Tech got a reaction from Jaakko in Render animation in vray?
Animations should render in V-Ray for formZ. We just did a quick test here with 8.6.1 and we were able to render a simple animation (albeit very few frames). Please let us know if you are still having issue with this version.

Also the formZ imager was updated in v8.6.1 to support batch rendering with V-Ray for formZ. You can update formZ Pro to v8.6.1 here: http://www.formz.com/products/formz/update/formz_86_Update.html

Tech got a reaction from Des in sub D help
FZnoob is correct that you need to be aware of the number of sides in your faces, however what is most important is to avoid having faces with more than 4 edges. At its heart subD's can only work with triangles and quads so formZ has to breakup the model to handle any faces with more than 4 sides. This gives you very little control with what happens with these faces. Its better to clean the yourself to get predictable results. Note that sometimes face may look like it only has 4 sides, but if an edge of an adjacent face touches an edge of a give face forming a "T" intersection, then the that face will have and additional point to maintain the connection. This is the case with the "large angled face" of the model. (see attached).

Here is what we did with your model to get better results:

    1. We noticed that you have some probably unintended unclean intersection at two of the corners. We cleaned this up with the Delete topology tool (see image).
2 .We used the object doctor to clean up the model some more (extra co-linear edges etc...).
    3. We used the insert segment tool (along with the perpendicular snap) to add edges that traverse the "large angled face. Note that these need to "wrap" all the way under the model to the other side to avoid creating a bottom face with more than 4 sides! we just kept inserting segments around the model to get the result using the point and perpendicular snaps.

See the attached image for the results this achieved (top line).

Once you have the model in clean triangles and quads, you can use operations line the trinm tool with the stitch option to add detail witch will affect the SubD form. In this example we used a plane and the trim and stitch tool to add a line of detail through the model. Notice the effect on the resulting subD! (bottom line).

We have attached our model as well.

    We hope this helps!

    Highlights of enhancements in v8.6.1:
    • Enable Advanced OpenGL has been added to the OpenGL preferences (Edit->Preferences->OpenGL). This new option will enable the latest version of OpenGL available on your system. For many systems this will increase performance of the shaded and wireframe displays, however this option is not compatible with all graphics cards and drivers so it is off by default. On Mac OS, this option is only available for v10.10 or later.
    • Copy and paste of objects with materials assigned to faces now works as expected.
    • Repeat and continuous copy modes no longer display some objects in wireframe.
    • Copy/paste then undo/redo components now work properly.
    • Redo on any operation involving a component now maintains components properly.
    • Support for Windows 10 improved.

    • Undo files are more size efficient and less likely to become full and leave undo command dimmed.
    • Palettes positioned at the edge of the screen are no longer clamped to the screen edge when form•Z is restarted.
    • Dimensions and Notes now print at higher resolution.
    • The display resolution is now maintained when two wire objects are joined.
    • Changes to the animation options or tracks now refresh the shaded preview properly.
    • A warning is now issued if the scratch disk location (preferences->scratch Disk->custom) is not accessible as this can disable Undo/Redo.
    • Restoring 2-point perspective views in the view palette now works properly.
    • In certain project files, renaming of materials now works.
    • On Mac OS 10.13, the palettes no longer become semi-transparent and immobile when dragged from the palette dock on certain systems.
    • The Layout Title block section of the Project Settings now works properly.
    • Numerous stability and performance improvements.

Tech got a reaction from Des in Frame: square cross section?
Cylinders along the edges and spheres of the same radius at the points is the only solution that yields a clean model at the joints for any source object  We considered offering other cross sections, however, they will inevitably lead to unintended result for many source objects. These objects would likelyhave undesirable results at the joints and my not be usable for other operations.

Having said that, there are some exceptions that could be useful. For example square cross sections on source objects with 90 degree corners. Certainly something we can consider if there is interest.

As Des suggested the derivative 3D wall tool can be used to create part of this effect. Its even easier if you pre-pick the sources using the area pick tool with the face topology level and use the "Perpendicular to Surface" option in the 3D wall tool. This allows you to create a 3D walls from each face at the same height in one step.

Tech got a reaction from andrew in formZ 6.7.3 "Hot Fix" for OS X 10.13 High Sierra
It appears that Apple dropped support for certain formats of legacy bitmap graphics in OS X 10.13 High Sierra. form•Z 6 uses this format for some of its palette graphics. To fix this you will need to replace the resource file in your current installation with a new one that contains updated graphics that are supported by OS X 10.13.

    Please follow these Steps:

    • Be sure that you have form•Z 6.7.3 installed. This fix will only work for form•Z 6.7.3. If you don't have it, you can download it here:  http://www.formz.com/products/formz/update/formz_6_Upgrade_Professional.html
    • Download "formZ_RenderZone_Plus.rsrc.zip" below if you have a form•Z RenderZone Plus installation or "formZ.rsrc.zip" if you have a regular form•Z installation. If necessary, extract the zip file. You should now have a file named “formZ RenderZone Plus.rsrc” or "formZ.rsrc".
    • Locate your formZ 6.7.3 Application folder (Usually in Applications/formZ/)
    • Right-click on the "formZ RenderZone Plus" or "formZ" application icon and select "Show Package Contents" from the menu.
    • Open the "Contents" Folder.
    • Open the "Resources" Folder.
    • Replace resource file in the "Resources" Folder with the one that you downloaded.
    • Launch form•Z 6.7.3!

    Hi All,

Sorry for the lack of response here in the last few weeks. We have been absorbed with the response to V-Ray for form•Z and work in progress on an updated 8.6 and new features and collaborations for form•Z 9.

We have received some great feedback on V-Ray for form•Z. We are really excited the results that form•Z users have been able to achieve in a very short time. Some users have requested additional V-Ray features that were not in our original scope. These will be coming soon along with a few adjustments that you would expect with a new product. Some of these are features that you will find in V-Ray for 3D Studio Max, but not V-Ray for SketchUp or V-Ray for Rhino. We are working on compatibility with the form•Z Imager. pkcn, the card you mention should work with V-Ray for form•Z. How did you conclude that it was not working?

Yes we are a small team, but we love what we do and we care for everyone who uses our creations. Please recognize that the development of V-Ray for form•Z was a huge undertaking and investment that we would not have made if we did not believe in the future of form•Z and its users. Chaos Group creates the plugins for the other solutions so you will naturally see more marketing of these solutions on their site. Expect to see more publicity on V-Ray for form•Z in the coming months.

We are certainly not hibernating. The founders are involved in the company so your speculations are misplaced. We all miss Paul and his efforts on this forum. We will try to do better at following the standard he set. Keep in mind that you can reach us by email at support@form•Z.com as well!
