Bo Atkinson got a reaction from andrew in Is FormZ working on M1 Macs?
My own Windows10 transition is definitely not for my main work, as W10 is bothersome to navigate, for example word dictionaries are scant in W10 . My main use is rather to explore very specific new tools in Rhino7, (as their Mac side is less supported in the plugins and in the Youtube training of very specific work tasks).  Rhino's Youtube support vids are amazingly extensive, covering many instant-solutions, as done by users at no cost to viewers. Specialized tool solutions are demoed quickly, which I prefer to the long showcase videos or long courses-A-Z. Keyword searches make this fast.
The basic geometry stuff is the same and Rhino gives me more depth to explore, as for example the deform tools for complex objects are much faster and easier than formZ, (RE Bend and Taper).
My 2012MacPro  is about equally fast for my W10 installation of formZ. Common shortcut-hand-patterns for formZ and for Rhino, in both Mac and in W10 might be possible, by "re-mapping" the Alt- and Command- keys,  when adjusting sct files in W10, and I don't plan on using other W10 apps with many shortcuts.
I expect the new MacPros might eventually become affordable, but the old ones are good enough for me on OSX 10.13.6. Chances are future upgrades of everything will be subscription only, so older will be better for me working offline.

I recently chose a Windows10 upgrade path after 25 years on Mac...
Problem is Win10 doesn't have a way to read data on most Mac formatted SSD drives, *as mine are internally connected (to asus proart z490 motherboard). The USB thumb drives, formatted by Mac do read... I don't want to specially reformat old Mac drives and like them just a as they are.
Disk Management reveals an SSD and properties, but offers no access button, (and worse yet seems to reveal repeated instances of drive(s)??
The www offers some apps to read any old Mac formatted drive...
1] Does anyone use such apps and which work the most easily?
2]  Does anyone know if  there is highly reliable app to use with  Icy Docks? (as I've wasted days trying to get files, which is so easy in Macs).
    * I have an "Icy Dock 4 X 2.5 SATA Hot Swap" (front loaded), and I'm not sure if it really and truly hot swaps, but no matter, as it is easy enough to load and unload after shut down. https://www.icydock.com/knowledge.php?id=69.

Energy Wave Theory, or rather it's focus on better alternative hypotheses, in the history of particle physics, has always attracted my interests, so that finding a competition to "to simulate a micro-sized universe" seemed to ignite part of my formZ modeling efforts these past six weeks. http://harmoniouspalette.com/TrihedralHelixForEWT.html
I have sent this into their open-source competition judges... Their extensive web presence spans widely from here: https://energywavetheory.com/introduction/

I save time by just opening a new project window and immediately closing just that window,  (instead of restarting or rebooting, as this happens often).

For countless issues with many kinds of tools, when things get suspicious, I either reset workspace to restore session, or restart formZ, and if still wrong, reboot OS. Loosing custom shortcuts and prefs are usual, also loosing generalized project responses, most of which easily fix by starting new project and closing it immediately, which restores current project immediately after that trick. As for loss of the good old ways changing, yes, I have to accept that too, but the new powers are well worth it.
I looked at other 3d apps and downloaded Blender, and am just amazed how they lack some of my particular favorite things. So I don't object to random formZ problems, by persisting until things work out, and new methods pop up, and then I need the outdoor work for exercise, and let the processor chips cool down.   ^__^

Long ago the Independent Scale tool had an option to "scale the space between objects", such that assemblies like this bike could have axel parts moved along an axis vector line.  I think this was dropped possibly before year 2000... Can Such functionality be brought back to FormZ again?  In the case of the the U-Scale tool, objects should be distanced apart from the center snapped point, which  actually has a useful architectural advantage , to show clients the optional object spacing in room design phases.

Here is an idea for an economical thin shell, inflatable form work (for sprayed thin shell cements), using one sheet, (just as it comes from the factory without job site modifications), to build those NURBS surfaces you are dreaming about.  Otherwise, it is a good starting point for designing a rigid framework for tensioning translucent skins. (I'm interested enough now to model such structures based on what I learned with this new model). Today's considerable green house plastics are gradually improving and the sizes cover needed spans, which are easily erected and easily replaced after (the current) lifespan of 7 years, which also depends on location and budgeting, (the point being that costs are more reasonable for such skins as compared with high end projects).

More details and pics are here: http://harmoniouspalette.com/MonolithicSheetDomeStudy.html
In case examples of my building experience are of interest, here are structures I have built (albeit on shoestrings, so naturally there is no polish).

