Let me give you an advise: forget about component system in FormZ. It is a total mess. I tried to sort it out on on pretty complex project which resulted total rebuild of all component related modeling. Neither forum nor Support where of help since component system is faulty by design. Alas!

Last few months I uploaded several movie’s with errors to ADS support, they were happy to see these bugs in a movie. It makes supporting and solving much easier, they said.  I’m using the latest version of the software and I am happy I could help them in this way.
Today I have read this complete thread again and again it seems we users lost our interests. More than a year ago today; no input. So I give it a little kick...
ADS, how is it going these days with the development of the next version? Is there anything you can bring to the forum?

Hugo got a reaction from Jaakko in Workaround for Layout? ...anybody use it this way?
here an update about my work flow:

about making sections. Yesterday I spend all day to find a way how to produce 2D output with 2D Layout WIP in combination with all other programs I can use in my office, such as Vectorworks 2014, AutoCAD 2017, Indesign, Affinity Designer. I couldn't find a way to get any result.
    But...

as I described above, I continued working on that workflow related to a more architectural project with higher complexity. Using the section tool in the 3D model and copy the 2D section into another 3D model (with or without layer override options) works fine and rock solid. It is easy to add some more details, or other objects with shaded filling, layers, add dimensions etc. All of it took only little time. The benefit is override layer options. Think about what you can do with this... Let's say make a texture instead of a hatch. If you communicate with other company's they do not really need millions of hatch lines. So that's not important. They do want the main objects. And because 3D model work with good geometry, thats handy.

Now, crucial in the workflow I am talking about is printing output.
I found out I could print to a PDF on scale! All materials nicely shown in the section, because actually the geometry is exactly as it is modelled in a 3D model, although it is now 2D.

What ADS could do is add a little more options about printing output, such as layered PDF, viewports like we can use with the Renderzone rendering.
I believe the solution of all problems with 2D layout module could be just using the 3D modeller, in any way.

If I find some time I will make a movie about this workflow. Or If anyone is interested to develop this workflow with me, let me know.
At least for this moment... it works.

Hugo got a reaction from Jaakko in form•Z Anniversary | Thank You
The first time I started to model with FormZ was late 1994. I came from an Unix HP workstation with a French 3D program called Star_UX. That software was amazing, although it only worked on Unix at the time. I bought FormZ the moment I started my own company in 1994 and remember I got completely frustrated the first 2 weeks working with my new 3D modeller FormZ. Didn't get a clue how it worked... After 2 weeks, started from scratch, bit by bit and yes! I got it. From that moment it became THE 3D modelling tool for me. Since then I am a happy FormZ user most of the time.
The FormZ 3D modeller became at the end of the story my main Cad program, because it works so nicely, ...in 3D. 😊
Congratulations ADS and I am looking forward to the next version, hopefully we hear soon...

    Kim,

I would go a step further. In the past I suggested ADS to share my experiance in 3D modeling, not using it the way 95% of the market does. ADS never reacted on my suggestion in my mail. Not interested???

Anyway, I am willing to come to the USA to meet users and discuss the future of FMZ with ADS. Lets say a small conference about FMZ.

.... What do you users and ADS think of that?

    Hello Tech

    Hello Formz
That a new «general update» comes out at the end of this month (as mentioned just above) is finally good news.   I beg you urgent to finally get started now and tiden up the so confused situation:   1) Mini-Updates, which are not precisely defined on your download site – and still have a big impact. 2) A user interface, whose faultiness is nothing to compare on the market. And last but not least 3) A communication policy, that really tugs at the patience of many of us users.   Please, please: Finally clear up, there on the 3518 Riverside Drive..!   Best greetings from Switzerland, old Europe – Cheers!

    Hi All,

Sorry for the lack of response here in the last few weeks. We have been absorbed with the response to V-Ray for form•Z and work in progress on an updated 8.6 and new features and collaborations for form•Z 9.

We have received some great feedback on V-Ray for form•Z. We are really excited the results that form•Z users have been able to achieve in a very short time. Some users have requested additional V-Ray features that were not in our original scope. These will be coming soon along with a few adjustments that you would expect with a new product. Some of these are features that you will find in V-Ray for 3D Studio Max, but not V-Ray for SketchUp or V-Ray for Rhino. We are working on compatibility with the form•Z Imager. pkcn, the card you mention should work with V-Ray for form•Z. How did you conclude that it was not working?

