  1. I'm PC based now, but my first FormZ dabbling was on a Mac. Way back in '94 ...I remained on Mac until around 2005, then went PC. Over the years I've worked freelance for long periods... All the studios I've freelanced using FormZ have been Mac based. So, at least in the 'Design Consultancy' market, you would lose a significant market if you dropped Mac. Though it may often seem like it, not all industries are PC based.

Hi Des, I have similar issue on Windows ....click to 'Open in Vray Material Editor' in the Material Parameters toolbox window...Default Editor window opens, but as soon as I click the window, it disappears. ....if I check in the windows taskbar there is a Vray icon ....click this, the window opens again and I can edit, it will remain open until I close.. I'm not a mac user... but maybe this helps?

    Windows 10 on ARM Support

Pretty sure Apple have a plan ...All the debating about the capabilities of ARM as we know it.... is likely being short sighted. A lot can happen in two years. Developing FormZ for ARM? ....(whatever the eventual Mac development is?) ..... Very likely

    V-Ray for FZ update?

BTW ... Vray V5 for 3dmax is out of Beta and was released a few hours ago....

    V-Ray for FZ update?

I think you are mistaken as Vray FormZ is developed by ADS as an integral plug-in. Which means, for the moment development is behind Chaosgroup releases as it is not developed in tandem. .....So it's unlikely Vray FormZ will ever be a part of a Chaos package deal unless by agreement between ADS and Chaos.

    VRAY - Huge Material Problem!

You can change the extension from .vismat to .vrmat and they'll open in formZ.... If the file contains functions that are available in SketchUp or Rhino but not in FormZ, the file will still open, but without those functions.... generally they work fine.... I've noticed that if you open and save in FormZ they respond better (not so many issues of invisible previews and flickering windows... once saved, the textures are saved to a 'maps' folder by default...so if the original textures were loose; you'll get a double up of textures, you can delete the loose textures. https://vismats.com/materials.html http://www.cadnav.com/vray-materials/ http://sketchupvraymaterials.blogspot.com/ https://www.sketchuptexture.com/search/label/VISMAT VRAY SKETCHUP

    Toon Material

Am I missing something? I have FormZ 8.6 with Vray (windows) ....No Toon option? Has there been an update I'm not aware of? If so, how do I get it? ...I've checked both websites; can't find anything. Confused Thanks.

    form•Z 8.6 Update Released

V-Ray for form•Z v3.6.6 released? .....is this just a typo? ...the email sent refers to v8.6.6 but update is labeled 8.6.5? Thanks Martin

    formZ v8.6.4 released

K, I've established the error I reported in earlier posts... If I import .fbx files the textures are mirrored ONLY in renderzone as Justin noted; They are correctly orientated in shade and full shade and also vray. So the error is within the renderzone import settings... I've checked it on multiple files... ALL contain the same display error. I did send the formz and fbx files to tech support; but have received no response other than the receipt of file. I prefer to assume that tech is working on correcting the error in the next update? This does not address the display mismatches in the material editor... but they may be related? Martin.

    formZ v8.6.4 released

Justin Thanks...You're right! Thanks for that, it just hadn't occurred to me But still have the issue of some wrong (mismatching) textures displaying in Material Parameters under shaded. I'll send an amended error report to Tech Thanks Justin

    formZ v8.6.4 released

Tech Emailed the file and textures thru... Here is the Vray materials parameter ...(didn't previously post as it displays correctly) the issue seems to be a fight between shaded and renderzone? Martin

    formZ v8.6.4 released

Tech, Thanks for the response ....The bottom image is Vray (just default product render setting) ....the image above Renderzone. As soon as I can get back on the machine I'll forward you the file.... But this issue is not restricted to this file. +It also happens when Vray is disabled. Martin

    formZ v8.6.4 released

But more critical is the difference between renders. Shaded and shaded full render the same... but renderzone renders a mirrored texture.... this is extremely trying if you want to use renderzone within your production line as Vray renders as shaded and shaded full.... On windows 10 ...1080ti

    formZ v8.6.4 released

Thanks Updated fine thru' the app update from Unfortunately still some long standing display issues not resolved on materials and shading display. 1. Shaded often shows different icons 2. Switch to renderzone and it shows the correct icon.

