    Problems with material palette

v9.0 is not compatible with Big Sur. We do have a Pre-release version of v9.1, that is compatible with Big Sur. We are still working though a few issues in this version, but it performs well overall! You will find a button for the v9.1 pre-release version on the v9.0 download page (the link is in the email you received with your v9 license codes). Note that v9.1 installs into a discreet folder so v9.0 will remain available in case you encounter any issues with v9.1.
  2. We are pleased to announce AutoDesSys was a recently awarded an Epic MegaGrant to create an interface between form•Z and Epic’s Unreal Engine and Twinmotion. The Datasmith plugin for form•Z is the first product of this exciting collaboration. This plugin allows you to quickly and easily convert your form•Z 3D model for use in Unreal Engine 4 and Twinmotion. A Technology Preview of the Datasmith plugin for form•Z is now available here: http://www.formz.com/fzsite1219/products/unreal.html
  3. formZ v8.0 fully supports OS X 10.10 “Yosemite” but if you are still using form•Z 7, we are releasing a “hot fix” which should generally make this compatible with OS X 10.10. Please follow these steps (or upgrade to the current version): • Be sure that you have form•Z 7.3.4. This fix will only work for form•Z 7.3.4. If you don't have it, you can download it here: www.formz.com/update • Download libFZRT.dylib.zip. If necessary extract the zip file. You should now have a single file named “libFZRT.dylib”. • Locate your formZ 7.3.4 Application folder and locate the file “libFZRT.dylib”. • Replace the file in your installation with the one that you downloaded. • Launch form•Z 7.3.4! libFZRT_dylib.zip

    New update 9.0.6

The cause of the hanging in Hugo's file was determined to be an excess of empty animation tracks. The development team is devising a better way to handle these in the future.

    New update 9.0.6

If the problem persists without the Reference File then you don't need to include it.

    New update 9.0.6

Hugo, Would you be able to send the trouble file to support@formz.com? An 86MB file seems like a very reasonable file size and we would like to investigate the source of the hanging. Please include any Reference Files and image maps involved.
  7. Technology Preview v1.0.1.0 is now available (formZ 9.0.6.1 minimum required) here: http://www.formz.com/fzsite1219/products/unreal.html CHANGES • Double Sided materials option enabled by default. • Datasmith now implemented as two exporter plugins, one specialized for Twinmotion and the other for Unreal engine. Each maintains its own set of export options. FIXES • Improved missing texture search and re-linking. • Renderzone procedural textures are now supported. (Bitmap texture versions will appear as they do in formZ's Shaded viewport modes). • Datasmith exporter sorted alphabetically in exporters list. • Export options now saved in formZ's preferences file. KNOWN ISSUES • Hidden objects are visible when imported into Unreal/Twinmotion. Epic is aware of this and is working on a fix. For now, keep the export option "Visible Objects Only" enabled.
  8. It is installing into the proper location: "/Applications/formZ 9/plugins". It is should not be moved to "/Applications/formZ 9/FormZ 9.0 pro/plugins". If you do this it may get removed or interfere with future updates of form•Z itself. The problem is likely that /Applications/formZ 9/plugins is missing from the plugins search paths on your machine. This path should get added automatically. You can check the plugin paths in Extensions->Extensions Manager->Search Paths. If its missing from the list, you can add it with the "+" at the bottom . If the path is in the list, be sure it has is active (check mark.) We tested this process here on a clean installation and the /Applications/formZ 9/plugins path was properly added to the plugins search paths so we are puzzled as to why it is missing on your machine. Note you that can also reset the plugin search paths by removing the file "formZ Previous9.fpo" from the /Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/autodessys/formZ 9.0 pro folder (\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\autodessys\formZ 9.0 pro directory on Windows). Note that this will remove any custom paths that you may have added.
  9. Please confirm that you are using v9.0.6.1. Also check that the plugin directory is in the extensions search paths and is active (Extensions->Extensions Manager->Search Paths). The plugin path is "/Applications/formZ 9/plugins" on Macintosh and "\Program Files\formZ 9\plugins" on Windows. It should get added automatically, but if its missing you can add it with the "+" at the bottom of the list. If you are using Windows, there are a few Microsoft redistributables that get installed. On occasion they do not install properly so try running the plugin installer again.
  10. We are actively working on this and have most of the issues resolved. We can report that form•Z is now running well on Big Sur on Intel and arm64 (using Rosetta 2.) We need more time for some in-house testing before we make it available but it hopefully it will be available in a few weeks.
  11. You can get the plugin from here: http://www.formz.com/fzsite1219/products/unreal.html. We are calling this a Technology Preview at this time as the plugin is better than a beta, but not quite complete as a release. Frankly we are hoping to get some feedback as it is used and see what improvements if any need to be made. Epic is also working on improvements in the datasmith API that will allow us to add more functionality including a live link between formZ and Unreal/Twinmotion (hence removing the export/import cycle making this a great tool during the design process). We expect to roll out updates as soon as these improvements are ready and at some point we will move it from a Technology Preview to a release bundled with the shipping form•Z app.
  12. If you select a material and open it in the Material Parameters palette, you can rename it there in the Name field at the top.

