snow got a reaction from ¢hris £und in Hidden Line needs some more work
Compared to various competitors, formZ's Hidden Line is quite bad.  Often there are extra facets showing which I have to troubleshoot to find the best display resolution and/or faceting scheme (which may or may not work).  Then if I have dimensions in the model, forget it, they look horrible in HL.

Lately I've been exporting my models as DWG and opening them in a--ahem--sketchy competitor.  The hidden line here performs just like a shaded or wireframe mode.  Zero lag when panning or moving the camera, rendered instantly.  Dimensions are clean and I do not need to change any of the options (I almost always have to change options in the dimension styles .  The same model/imported DWG in formZ takes about 10 seconds to generate the HL, which I could live with if I was able to seamlessly move around the model.  But that's completely out of the question, the lag is unbearable.

I know HL was recently improved, and it is indeed better.  But compared to the rest of the pack it's still no where near up to par.

Create a formZ file with a few of your own textures.  Export the following with textures.

Export to 3DS: 3 versions of each texture
Export to FBX: 2 versions of each texture
Export to OBJ: 2 versions of each texture

This can really (unnecessarily) bloat a project folder when using higher res images.

Also, can the formZ logo stop exporting when it isn't in use (spoiler alert: it's never in use).

snow got a reaction from vva in Tool Simplification / Consistency
I would like to make the suggestion that some tools are removed/simplified/blended/given consistency.

There are a few tools that could use this treatment, but I recently took some time to look at the Extrusion, Reshape, Extend, and Thicken tools when applied to surfaces; all these tools essentially do the same thing, but with a few inconsistencies.

Let's say you have 30 separate square surfaces.  If you want to thicken/extrude/reshape/extend 20 of them, one would pre-pick these surfaces select a tool, then click on the screen to do them all at once.  The interesting thing here is that the RESHAPE tool and the EXTEND tool will unpick the surfaces while EXTRUSION and THICKEN will not.  Naturally, it took me 3 tries to figure this out after trying to use Reshape and Extend before using Extrusion.

It's also interesting that each of the Tool Options are slightly different, so it's not like you can just remove 2 of the tools and let the other tools do their jobs, there has to be some sort of simplification here.

Perhaps you can add all these abilities to one tool?  Let Reshape be given a fixed distance with In, Out, and Center, as well as dynamic, the ability to pre-pick, and also work on smooth objects?  I think that covers all ground for what this tool could do.

snow got a reaction from DarrylVet in offset segment not working with a BONUS snaps not working properly
there are some days where formZ is amazing, and other days where there are a ton of little things that do not work.  unfortunately, this is one THOSE days.

attached is a file of a shelf with some guides.  I want to use the OFFSET SEGMENT tool with extend to boundary and insert checked so I can build a 1" thick wall from the top surface.  this will not work.  the offset segment is disappearing into the model.  it will only work without the two tool options checked, but this isn't achieving my desired result.

SO then I'm like "okay, I'll just create a cube on that surface with insert on and I can snap to this guide where it interacts the model"

then formZ is like " lol good luck trying to snap to that intersection."

    COME ON.

the top surface is planar and strangely if you derive the top face, then the above processes work

snow reacted to Tech in form•Z 8.6 Update Released
We released v8.6.1 today. You can update you installation from the links below:.

Click here for formZ Student Edition.

    Highlights of enhancements in v8.6.1:
    • Enable Advanced OpenGL has been added to the OpenGL preferences (Edit->Preferences->OpenGL). This new option will enable the latest version of OpenGL available on your system. For many systems this will increase performance of the shaded and wireframe displays, however this option is not compatible with all graphics cards and drivers so it is off by default. On Mac OS, this option is only available for v10.10 or later.
    • Copy and paste of objects with materials assigned to faces now works as expected.
    • Repeat and continuous copy modes no longer display some objects in wireframe.
    • Copy/paste then undo/redo components now work properly.
    • Redo on any operation involving a component now maintains components properly.
    • Support for Windows 10 improved.
    • Certain Components with materials assigned to faces now work properly.
    • Clicking in the materials palette when using the large icon option now works properly when the palette is tall and narrow.
    • Undo files are more size efficient and less likely to become full and leave undo command dimmed.
    • Palettes positioned at the edge of the screen are no longer clamped to the screen edge when form•Z is restarted.
    • Dimensions and Notes now print at higher resolution.
    • The display resolution is now maintained when two wire objects are joined.
    • Changes to the animation options or tracks now refresh the shaded preview properly.
    • A warning is now issued if the scratch disk location (preferences->scratch Disk->custom) is not accessible as this can disable Undo/Redo.
    • Restoring 2-point perspective views in the view palette now works properly.
    • In certain project files, renaming of materials now works.
    • On Mac OS 10.13, the palettes no longer become semi-transparent and immobile when dragged from the palette dock on certain systems.
    • The Layout Title block section of the Project Settings now works properly.
    • Numerous stability and performance improvements.

snow reacted to pfschuyler in formZ needs a SketchUp Exporter
I've been asking for this for years. FormZ should have been the Sketchup of our world, years and years ago. But certain facts are routinely missed by whoever is driving that boat.