    Scale issues importing to Blender

Changed to actual units (metric or imperial) rather than blender units... Does this solve your issue

    Form Z error ID: 128: -35

Michele, I had a problem that froze my formZ on the opening window; if I unloaded my vray extension formz worked? I also had other version running without problem. So I assumed it was a open gl or other driver issue. Here was my route... run windows update; check all your drivers and update your graphics card from nvidea...(nvidea are always updating) I updated everything I could think of...finally the graphics card....then everything worked fine... Good luck Martin

Yes it is ... Glad it helped. Martin

    obj import issues

If I understand the issue correctly there is an easy fix. On the import dialogue the last checkbox under obj options is 'Invert Transparency' ....check that when required. Martin

Old debate, new deal? Nivida's graphic cards

''On the other hand, the CPU issue is now different. for example an AMD ThreadRipper 1950 X (CPU Mark 22076) at 680 € against a Core i7 8700K (CPU Mark 16009) at 319 € costs only 361 € more ... But is it useful?'' Not really an equal comparison. ....Either is an overkill for formZ modelling. ....the i5 range and AMD (Ryzen 5-7) range are more than adequate for formZ. However; if you are doing heavy Vray rendering and you want to utilise the machine whilst rendering? You cannot beat (price) ThreadRipper 1950 X . Simply because Vray can utilise all the cores available. So for rendering, forget the relative CPU speed advantage of the i7 8700k .... the more cores the better is king! i7 8700k = 6 cores .......Max 64gb RAM ThreadRipper 1950 X = 16 cores .......Max 128gb RAM I run an i5 x6 core with 1080ti x48gb RAM (which can handle anything I can throw at it) ....If I were to upgrade; I'd be looking at a new motherboard & Threadripper.... with threadripper you can handle a much greater amount of RAM and RAM speeds....allows you to render with little impact whilst carrying out other simultaneous tasks.... The machine would not require to be dedicated only too rendering, you could carry on modelling, using photoshop, illustrator et al with negligible slow down to your rendering speeds. My system wishlist. .....Threadripper 1950x .....minimum of 32gb RAM ..@ 3200mhz, .....Motherboard ...x399 ....(min' of 2x m2 slots). ..cheapest avail' is fine ..the performance is no different....just add on's on more expensive models up the price.(number of m2 slots, wi-fi, flashing rgb ....) .....GTX 1080ti is more than adequate (or a nice priced titanx if you can find one?).....if your machine is running heavy, 24/7, then you should look at Quadro. .... Run system off m2 memory slot (samsung 970 evo 250GB) .....Storage ..SSD for work and frequently used libraries .....Storage ...Large SATA's for archives. .... Of course there are intel's x & Extreme ranges.... but the equiv' prices are more than double AMD's.... A valuable resource to help determine your system and available parts & prices in your country is https://pcpartpicker.com/ Tried to keep this non technical ....although based on pc ....with a little thought the logic can be applied to mac systems. Always got this problem

I should say I also messaged support and they offered to have an online/screen assist session but it was resolved before we had chance to investigate.. So 1st port of call, should be to message support (if you can carryout a screenshare meet). My solution was simple (but I have no idea why it resolved my issue) 1) When you start FormZ ....a hints/help pop up screen boots by default before FormZ fully loads. The option box to switch off is a selection box in the bottom left of that screen (message... 'always show on startup'..) un select that option. ....re-start FormZ ....now it boots straight into the application with no pop up start/hints screen. ...This resolved the freeze issue for me. .... 2) If you have Vray installed and you cannot even start-up due to an immediate freeze .... Goto C>Program Files>formZ 8>Plugins ...re name the contained folder ...'V-Ray for formZ' to 'V-Ray for formZ_old' This will disable Vray and you should now be able to start formZ without a freeze. Now follow the route in 1) to disable the start /hints pop-up window Close formZ... try formZ a couple of times ....no Freeze? 3) follow 2) to find folder 'V-Ray for formZ_old' again but delete the suffix _old ....leaving original folder name of V-Ray for formZ 4) re start formZ .... should now start with Vray loaded and no more freezes This worked for me ....(been using for about a month with no freezes) Try it... if not working get in touch with support. (They offered me an online meet for the following morning) Good luck Martin

    Always got this problem

I had exactly the same problem ....I have used a couple of ways round it. I have Vray installed. ....re-named the Vray folder with suffix '_old' ....so Vray does not load ....FormZ started fine. Obviously this was not a great fix as I want to use the Vray I purchased So I updated the graphics drivers.... still a recurring freeze on start-up requiring force quit. Then I switched off the 'start-up/hints window (un-ticked the always show on start). ......No problems since; even with Vray active. Worked for me, please post if this also solves your problem. Martin.....

    Extend parallel to edge?

Good solution from Justin.... andrew.... no catch, just to illustrate that there's lots of choices with the flexibility in FormZ... Here's the solution with the method I'd suggested. Created beam profile by dragging cord lines from roof....Just dropped the beam from the roof.... picked bottom face of beam and dragged up to level required to provide gap (creating 2nd object)....deleted 1st beam object. ...viola

    Extend parallel to edge?

Oh, didn't realise from the sketch that the columns were different heights, (sloped roof between columns) -my bad- ....Same quick methods can be used, but push/pull from roof face rather than column. (so perpendicular to roof face) Then just trim length of beam to intersect columns..... (you could do all of this by input dimensions if you wanted) Martin