    New update 9.0.6

"Check for update" now shows 9.0.6 as available. Please note that we always wait 24-48 hours after posting a new version before updating the "check for update" notification just to be sure the distribution is sound before mass installations begin. You can always install the latest version from the link you received with your latest license codes. Here are the highlights of this version. form•Z v9.0.6 (#A283): New stuff SKP translator updated to import/export SketchUp 2020 files. Plus these improvements: - Import performance significantly improved. - Objects will be surfaces by default unless “Construct Solids” is enabled (which is now on by default for new installations). - Import now maintains layers and materials properly. - Non-Roman characters in file names now supported for import and export. - Non-Roman characters in layer name and Material names are now supported. - Import now includes wire objects. - Exporting files with metric units works as expected. General Contour Sections no longer affected by manipulating corresponding Transform Controller Conflicts resolved that could cause Key Shortcuts to stop working. Arc 3 can be inverted with the CMD/Ctrl (Mac/Win) key. Objects created by Duplicate (Edit menu) remain selected. Reference Files window displays correct name. DXF export and import now supports Non-Roman characters in the file name. Exporting DAE and KMZ files works properly Windows Check for Update works as expected no on systems with certain Windows settings. Alt key tap key works as expected Draft Layout Grid Snap now works as expected when combined with the Guide snap Python scripting unfold.py script now works as expected. Scripts are maintained in the Extensions menu and are sorted properly. The getLayer() and setLayer object method have been improved. Additional performance and stability improvements.
  14. We do not recommend using Big Sur with form•Z yet. We are still investigating a few issues that have been reported. We hope to have more details on this soon. We will eventually be able to support the new Apple arm64 chips natively, however please understand that this will take some time. While the Rosetta 2 feature of Big Sur allows non-native code to run on arm64, the system prevents you from mixing arm64 code and x86_64 code in the same process. While we could make a native version of form•Z rather quickly, it will take some time for all of the vendors that we work with for extensions and plugins to make arm64 versions of their technology available. This will mitigate the usefulness of a native form•Z app in the short term.

    V9 update

We are actively exploring the issue where the key shortcuts stop working. For those experiencing the issue, do you happen to be using custom key shortcuts to activate navigation tools? If so, could you please save your Key Shortcuts through 'Edit > Key Shortcuts' within form•Z and submit the shortcut file to support@formz.com?

    Duplication Offset

Thank you for the feedback. We have the issue logged and hope to have a fix in place in an upcoming build! For now, you should be able to use the Move tool set to "Repeat copy" in the Tool Options palette to do the same thing. In the future, please send reports of issues to support@formz.com so that we can better monitor these problems.
  19. It appears that Apple dropped support for certain formats of legacy bitmap graphics in OS X 10.13 High Sierra. form•Z 6 uses this format for some of its palette graphics. To fix this you will need to replace the resource file in your current installation with a new one that contains updated graphics that are supported by OS X 10.13. Please follow these Steps: • Be sure that you have form•Z 6.7.3 installed. This fix will only work for form•Z 6.7.3. If you don't have it, you can download it here: http://www.formz.com/products/formz/update/formz_6_Upgrade_Professional.html • Download "formZ_RenderZone_Plus.rsrc.zip" below if you have a form•Z RenderZone Plus installation or "formZ.rsrc.zip" if you have a regular form•Z installation. If necessary, extract the zip file. You should now have a file named “formZ RenderZone Plus.rsrc” or "formZ.rsrc". • Locate your formZ 6.7.3 Application folder (Usually in Applications/formZ/) • Right-click on the "formZ RenderZone Plus" or "formZ" application icon and select "Show Package Contents" from the menu. • Open the "Contents" Folder. • Open the "Resources" Folder. • Replace resource file in the "Resources" Folder with the one that you downloaded. • Launch form•Z 6.7.3! formZ_RenderZone_Plus.rsrc.zip formZ.rsrc.zip

