    Hi Gentlemen,

Sorry for the delay in responding here.  Yes, these things are all on our radar and we hope to be able to make many of them available in the future.

Tech got a reaction from Welchrisk in formZ 7 "Hot Fix" for OS X 10.10 Yosemite
formZ v8.0 fully supports OS X 10.10 “Yosemite” but if you are still using form•Z 7, we are releasing a “hot fix” which should generally make this compatible with OS X 10.10.  Please follow these steps (or upgrade to the current version):

    • Be sure that you have form•Z 7.3.4. This fix will only work for form•Z 7.3.4. If you don't have it, you can download it here:  www.formz.com/update
    • Download libFZRT.dylib.zip. If necessary extract the zip file. You should now have a single file named “libFZRT.dylib”.
    • Locate your formZ 7.3.4 Application folder and locate the file “libFZRT.dylib”.
    • Replace the file in your installation with the one that you downloaded.
    • Launch form•Z 7.3.4!

Tech got a reaction from -andrew- in "Basic" best practices - kitchen/bath
    Hi Andrew,

When I think of "basic best practices" I think of things like organizing objects by Layers, using Grid and Object Snaps to ensure things align properly, and such.

For small custom jobs, you probably don't need to worry about Components (and while you are correct that parametric cabinetry is not yet available, we are investigating that for the future).  The only reason I would consider Components would be if you can't decide between different cabinet styles, and you could use Components to switch from one style to another, but for a smaller job, that could just as easily be done by changing the visibility of different layer(s).

If you are looking at cabinets or fixtures from specific manufacturers, many companies offer 3d models that can be downloaded from their site and simply Imported into formZ.  If they include Smooth Geometry, it may be best to first set the Display Resolution to 0% before Importing (or set that in the Import Options) to reduce the total number of facets that are generated for the data.

The Object Doctor tool can be useful to diagnose (and often to fix) geometry that has been imported from other programs.   Be especially careful if you are importing data from SketchUp as it is notorious for generating bad data.

Using the Mesh tool on surfaces that are to be Tiled is an easy way to generate a grid on the surface.

There are many predefined materials included with formZ -- just choose them from the Material Parameters: Libraries:

There are also many companies that offer collections of materials and textures that you can use, but which is best for you depends on the types of surfaces that you intend to use.  Perhaps some other forum members can recommend their favorites.

Coinciding with the release of formZ 8, we're launching a new initiative called the formZ LAB. The LAB is dedicated to unlocking the potential of formZ’s extensions for architects, designers, and artists.

The LAB's first tool, Profiles is ready to download today. For full details, visit the LAB blog, here:

Tech got a reaction from Leonidas in Opening Large FormZ 8 File
    Hi Leonidas,

Sorry you are having trouble.  As we discussed on the phone, the model that you multi-copied many many many times contained a lot of bad geometry, and was using 100% Display Resolution, which caused more than 10 times the number of polygons necessary for each of these instances.  As far as recovering your current file, if you tried the things we suggested to you, then as we mentioned, the next step is to send in the file and we will see what we can do to help.

    Hi Alan,

The Not Responding can occur when formZ is working on an intensive operation and generally does not indicate a problem.  (You can check the formZ Process CPU and RAM activity in the Task Manager to see if it is still working on the operation.)  Of course, if you ever have any issue that does not complete an operation in a reasonable time, or does actually crash, please let us know and we will get it corrected ASAP.

Tech got a reaction from gwertz in High Poly to Low Poly
    Hi Gwertz,

If you have Smooth objects, you can simply adjust their Display Resolution to change their Facetted Representation by picking the object(s), going to the Attributes Tab of the Pick Options, and changing the Basic Attributes to Display Resolution.

For Facetted objects, there is a Reduce Mesh tool (on the Meshes tool row) that allows you to simplify objects, but it will result in non-planar surfaces, so you will likely also want to Triangulate the object after it has been Reduced.

It is not as good as building the model at the desired resolution in the first place, but it can help.

Tech got a reaction from 3dworks in FZ801 - issue when switching tool options from copy to single, perpendicular constraint is not kept
Right -- any copy mode will do it -- but the key was to be snapping to something else when toggling the copy mode (while also using perpendicular).  That was the key to be able to reproduce (and thus report) the issue...

Yes, the fix for the smoothing issue is quite extensive, but that is the plan.

    Hi Evan,

Yes, the DAE and SKP formats pretty much require a complete re-write now that it is 64 bit, but we are working on this for the not too distant future.
