Tech reacted to ¢hris £und in Match 0.2 alpha Python Script WIP
    Hello all,
My first attempt at a fZ/python script.  (this is an Alpha and has known issues.  ToDo List at the bottom of this message.)  File attached.
    What is Match?
Match will scale objects to match the Boundary Length (not yet functional), Area, or Volume.  Not the bounding dimensions. Either Source/Master objects or a direct value in the UI can be used to determine the Target object sizes.  Scaling is also allowed. Such as 1.5 x  or .3333 of the Master.
Match, is shape/form agnostic.  That is, it doesn't care what the Target, nor Master shapes are, it will work as long as they have the topology you are trying to Match.   i.e.  a open poly line does not have a volume, so the script will not work if attempted. (currently, if an error is raised, nothing happens, including no indication of the error)
A surface objects area could be matched to the surface of a Solid, if you have a reason to do that, and visa versa.  Likewise a surface objects length can be matched to a open or closed line form and visa versa.

Hope this is useful for someone besides myself.

    ---------------------------
To use:  (if the .pyc file doesn't work on a PC, let me know, I will provide the source if need be)
Manually Install the script in the scripts folder (as far as I can tell, this cannot be in a sub-folder)
Abstract case:  Select the objects.   Currently, Last object created will act as the Master/Source.  All other objects selected will act as Targets. (This will be fixed in the future)    So, cut and paste the object you want to be the master, so that fZ regards it as the last object in the modeling buffer.  This will be fixed in the future.
Here are three arbitrary objects all with differing Volumes.  The Pyramidal shape will be the Master, as it is the last object created.

    Master.                                                              Target                                                                 Target

    1. Select the objects you want to transform as well as the Master.
    2. Chose, Extension/Run Utility, Navigate to the Match.pyc script.
    the following dialog should appear.

    Select your options,
In, this case, I am going to match the Volume Topology of the Pyramidal shape, with no scaling.
Click the OK button, Now the objects all have the same Volumes.

Note 1: the surface areas are all different, while the Volumes all "Match"

TODO List.  (I will need the API Documentation to finish)
    • Change UI to make sense.    The order of the UI is a little awkward right now.
    • User configurable Units (currently only Imperial Units work and in Feet Only)  (really only matters when inputing size manually into the UI.  If matching to an existing volume, works as expected)
    • Use Pick Order (currently, the last object created is the Master that all other objects picked gets matched to)  (Allow User to have first picked or Last Picked to be the Master by UI Choice)
    • Minor issue with the Volume, does not always make a perfect match.  is sometimes off by a few thousands. (I do know how to fix it... just need to jump on it)
    • Undo doesn't work, Not sure if that is my problem or something
    • Clean up and Document Code

The script was built from what I could glean from the examples provided by ADS.  Realistically, this is a simple project, however it does hint at the power of what can be done.
    The future is bright!

Next, I will show some examples of Why you would want to use it.

Tech got a reaction from andrew in form•Z v9.0.1 now available
V 9.0.1 is the latest version (it is newer than v9.0.0.3).  This version can be installed from the link you received with your v9 codes (ie this page  always has the latest installers).
The update item in the menus will notify you when there are new versions and direct you to the download page. We can no longer update the software with the patching system that we have used in past as changes to application security on both Mac OS and Windows have made this method obsolete.
  3. Thanks

    form•Z v9.0.1 (#A107)
We have posted v9.0.1 today to address some reported issues with formZ v9. This version can be now installed using the link you received with your v9 codes. Here is a list of some of the more important improvements:

    • When the favorites menu is invoked (Space bar by default), pressing the space bar again will open and position the tool options palette on the screen at the location of the favorites tools. This makes for an easy way to access the Tool Options without needing to navigate to the location of the palette. The palette is returned to its original state when the mouse moves out of the newly positioned tool options palette or the favorites menu shortcut is selected again.
    • Pop-up Tool Options is a new key shortcut available in the Palettes group of the Key shortcuts manager. This invokes the tool options at the mouse location as with the favorites menu without needing to go through the favorites menu first. There is no default key combination assigned for this option.
    • The color popup in the Attributes tab of the Inspector now works properly when clicking on the arrow indicator.
    • Export PSD no longer generates empty files under certain situations.
    • The palette dock is now maintained in the Cone Of Vision environment.
    • Shaded work and shaded full now show the proper color when Copy and paste of objects which have materials with matching names.
    • Certain geometry no longer causes a crash when using object snaps and the mouse rolls over the object.
    • Create Reference File no longer includes references to other attached reference files in the newly created reference file.
    • Create Reference File now warns when replacing a reference file that is already being referenced by the project.
    • Create Reference File now handles single object reference files properly.
    • Docking and undocking certain palettes now works properly.
    • Editing Components in the project window has been improved.
    • The parameters tab of the inspector now works properly with components.
    • Components placed with the “Place on Active Layer” option now explode properly.
    • The “Getting Started” tutorials are now accessible from the startup screen again.
    • Holding Command/Ctrl and dragging docked palette will allow precision
placement/force placement

    OS X specific
    • Installer now works better on OS X 10.15.3
    • Animations played in the form•Z window now display properly.
    • Closing the Inspector palette, no longer leads to crashes.
    • Changing the direction of the Arc 3 again works with tapping command key.
    Windows specific
    • Hide palettes no longer leads to extra margins shown around the palettes when un-hiding.

    Draft Layout
    • Title blocks now work as expected.
    • The place image tool now works as expected.
    • Components update properly when a layout file is opened.
    • Paste from Model/Paste from Draft have been improved.
    • Compounds from v6 files are now converted properly.
    Additional stability and performance improvements.

Tech got a reaction from ZTEK in Why isn't formz more popular?
Paul was a valuable member of our team as our tech support lead for many years and we miss him professionally and personally. Paul was enthusiastic and always someone who would be the champion of the end user to our team. However, he was never a developer of form•Z. False rumors like the lead programmer is dead simply do not help our situation. form•Z was created by Chis Yessios and David Kropp. Chris has retired but is still a valued advisor. David continues as president and leads the development team (not the rumored sole developer).
The Joint Study Program still exists and between this program, the form•Z student edition and form•Z free there is a solid install base in schools (but it could always be better). We stopped the Partnerships in learning publication as it became increasingly difficult publish, as a younger generation of faculty became less interested in providing the student feedback that made the publication interesting. In general schools no longer teach software leaving the student to pick their own solution often without much guidance. We give the software to students and faculty for free (in Switzerland as well), yet others charge (some significantly).
We are not sure where these market share numbers come from, but form•Z is used at a lot more than 930 companies, this number is at least an order of magnitude off.
Are we a small team at the moment? Yes. But we challenge you to find another group that is as dedicated and believe in what they do. Do we make mistakes, sure, but we will always try to address the issues as fast as possible. Are we great are marketing? No. Andrew has provided some stunning images and kindly allowed us to use them in promotional material. We need to get better at marketing and ideas are always welcome.
Thank you for everyone’s feedback, it will only make us better and we believe that the best is yet to come.

Tech got a reaction from palarsen in Continued FormZ & Maxwell development for V9
We would all like to see Maxwell for form•Z continue.  As mentioned above we are in touch with Next Limit and discussing either us or a 3rd party picking up support for the plugin for future versions of Maxwell and formZ.
We continue to encourage everyone to let Next Limit know how important this is to you!

Tech got a reaction from andrew in Catalina (MacOS 10.15) compatibility
form•Z 8.5 and later (ie 8.5.x, 8.6.x and v9 beta) will work with Catalina (a.k.a. MacOS 10.15). Catalina only supports 64-bit apps so older versions of form•Z prior to v8.5 and all bonzai3d versions will not work. Unfortunately this is beyond our control as these are 32-bit applications which Mac OS no longer supports. We also can not rule out the possibility of compatibility issues with specific features or plugins in formZ v8.x on Catalina.
Note that if you try to update a system to Catalina and you have a version of form•Z 8.0 or earlier on your system you will get a warning before the update installs that form•Z is not compatible with Catalina, even if you all have a newer compatible form•Z (v8.5 or later) installed as well.