Even today, as you suggest... Having a useful Sketchup exporter would drive tons of advanced Sketchup users to model everything in FormZ. Then they'd probably document everything in Sketchup's layout because that would work great. Or they'd use the models for some other purpose in Sketchup's endlessly expanding and useful plugin ecosystem. Creating a seamless workflow for this would be a smart bet. Forget other modeling features for now. Focus on stability and workflow. That would increase the FormZ user base which would finance future modeling or layout developments. Yet, decade after decade, new modeling systems appear that quietly and confidently steal FormZ's user base. And FormZ remains a super innovative, but not so useful modeling system.

snow got a reaction from Kamorkaset in Reshape should not change texture maps
If you have an object with a custom texture map on it, then reshape it, it will change the texture map.  This should be fixed.

Using the Extend tool does not change the texture map so this is a nice workaround, but this should be consistent.

Attached is a file.  Try to reshape the back faces to make the wall art thinner.

snow got a reaction from Spacer in formZ folder in Documents...
needs to not be a thing.  There might be some users who actually use this for their organization, but I think the vast majority of users have their own system.  For example, I store everything on a server.

Not to mention, programs that automatically create folders on hard drives are extremely bothersome.  It makes one ponder "what else is this program putting on my computer without my knowledge" which is an unsettling thought.
(no, I don't think formZ does this, but when computer privacy is no longer a automatic guarantee these days, new users might frown on this action).

A solution here would be to let the user decide where to put autosave and texture files.

snow reacted to AsOne in Referenced CAD files
I would be amazing to have referenced CAD files in FormZ.  Similar to how texture maps works - they update automatically if the image source file is updated/changed.

To have a similar feature for CAD files would be great.  For my purposes it would be referenced DWG files.  This is a common feature of other CAD programs.

    For example:

I draw a floor plan in AutoCAD (or Vectorworks, or Draftsight, etc) and export a DWG file.  I import the DWG to FormZ with the option to make it a referenced file.
Then I make changes in AutoCAD, export as DWG again and the FormZ file is updated automatically.
The DWG import would need to be placed not the appropriate plane and be consistently relative to 0,0,0.
It would also be nice to have some control over the line settings upon import.  However, if there was an option to place the entire DWG on one Layer that would also do the trick as one can set layer overrides.

Currently I have to reimport DWG files over and over again to match up FormZ with my 2D counterparts (in my case from Vectorworks).

I have worked in (4) 3D apps and I find FZ's mapping to be the worst.
Yes, the cylinder map is sketchy at best.
The entire "decal" map thing need to be scrapped as well.
Having to go into that archaic little workspace, and then not being able to see the map until it's rendered is pitiful.

I find the texture mapping, in general, a little wonky.  When it works, it works well.  But when it doesn't work, it's really frustrating.

I have found that going between "Edit on Face" and "Edit in 3D" can have its perks as opposed to using just one option.  Also, turning off snaps can help with stubborn texture placement.

bbuxton unfortunately you are right. Sketchup and Rhino are the programs that people are using.

FormZ has a few great tools, best in industry definitely. Push n Pull tool on solids, offset tools with insert option, autogrid with lock option, fast drag n drop method with materials, robust extended tool and ability to copy paste topologies.

I love Rhino but in Rhino you have to use three or four commands to achieve the same than in FormZ. And the handling of materials is clumsy in Rhino.

Sketchup is a different story. Modelling method is annoying, but it is very fast and OpenGL mode is nice with bright colours, crisp shadows and clean lines. And you can export crips views to Illustrator. Now I have to export FZ models to SU if I need nice concept graphics or "toon" rendering.

Now Rhino is my main modelling program because you can link both FZ (step or dwg) and SU (native) files into it as blocks. And the main model will update constantly. The disadvantage is the poor material management in Rhino.

FormZ could easily do all the things mentioned above, but now there is too many bugs, bad export import plugins, UI problems and so on.

Lets hope FormZ 9 has new clean code, nice UI and robust import export plugins.

Agree, HL is very poor. Recently i downloaded Rhino 3D and the way the dimensions work and shows is just the way i think it should be. Don’t forget Vectorworks! That’s my reference program for how a line drawing with all kind of annotations should look like in a CAD output file.
