  1. Been meaning to reply one last time to this thread but couldn't sign in to forum for a number of weeks.

Thanks again for the help. Have exported several models since posting this and found the naming of layers seemed to be the biggest issue. No longer using any spaces in layer names and files export fine.

    thanks again

  2. Thank you so much for looking into the issues with that file.

I did wonder if it might have something to do with naming of the layers, we've been having some issues with file names and google drive recently as well.

Also thanks for the advice, will check through layer names etc before exporting in the future if we have any further issues. I think after exporting several different parts of the rest of this build and then getting stuck with this I'd lost a bit of patience.

    thanks again.

  3. Hi Tech,

Having a lot of issues exporting DWG files out of FormZ.

I've tried to export the attached file from FormZ 8.5 with no success and have also tried from version 8. tried back saving through different versions of DWG, 2000, 2004, 2010 etc etc to no avail.

Have exported much larger and more complicated parts of this job, some of which were modelled outside of Form Z reasonably successfully, it took me several tries with each file, getting various levels of success until finally got a full export. same file exported used same settings produces different results??

This alloy truss model attached was modelled entirely in FormZ and it would seem like a an easy export as fundamentally it's just a bunch of extruded rectangles.

I have attached the resulting dwg.

File sharing like this is an essential part of our work and I feel like this used to be easily achieved using version 6 but has also been a problem through updates 7 & 8.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong here?

  4. hi,

Maybe i'm missing something straight forward here but i can't see any way of changing the 'selected hatch' when setting attributes in the Cross Section dialogue box. I can change the scale, angle and alternate between world and screen but i want to be able to add different hatches to choose from so in my sections or Layout drawings I have different hatches showing.

Have searched through the manual to no avail.

Anyone know how to do this?

  5. Hi,

Looking for some advice on best apps to create 3d pdfs, preferably free.

Also is this something we could hope to see in version 9 of Form Z where it could be an export option? as I know it's something you can do directly from Solidworks with a plugin.

  6. Interesting way of working.

I use layout all the time and have come to expect the frustrations that go along with it while hoping that it'll be updated and upgraded in the future. I try to post about issues i have and improvements that could be made on a semi regular basis.

The way of working you describe almost sounds a bit like the workflow from version 6, hidden line renders dimensioned and annotated.

I'd be interested to explore this if it was quicker than using layout - how do you do multiple elevations on a single page and how do you set up a scale. Do you ever add axonmetric or perspective views?

At present I take layout created PDF into illustrator to tidy up and add further detail, title block etc.

  7. Hi,

Just highlighting a couple of glitches that I have come across on numerous occasions in Layout mode.

    • Note Text - text moves when you save as pdf. it generally shuffles up the page. i think this mostly happens if you type in a note with multiple lines of text. see attached screenshots of layout version then pdf version to see the movement in text.

    • Dimensions Units and Display - file toggles between "use project" and "custom" when you make any changes in source file or if you set to "use project" before saving the file, it then jumps to "custom" on saving

  8. Hi,

I recently saw a render by a company on their facebook page that was an interactive 360º view. You clicked and dragged mouse to rotate yourself around a central point allowing you to look at all the points of the interior of a room. Very similar to if you take a panoramic picture on iphone and post to facebook.

I downloaded the render and what i got was a flat image that was obviously a kind of panormaic view but that also allowed you to look up and down.

Is there a way in Form Z of setting a central point in a space and having it create a render like that. I have attached the image for reference.

Has anyone done anything like this before?

  9. I have noticed similar lag when using perspective view in Layout with certain more complex models. Mostly complex truss models with a lot of detail, can be relatively quick in elevation but very very slow in perspective.

I have noticed a slight increase in performance if i change object type to 'Poly Lines' as opposed to 'Lines, Splines & Arcs'.

  10. Hi,

I have noticed a bug within the dimensions in Layout.

When setting up dimensions, changing, text size, terminator etc, I will always set the "Units and Display" option to "use project'" as I'd like my layout file to have the same units as my modelling file. This is all fine until I either make a change in the linked modelling file or when i reopen a saved layout file. The 'units and display' always switches to 'custom' and i need to open dimensions palette again to change back to 'use project'.