Yes we are a small team, but we love what we do and we care for everyone who uses our creations. Please recognize that the development of V-Ray for form•Z was a huge undertaking and investment that we would not have made if we did not believe in the future of form•Z and its users. Chaos Group creates the plugins for the other solutions so you will naturally see more marketing of these solutions on their site. Expect to see more publicity on V-Ray for form•Z in the coming months.

We are certainly not hibernating. The founders are involved in the company so your speculations are misplaced. We all miss Paul and his efforts on this forum. We will try to do better at following the standard he set. Keep in mind that you can reach us by email at support@form•Z.com as well!

I have to interject here and say that I'm NOT looking forward to BIM tools if they add any extra steps to what is currently possible for modeling in FormZ.  FormZ has to be the fastest, most efficient modeler I have ever used!  It's this efficient modeling that has kept us with it all these years.  Please do not change these basic, yet powerful modeling tools.

Now, if you want to add extra features, optionally available to some users, that'd be great, the more FormZ users the better.  But please do not turn FormZ into a Rhino, Revit, Fusion360, etc.  Just drawing in 3D with those tools is a pain compared to building in 3D with FormZ.  Example, lets draw a continuous 10' H wall with curved and straight segments in anything but FormZ?  Many, many extra steps!

More than anything, I think FormZ needs a better GUI that is much more streamlined and approachable in it's default state.  The current version is far too inefficient in its default state.  I do like that it is customizable, but that doesn't help new users, who are instantly turned away by the oversized icons, redundant labeling, and ugly beige background of the modeling window.  Let's go back to classic white or possibly gray, but the beige is unprofessional and quite frankly, unbearable.  A nice gray GUI would be awesome for reducing eye fatigue after hours at the desk.  It seems every other platform has gone this direction.  The temporary pop up palettes of earlier FormZ's were more efficient, and only visible when called upon, instead of the current versions 'palettes, palettes, everywhere.'

Second, we need a better default rendering engine.  Either upgrade RenderZone with more modern features (faster, progressive/interactive, emitter materials, GPU accelerated, etc.) or leave it as a legacy product and integrate a truly modern rendering engine as the default.  VRay, Thea, Maxwell, iRay+, Indigo, Radeon ProRender.... ANYTHING, would be better than the old RenderZone.  Hell, even the Cycles engine is free now!  There are so many low cost options that any of these should be a priority to FormZ's future before implementing a giant BIM type system.

    Just my $.02

I have investigated different 3D applications several years now. I have used Form Z, Archicad, Fusion 360, Rhino, Autocad, Blender, Modo, Sketchup, 3d Max and many others. Main interest is fast concept modelling for architectural purposes: urban planning, building design, massing and so on.

I claim that I understand quite well the needs and maneuvers for efficient concept design. Conclusion is that we need modeling paradigm that allows us to model in nondestructive way. There is still huge demand for that kind of software.

Upcoming feature(s) in FormZ should be at minimum the following: boolean operations with ongoing and endure relations (you can edit operands and operators during modeling process). There is a screen shot of the desired situation when modifying masses. Just grab the boolean operator and enjoy.

One of the best boolean system is in Archicad. It gives you almost insolent simple way to manage boolean operators and it is nondestructive process.

In Modo 10.1(coming soon) you'll get very sophisticated construction history or modifier stack. As we know Modos interface is just beautiful but it is very sloooooow when modeling city or complex building with new procedural modeling system they are offering. It is definitely amazing when modeling one or two objects.

When you are modeling conceptual visions of urban areas you need quick calculations from constantly altering measures, areas and volumes. Some kind of tool or script should be in Form Z. Now I am deriving bottom faces of the volumes and putting them on their own layer. Then I use information management window to generate the sum. In multistorey building you have to copy that face several times.

We need quick exploration oriented application for architectural design.

Archicad and Revit are too massive programs for early stage design purposes. They offer you crowbar for knitting. Sketchup is quite nice but as we know the basic engine is not very good for complex boolean operations and you suddenly became aware of the most destructive modeling app in market. Sketchup models are well-known for bad geometry. And when your colleague is busy and nervous the result is horrible. You can make nice presentations but the model itself is usually a mess.

