    Maxwell for formZ version 4.0.0.8 - OSX -Floating License Installation Instructions

    There were two issues with the installer that Next Limit created for v.4.0.0.8 which are resulting in a licensing issue. These will be corrected in the installation package soon, but until then, there is an easy fix, outlined below.

    Please note that node-locked and Windows versions of the software are not affected by this issue.

    On the computer that will be your license server:
    1. Download the Maxwell for formZ 4.0.0.8 disk image and mount.
    2. Drag "Maxwell" from the disk image to the /Plugins/ folder in your formZ installation, then eject the disk image.
    3. (Fix part 1) In /Plugins/Maxwell/ rename the folder "rlm" to "rlm_nl"
    4. Double-click on /Plugins/Maxwell/licenseactivator.app and activate your license in the normal manner. RLM will be installed during this process if it is not already on your system.
    5. (Fix part 2) Drag the file called maxwell_formz_floating.lic from the Maxwell folder in your user home directory (e.g., ~/Maxwell/ ) into Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses/
    6. Restart your computer and launch formZ. All should be ready to render!

    - Fixed texture interpolation was not working properly in some cases
    - Fixed potential crash reading old MXI files with embeded channels
    - Support for unicode (non ascii) characters improved
    - Fixed potential crash rendering scenes with disabled BSDFs
    - Fixed roughness channel
    - Fixed issues rendering instances of hidden objects

    MAXWELL CPU
    - Color multilight uses less memory now.
    - Fixed IES emitters were too dark when multilight was enabled.
    - Fixed maxwell.exe was unable to start GUI without NVIDIA driver installed in windows.
    - Token %multilight% added to output filename tokens available.

    NETWORK
    - Fixed issues with transferernce of MXIs from nodes to manager
    - Fixed issue sending preview images

    Hi dpwr,
     
    I know that Next Limit is studying GPU rendering on OSX through the thunderbolt interface, but it's not supported as of the writing.
     
    I will update this thread if this changes.

    Hi Andre,
    There may not be enough memory on the card to support the resolution you have set. Try rendering at a low resolution.

    Here's the Next Limit statement on macOS:
     
     
    Basically, powerful, contemporary, CUDA-enabled GPUs are required for this sort of work, and Apple is not producing machines that support such GPUs. However, I believe that Next Limit is researching a solution for users with old macs with Nvidia cards.
     
    I think what we have to bear in mind is, that if Apple were producing computers suitable for this type of work, they would be absolutely supported out of the box. Many of us long time mac users are disappointed by Apple's lack of attention to the professional line of computers over the last several years. As a mac user myself, my plan is to keep using my mac for modeling and everyday tasks, and going to begin using windows boxes with powerful CPU and GPU on the network for my rendering.

    Also, I think it is important to note that Next Limit has been working on GPU integration for several years. This is an extremely challenging technical work, especially as their goal is to provide an engine equal to the CPU engine, not a limited alternative.

    Re: Models commercially available as MXS files:
    Studio is a useful application, but it shouldn't be necessary for use with commercially available entourage that is delivered as MXS files. When using referenced MXSs, the plugin does not read the geometry in the MXSs or apply UVs. The plugin passes a simple file reference to the MXS, which is merged in at render time in Maxwell. And you can modify any Maxwell materials (MXMs) included with the download with the Maxwell Material Editor, which is included with the Maxwell 4 for formZ plugin.
     
    Re: Models commercially available in other formats:
    If formZ's OBJ / FBX importers work perfectly (the model looks correct when imported into formZ), then you should be able to export an accurate MXS version from formZ using the 'Create MXS' tool, and later use these as Maxwell references.

    You do not need Studio to set up referenced scenes (in this case, MXS entourage). This functionality is available through the Maxwell for formZ plugin directly.

    I purchased these for my client work and they work fine. I did change some settings on the MXMs they ship with - I thought the bark on the trees was a bit too colorful so I turned the saturation of the texture maps down a bit.

    Hi Dennis-
    I cannot speak for Renderzone, but Maxwell will use as many cores as you have, and performance scales almost linearly. Maxwell also uses hyperthreading effectively. So, the more cores and the faster they are, the better.