This is not confined to any particular file and happens with all layout files I have been using in 8.5.

    thanks

    Duncan

  11. Think i have mentioned this on forum in the past - is there any chance of bringing back the radial dimensioning tool as per FormZ version 6 where you selected the arc and offset the dimension from that. The current leader line dimension just isn't up to standard - it often doesn't let you select the curve you are trying to dimension and it only gives you the radius where almost always when fabricating anything you need to supply the distance along the curve as well.

Would be great to see it back in action in future updates - I am referring to using it in layout by the way.

    thanks

  12. I was really wanting to apply 2 textures to the same face and be able to see it (preview it) in shaded or shaded full. I'll either use the decal tool or method described by DennisA or I may just create new texture in Photoshop that has the background and transparent graphic image combined and then apply that.

    thanks for the tips.

  13. Is it possible to use multiple texture maps on one object in shaded or shaded full?

I know this is possible to do with the decal tool but then i only see it in Renderzone.

Trying to overlay a graphic with transparency map over a wood texture on a cylindrical object.

I thought i'd seen something about this in one of the tutorials or webinars.

thanks in advance for any help.

  14. Hi,

    Thanks for the responses.

Yeah quitting FormZ and reopening seems to do the trick.

Also it's happened a couple of times during this project and not sure what action suddenly made them change. It's just all of a sudden the components all rotate and become unresponsive to changing the align with view in parameters.

I've tried relinking the texture maps but it just keeps making the file crash. Whats the best way to share file with you Tech??

    thanks.

  15. I'd set up a project with a lot of trees (using components) as a landscape background for a structure and had set several views and everything was working fine as I'd set my components to align with view.

I did a set of renders of the views and then had to make some changes to elements of the model. All of a sudden the components are no longer aligned to view and have all rotated around their ctr points to an arbitrary angle. Also in shaded and shaded full they are no longer showing their image map but are just solid colours. They render fine in relation to their image map but not their alignment.

Is this a known issue with components - i rarely use them to be honest and the times i have in the past they have worked fine.

    Any suggestions??

  16. Hi All,

Thankfully this is not really an issue anymore - persuaded our new designer to move away from SketchUp to FormZ so converting my files is no longer an issue. After a few attempts I realised that I don't fundamentally like the modelling functionality of SketchUp - the geometry just isn't up to the level of FormZ or other Cad applications. I know it works for a huge number of people but it's not for me or our business.

Agree with above comment - I always run object doctor when I've imported something from 3D Warehouse.

    thanks

  17. Having a look finally at 8.5 Beta and was excited to see the addition of the Title Block feature.

I've opened Layout and added a standard title block, been into project settings and via that into Dictionary section of Title Block to edit some of the text. Seems i can edit some text but not others. Obviously every individual or company needs there own title block so winder if this is something anyone else has been looking at yet.

I'd also like to create my own title block for my company as we already have one set up in Illustrator. Current workflow for me is to export a PDF of Layout file and add that to a Illustrator template with my title block on this which is fundamentally a step too far.

How do i create and save a custom Title Block which will open every time I open my formZ Layout?

Any tricks and tips very appreciated.

    thanks

    Duncan

  18. Thanks for the tips - I'll let you know how I get on with some of the methods described. Wish there was and .skp export option! Actually import quiet a bit of stuff from the 3d Warehouse and although some of it hasn't the greatest geometry it's good for using within visual and concept design.

  19. Hi,

Looking to see if anyone has any tips on exporting files from Form Z to SketchUp.

I quiet often get asked by clients to provide 3d work to add to a larger models based in SketchUp.

My go to whenever exporting/importing between different CAD platforms is DWG but I've had a few comments regards some of the models I've sent people in the past - generally to do with surface objects.

I'm not familiar with SketchUp although i have dabbled a little bit in the past.

Looking for some recommendations regards file types, whether models should be smooth or facetted, scaling issues, surfaces objects and any other thoughts from the forum.

    Thanks in advance

    Duncan
