting dwg.

File sharing like this is an essential part of our work and I feel like this used to be easily achieved using version 6 but has also been a problem through updates 7 & 8.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong here?

Been meaning to reply one last time to this thread but couldn't sign in to forum for a number of weeks.
Thanks again for the help. Have exported several models since posting this and found the naming of layers seemed to be the biggest issue. No longer using any spaces in layer names and files export fine.

    thanks again

The export of your file as dwg failed for me.  I was able to export after I edited the Name of the Layer " B Frame Front".  There is a character at the beginning of the name which appears as a space but is likely an invalid character.  The dwg export is picky about characters.  It would be nice if the FZ dwg exporter would check for bad characters and substitute a valid character and supply a warning.  I believe it is currently on ADS's developers to do list.

Once I was able to export the file, I imported it into another program where I received a warning for bad objects.  I rebuilt the bad objects in FZ simply by selecting a face on the bad object and extruding it.  After placing the original objects on their own layer and ghosting it, the file exports and imports cleanly.

I do a huge amount of file sharing, and for this, FZ is really great.  There are very, very rarely any issues with bad geometry created in FZ.  Most of the issues I have in exporting are due to objects originally created in a different modeler and imported into FZ.  While they appear fine in FZ, upon export they reveal their hidden problems.  Because of this I always export the file (as dwg, or more often as stp) and then import it into and save out in the format of the software which my vendors use.  In this way I can be sure that what I am sending out will be clean on their end when they open the file.

On a side note, when I exported the file as .stp (my go to format for exports) the file imported cleanly without any errors.

    hi,

Maybe i'm missing something straight forward here but i can't see any way of changing the 'selected hatch' when setting attributes in the Cross Section dialogue box. I can change the scale, angle and alternate between world and screen but i want to be able to add different hatches to choose from so in my sections or Layout drawings I have different hatches showing.

Have searched through the manual to no avail.

Anyone know how to do this?

    Hi,

Looking for some advice on best apps to create 3d pdfs, preferably free.

Also is this something we could hope to see in version 9 of Form Z where it could be an export option? as I know it's something you can do directly from Solidworks with a plugin.

    Hi,

As a daily user of the layout mode in FormZ 8 I thought i'd list a few things I've noticed recently that might be issues just for new or potentially for all users.

    • Multi Dimension Tool - some of these disappear when you create a pdf, I've given up on using it and just use single Dimension tool.

    • Leader Lines - I annotate a lot of my layout work with these and find it causes the application to crash a lot, enough times for it to be a real hinderance to getting work completed in time. I've talked to Tech about this before and have looked at fixing faults with fonts on my computer etc, but it still happens. The strange thing i've found is it doesn't tend to happen if the layout file is the only file i have open at the time, if i have multiple files open that is when the problem occurs.

Also when i output a pdf i find the text I have inputted into the dialogue box of the leader line has shifted down in the relation to the end of the leader line - this is a consistent fault and has happened since i began using layout.

    • PDF Output - Thankfully the latest update has fixed many of the issues here, great stuff. The print line widths being corrected is a huge help. Also the addition of all the hidden line attributes to the options in layout is awesome, showing hidden edges is a great addition. My only gripe is that when outputting pdf's which i then take into illustrator to add title blocks is that any curves in my drawing (and sometimes straight lines too) become just a whole lot of points rather than a boolean curve. It seems FormZ already has a good interface with illustrator, being able to import/export illustrator files etc, it'd be great if the pdf's from layout had the same quality. Worth noting i've tried exporting illustrator field direct from layout and i get the same result.

Title Block Function - This was talked about being part of FormZ 8 but has still not materialised as yet??

    • Also wonder if it'd be a good addition to the dimensioning tool palette to have a 'section' tool where you could annotate where you have a section. Would then be easy to show said section in another pane using a clipping plane or the actual section tool.

Interested to see not only what Tech thinks on this but any of the other FormZ users out there who use Layout regularly. I post a bit on Layout and sometimes feel as though not many other people are using it. Maybe I'm wrong and other people just aren't finding fault with it.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Just highlighting a couple of glitches that I have come across on numerous occasions in Layout mode.

    • Note Text - text moves when you save as pdf. it generally shuffles up the page. i think this mostly happens if you type in a note with multiple lines of text. see attached screenshots of layout version then pdf version to see the movement in text.

    • Dimensions Units and Display - file toggles between "use project" and "custom" when you make any changes in source file or if you set to "use project" before saving the file, it then jumps to "custom" on saving

You can easily render a pano with a number of quadratic images rotated at 90 degrees to each other. There are a number of tools available to take these source images and output panoramas. Equirectangular images like the one Maxwell produces is just one. Keep the concepts of stitching or otherwise converting still imgages with tools like PTGUI apart from panoramic tour creation tools that can output flash or HTML5 format files to be viewed in a webbrowser VR headset or otherwise. I use Garden Gnome Pano2VR to create web based content. For VR there is a viewer called IRIS and another viewer built for Oculus Rift that can take equirectangular images for instance.

Have you tried the cubic render option on render zone?

Go to 'display' menu > 'render cubic panorama'.

You can than view this with the bit of code in a web browser. You need something like 'tour weaver' or 'pano2VR' to add hotspots etc. and get the most out of it.

Have tried this and got good results after a bit of internet research.

I can get Leader Lines to display annotation or length of a line or area of a face, but:

is it possible for Leader Lines to display part name (automatically without typing it in)? Maybe this is possible in Layout but I am hoping it is possible directly in a FormZ Pro 8.5 model?

But for some reason, undos will just stop working after a while and I have to quit and relaunch FormZ to get it working again. Very annoying. Any idea why this happens and how I can fix it so I don't have to keep restarting FormZ?