    Form Z Free update

Sorry this is a typo on the web page. The installer will install the latest version. Thanks for bringing this to out attention!
  21. We have updated the form•Z Tips and Tricks on the form•Z website (Support->Tips and Tricks). Now searchable and easier to navigate! http://www.formz.com/fzsite1219/manuals/TnT/index.htm#t=Front_Page.htm
  22. For many years we have had requests for a viewer app for form•Z files on a laptop or desktop computer. form•Z Viewer is a new app based on the v9 interface. More mature than a beta, but its never been out in the wild. Please let us know what you think! Click on the icon below....
  23. formZ v9.0.4 is now available. Select "Check for update" from the Help menu to be directed to the download page or use the link in the email you previously received with your v9 installer codes. form•Z v9.0.4 (#A12A) Highlights New stuff “Dynamic” is a new option in the Extend Segment tool options. When selected, the extension is made dynamically using the projection of the cursor position onto the tangent from the end of the object. General Components with Flat/Cubic/Spherical decal controls now render properly in RenderZone. Save a Copy as to v8.x now works properly for files with embedded components. The objects palette is now updated properly after Components are exploded. Changing the name of a view or layer to an existing name, no longer leads to repeated messages about the duplicate name. The fillet tool is applied to the selected point for certain objects. Import from Drafting now groups the imported objects properly. Exiting the Cone of Vision, no longer disturbs the palettes under certain conditions. Certain Sub-d tools no longer automatically apply unintended symmetry Draft/Layout Frames are now properly updated when the linked Model file is changed. The title blocks folder is selected by default when choosing a title block. The offset outline tool now works properly on closed shapes. The Image and Image fit tools now track the cursor properly when placing images. Python scripting Python scripts now work properly on some Windows 10 machines that previously did not recognize Python. A new method (material) has been added to the “face” object to retrieve the material assigned to the face (face.material). The “object” method getLocalOrigin()now returns the proper value fz.pickList() now returns a valid empty list when nothing is picked. fz.viewList(), fz.materialList() and fz.lightList() now returns a valid empty list when the project does not contain any of the respective entities. fz.revolve() angle parameter now works properly. Object methods edgeCount(), edge(), edgeList() now work as expected. A number of sample scripts have been updated.
  24. form•Z v9.0.3 (#A123) highlights New stuff “Superimpose” is a new option in the Underlay options of the Reference Plane Parameters palette. When selected, the underlay is Superimposed in shaded views instead of depth sorted. This is most useful when combined with the transparency slider to see the undelay image through a shaded image. “Give Guide Snaps Priority” is a new option in the snap options Palette. When selected, Guide Snaps are given priority over object snaps (when both are enabled). If the cursor is close to both a guide and a snappable point/edge/face, the location will be snapped to the guide rather than the point/edge/face. When this option is disabled, the opposite rule is applied. This option is now on by default by popular request as it makes the guides more functional in shaded rendering modes. The option can be controlled with a key shortcut as well (Key Shortcuts manager). General improvements Export of hidden line images to pixel based formats (TIFF/PNG/JPG etc.) now works properly. Underlay images no longer disappear when switching from wireframe to shaded full and the back to wireframe on machines with certain graphics cards. Components with Flat/Cubic/Spherical texture map controls now render properly in RenderZone. Using Reduce Mesh tool no longer crashes on certain objects. Files with mirrored components now show the components properly when saving and re-opening the file. Curve and Surface Formula tools now show all the formulas in the Interface. View navigation in the Decals and Classic Texture Map dialog now works properly. The “Pick By” and “Assign” options in the Classic Texture Map dialog now work properly. Door/Window component’s are now are placed at the proper depth. The Section tool now properly honors the Status of objects (Ghost or Delete). Windows specific The Transform tool no longer crashes when entering a second value for the Scale option. Draft/Layout Printing or exporting to PDF no longer misses some elements. Printing or exporting to PDF now includes title blocks properly. Printing from draft space now works as expected. Image elements no longer have a border when printed or exported to pdf. The Layout content tools no longer become randomly dimmed. Layout frames now update properly when the model is changed.