Bo Atkinson reacted to Des in + Light
    Hi Bo/John,
There are different kinds of lights in Maxwell as per other packages. For outdoor sun/ambient lights there are Sky Dome, Physical Sky, IBL. You just need to tell FormZ in the Light parameters dialog which type the light is in the Type drop down menu.
Other light types such as spots/cones created in your scene in Fz can be automatically converted by switching on "Export Point and Cone Lights" in the Maxwell Display Options under the Translation tab. But I like to create geometry for those and using an emitter material editable in Maxwell MXED. There you will find light types "Area, IES & Spot" where you can play with the settings. You need to go through the maxwell manual setup for this but it's fairly quick to set up and there's fantastic control using Maxwell Fire or MultiLight.
I've attached a scene setup (simple interior screen for products or furniture). You only have to drop in you model, say a table for example.
When creating the geometry (a simple square surface), make sure the normals are pointing in the direction you want it to shine. The size of the emitters affects the shadow softness.

    Just to add to my last post;
Keep all you settings for the camera and emitters to real world settings. For example in interiors, a typical camera setting would be say fstop 2.8, ISO 400 and exteriors fstop 10, ISO 100.
By switching on the MultiLight option, you can have fun altering the individual lights on the fly after the render is complete so I typically supply at least a day time and night shot from the same render.
If your render is too dark for interiors then add more lights or ramp them up or change the camera settings.
I forgot to mention that there are also an Ambient field, and soft box light etc. as well to help with providing more light in an interior space.
Basically the more lights the less noise. So I generally add "window emitters" to my openings pointing inwards on a layer. They are great to speed things up and add another element of control for interior renders.

    form•Z v9.0.3 (#A123) highlights
    New stuff
“Superimpose” is a new option in the Underlay options of the Reference Plane Parameters palette. When selected, the underlay is Superimposed in shaded views instead of depth sorted. This is most useful when combined with the transparency slider to see the undelay image through a shaded image.
“Give Guide Snaps Priority” is a new option in the snap options Palette. When selected, Guide Snaps are given priority over object snaps (when both are enabled). If the cursor is close to both a guide and a snappable point/edge/face, the location will be snapped to the guide rather than the point/edge/face. When this option is disabled, the opposite rule is applied. This option is now on by default by popular request as it makes the guides more functional in shaded rendering modes. The option can be controlled with a key shortcut as well (Key Shortcuts manager).
    General improvements
Export of hidden line images to pixel based formats (TIFF/PNG/JPG etc.) now works properly.
Underlay images no longer disappear when switching from wireframe to shaded full and the back to wireframe on machines with certain graphics cards.
Components with Flat/Cubic/Spherical texture map controls now render properly in RenderZone.
Using Reduce Mesh tool no longer crashes on certain objects.
Files with mirrored components now show the components properly when saving and re-opening the file.
Curve and Surface Formula tools now show all the formulas in the Interface.
View navigation in the Decals and Classic Texture Map dialog now works properly.
The “Pick By” and “Assign” options in the Classic Texture Map dialog now work properly.
Door/Window component’s are now are placed at the proper depth.
The Section tool now properly honors the Status of objects (Ghost or Delete).
    Windows specific
The Transform tool no longer crashes when entering a second value for the Scale option.
    Draft/Layout
Printing or exporting to PDF no longer misses some elements.
Printing or exporting to PDF now includes title blocks properly.
Printing from draft space now works as expected.
Image elements no longer have a border when printed or exported to pdf.
The Layout content tools no longer become randomly dimmed.
Layout frames now update properly when the model is changed.

FZ has changed so much since V6.  Rebuilding will give you an opportunity to rethink which shortcuts are still necessary and which keys should be replaced with one of the many, many new tools and commands.  It's still an ongoing process for me tweaking my shortcuts for efficiency.
As a side note setting key shortcuts for the Snaps has a hidden (I believe) feature.  If you set regular keys for the snaps they become cumulative, while if you set CMD+key they become exclusive.  E.G.  If you have a snap selected like Center of Face and you trigger a regular key shortcut assigned to Point, you will then have both Center of Face and Point snapping selected.  If you have Center of Face selected and you trigger a CMD=key for the Point Snap Shortcut, FZ will turn off all selected snaps and only utilize Point snapping.  Because of this my key shortcuts for snaps are: F1 for Point, CMD+F1 for point exclusive etc, etc.
And Chris, here is a model I am working on for a Halloween Display, will be 3/8"=1'-0" - about 18" tall.  Gatorboard core, wood siding, grown detail parts.  I ordered an LCD Resin printer yesterday to augment my FDM printers.  Sculpting a scary tree to grow next.

Excellent work rmulley.  Hard to make any suggestions.  It is probably client driven but I would have snuck in a little more glossiness on the packaging if they allowed.  That along with an hdri light tends to add a lot of life to objects.
Here is one I have been playing around with.  It is actually an older project that was originally done in Maxwell.  I wanted to try V-ray on it to see how they compared.  No real difference other than the fact that V-ray was 100 times faster.  The lights were a little harder to set up in V-ray because Maxwell has the multilight function which is one of its greatest strengths.  If only we had that on all render engines!

I do love Vray I have to say.... Renderzone is just a sad distant memory now
I'm still trying to nail down a good go-to technique for a white background, I am getting there but I can't show those right now.