Rhino is quite nice also, but it is not for exploration or adventurous modeling unless you start to use Grasshopper. But, again, you should see through Grasshopper and understand its generative (iterative) nature. Basic massing tasks are behind of everything and more you concentrate on that more great urban environment you will get. When massing task is done you can concentrate to generate ”granulations” with GH.

Form Z should be THE architectural massing application in the market, for complex exploration and calculation. The interface should be revamped also (yes, again). MODO has now the best GUI on planet. When you see the MODO interface you start to drool and explore the software. But it is not designed enough well for architectural purposes.

Ok thanks for reading. Lets hope that FormZ will get more commercial users soon and the team will get enough resources to continue great software.

Agree, HL is very poor. Recently i downloaded Rhino 3D and the way the dimensions work and shows is just the way i think it should be. Don’t forget Vectorworks! That’s my reference program for how a line drawing with all kind of annotations should look like in a CAD output file.

I can use denoiser on my Mac Pro, but I can't when using a batch rendering on my 3 computers with the Network Monitor.

When choosing all the MXS files, in the menu I see the option select denoise, but not able to select.

How can I use this option during my batch rendering?

I have already posted requests for most of these, but why not something to refresh your memory!

    Top Ten FormZ 9 requests:

    1. Hidden line DWG export from within FormZ (not from Layout) at 1:1 scale and from common 0,0,0 point.  I can't express enough how much this would streamline and improve my workflow.  I still need to look into if this is possible from Layout, but it would be far better to have it export directly from FormZ.

    2. Return of midpoint snap

    3. Select by Criteria material selection box improvement - material name list view and larger selection box

    4. Operand & Edit menu palette - Status palette showing Edit drop down current choices (Keep/Delete/Ghost, Group lock/unlock, Component lock/unlock, Selection Preview on/off, etc.)

    5. Real time light intensity sliders for shaded full

    6. Improvement to components - stability & reliability…less buggy

    7. Step by step reveal (reversing step by step isolate)

    8. Loss of input box upon mouse pan and/or guideline placement - a bug since v7!

    9. Shaded Full ambient occlusion on/off option box for individual objects, similar to Override edge display option

    10. Fixed numeric amount Reshape option

    11. BONUS =  Fix clipping plane color and add normal lineweights for cut line - color choice is buggy and doesn't always show the correct color.  Instead of 1-5 just have normal line weights for the cut line.

    12.  EXTRA BONUS = Fix Imager!!!  I have posted on how & why it is broken beyond repair for me currently.

For context I am an architect working on single family residential projects.  I also dabble a bit in commercial and furniture design.  I use Vectorworks for 2D plans, detailed 2D sections and architectural details, and notes/dimensions.  3D model is built in FormZ.  I subtract 2D elevations (shaded full renders and hidden line DWG export for CAD lines) and export to Vectorworks for notes/dimensions.  I of course also use FormZ extensively for the design process, virtual live client walk throughs (desktop software and iPad app), and rendering.  Layout just isn't as robust yet as Vectorworks and the graphic qualities of Vectorworks + the amazing set of floor plan tools keeps me there for 2D work and composing my printed sheets.  For anything and everything 3D I use FormZ from start to finish on every project.  I do not rebuild a BIM model in Vectorworks.  The more I can take advantage of my FormZ model the better.

Thanks for listening!!!  Excited to see the new version...

Agree that 3D modelling works well, but my experiance about creating output, is poor. My most recent issue; in 1 3D model i had to export 1 object with dimensions as a 3D DWG. In total 12 different layers as 12 seperate DWG's. The result: 4 layers perfect, 8 layers missing the objects. And when using hiddenline, text is created in many single segments not readable at all. Not to speak about layout or getting consistent vector output in any way. My standard for WYSIWYG is Vectorworks. Probably the best graphics output in CAD. In an earlier post i mention about many little issues, as if the software is developed in a hurry.

If i only modelling and render with Maxwell, i am happy with the result. If i need all kind of other, lets say (2D) output... then... pffffff

To say something positive, 3D modelling, the way it can be done is very nice.
