Also, can DUPLICATE LAUER actually duplicate everything in the Layer into a new layer?

Copy / Paste on Selected Layer is not a proper way to do this.  Example... I would have to make a layer visible, make it active, select all, make a new layer, make it active, and then paste?  This is way too many steps for what should be a simple operation.

I had to turn down the Tool Dock. And it was great decision! It was just crazy job to arrange and subpalettes and buttons on it especially they did not keep their positions. There is something strange in the palette system. The actual visual size of tool palettes is different from the reserved area of palettes.

Here's my Layout.  Object Palette is command central in my daily workflow.  Two Row header palette (without Common Tools Palette) saves space and provides maximum work area.

    Nice!

I just took it one step further to keep my modeling window a 16:9 aspect.  Second tool column with most commonly used tools added... still filling in since switching to Windows.

I like a larger material palette at the bottom like an artist or painter would use... And I HATE having to scroll in the Palette Dock to the right, so keeping materials over there doesn't work for me at all.  This way I very rarely have to scroll in the Palette Dock, since it never seems to work right.

Workspaces palette is such a waste of space.  I build a custom Workspace with every tool I use exposed before doing anything else.  I think FormZ should have this option from default.  An ULTIMATE workspace with all the tools exposed and organized.  Get rid of the cartoonishly oversized default tool icons, and make the tool palette bigger with more tools exposed.

Good news is I hear we are getting a UI refresh in v9.

    does anyone use this?

I'm asking because I don't think this palette is necessary to have open by default.  I like to keep a clean interface and I think for v9 a cleaner interface is on the horizon so I'm wondering if there are users who use this palette to click on copy/paste/open/import, etc.

These buttons are fairly common universal keyboard shortcuts or they are easily accessed from the File menu.

I would like to be able to use the "hold key + drag and drop" method implemented when duplicating layers, objects, and or materials.

Right clicking to duplicate is fine, but many other programs allow you to hold down the Alt/Option key and then click and drag whatever you want copied into a blank area.  This continuity would be very welcomed into formZ.

I'm aware of the "double click in blank space" option that can be enabled, but this is for a NEW material, not to duplicate.

I would like to see a button to refresh linked files in formZ projects.

Often I am making on-the-fly changes to image/texture files.  If my formZ file is open and I want to see these changes (like adding or removing a layer to a TIFF file) I have to go into the Material Parameters and re-load the same texture or close and re-open my file.

If would be nice if in the Project Info > Linked Files dialogue there could be a "Refresh" button as opposed to performing the above mentioned processes.

I would like to see transformation modifiers become tool-specific.

If I need to make X copies of something I'll use the move tool to do this.  Then if I want to rotate one of these items the modifier is still on multi-copy, not self.  This has caused more problems and slow-down than good while modeling.

Hi snow - when the developers read posts like yours and Justin's, they may come away with the impression that users don't find the Object palette useful; I just want them to hear an alternative viewpoint.

    Exocubic,

I don't think Justin or I were suggesting that we remove the objects palette, it was just a statement about layer/file organization.

Organizing formZ objects can be useful by grouping them... but in my experience these groups almost never stay in tact when exporting my formZ files.  this is where layers has always fared better for me.

knowing this can be done, it would be nice if an "un-round" tool can be added that automatically does this (for everyone who hasn't read this thread).

Thought I'd share something I just stumbled upon.  If you have a rounded corner that you want to bring back to its original unrounded condition, Use the Extend Tool, click on the face of the rounded corner and then an adjacent planar face and the curve is removed!

I think if formZ was able to put two materials on top of each other... like a wood panel texture and then put a user-defined material on top of it (resize, un-tile and add alpha for to make the "decal") that would be a step up.

snow got a reaction from Des in what are the size limits for models?
it could be a texture or a smooth object that isn't rebuilding properly.  try opening the file in the viewer without textures and make sure all objects in the file are facetted.  I think tech once said in v9 there will be an option to "save for viewer..." option which will help reduce/omit any issues in the file.  something to look forward to!

snow got a reaction from gordonjay in FormZ and Rendering options question
For what its worth, I think the new iMac Pro is a step in the right direction.  Also, the trashcan Mac Pro is supposedly in line for the cutting block for a more modular version of a Mac Pro.

Personally, I love the apple ecosystem too much because more often than not "it just works."  Updating Windows OS and then separate drivers for graphics, sound card, etc. and making sure they are all compatible isn't for me.

Disclaimer: I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy, so I'm a little biased

But back to the other part of the conversation, KeyShot is a CPU based renderer so a sub-par graphics card on a Mac is not a worry.  This is why I long to see a Keyshot/formZ plugin!

    Snow,

I agree C4D's Studio renderer is good but an expensive 'sledgehammer to crack a nut' if you can run Maxwell Render 4 NOW! or soon Vray 3.6 integrated inside formZ...

I've found that C4D is a fantastic out of the box renderer that plays pretty well with formZ:  export as 3DS (be cautious of objects with many smooth faces, like pegboard) and import into C4D.

The nice thing about this is that you can texture your model in formZ and then import it into C4D completely in tact, so you're not sacrificing the shaded render modes to another program.  The caveat here is that you will need to delete the lights that are imported into C4D and turn down the reflections on the materials.
