    Next Limit is please to announce improved versions of both the Maxwell Render Suite and the Maxwell plugin for formZ. In addition to important fixes, this update offers a number of useful new features, including new, faster-rendering dynamically translated materials, a Roundover modifier which applies rounded edges only during rendering, animated Maxwell Seas, and a new "Ambient Field" light type for flooding interiors with soft, diffused light.

    Maxwell is the solution for startlingly photorealistic renders from your formZ models. Maxwell for formZ has been in continuous development since 2008— it’s mature, full-featured, and reliable.

    Existing customers may download the updated plugin and Maxwell Render Suite from the Next Limit Customer Gateway.

    I usually set up a 2D perspective views in the Fire window, and then save them in the views palette with a naming scheme to distinguish them, such as "Maxwell 2d - 1," "Maxwell 2d - 2" etc.

    There has been a public update to Maxwell 4 for formZ. Please log into the Maxwell Render customer portal, and download the latest version of Maxwell 4 for formZ: 4.0.1.1. It contains many important fixes, improved GPU rendering stability, and GPU rendering on OSX (Nvidia graphics card required).

    MAXWELL GPU
    • Fixed bad MXI file saved when engine is GPU and normals channel is enabled. MXI backward compatibility broken due to file format change. Older maxwell render are not able to open 4.0.1.1 MXI files.

    MAXWELL RENDER
    • CPU render engine performance improved about 10%. Now Maxwell 4 and Maxwell 3 has the same performance.

    There were two issues with the installer that Next Limit created for v.4.0.0.8 which are resulting in a licensing issue. These will be corrected in the installation package soon, but until then, there is an easy fix, outlined below.

    Please note that node-locked and Windows versions of the software are not affected by this issue.

    On the computer that will be your license server:
    1. Download the Maxwell for formZ 4.0.0.8 disk image and mount.
    2. Drag "Maxwell" from the disk image to the /Plugins/ folder in your formZ installation, then eject the disk image.
    3. (Fix part 1) In /Plugins/Maxwell/ rename the folder "rlm" to "rlm_nl"
    4. Double-click on /Plugins/Maxwell/licenseactivator.app and activate your license in the normal manner. RLM will be installed during this process if it is not already on your system.
    5. (Fix part 2) Drag the file called maxwell_formz_floating.lic from the Maxwell folder in your user home directory (e.g., ~/Maxwell/ ) into Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses/
    6. Restart your computer and launch formZ. All should be ready to render!

    This version of Maxwell provides a number of important fixes and support for GPU rendering on macOS.
     
    Nvidia graphics cards with CUDA support are required for GPU rendering. Nvidia's Maxwell and Pascal architectures (CUDA Compute Capability 5.0 and up) are officially supported by Next Limit. Previous micro-architectures are not recommended and may exhibit irregularities.
     
    macOS users must install the latest CUDA drivers before GPU rendering for the first time.

    - Improved BVH copy to GPU.
    - Fixed memory crash with disabled BSDFs.
    - Fixed crash when a coating is on a non active BSDF or when having a material with mixed active and non active BSDFs.
    - Fixed Z channel through clipmaps. Normals channel has bad values in areas with no geometry.
    - Fixed crash using default material in nogui mode.
    - Fixed crash in scenes with no emitters (i.e. sky dome).

    MAXWELL RENDER
    - Fixed MXI batch processing is exporting channels when user unchecks the option to export them (in some cases).
    - Fixed RGB numeric values displayed under mouse pointer (bottom status bar) have not gamma applied for bit-depth 8 and 16.
    - Fixed switching from GPU engine, channels does not work on RS1.
    - Software opengl DLL added to Windows installers. needed in some cases for old GPUs or remote desktops to show viewport.
    - Fixed HDR sky changed to physical sky if using ortho lens, and emitters not reflecting on other objects.

    Hello Maxwell 4 Users,

    New Maxwell plugins are available in the Next Limit Early Builds area!

    This version of Maxwell provides a number of important fixes.
     
    MAXWELL FOR FORMZ PLUGIN
    • Update to Maxwell 4.0.1.1 binaries
    • Reassigning material to objects while plugin Fire GPU is running no longer leads to crash
    • Copying objects while plugin Fire GPU is running now displays properly
     
    MAXWELL GPU
    • Fixed bad MXI file saved when engine is GPU and normals channel is enabled. MXI backward compatibility broken due to file format change. Older maxwell render are not able to open 4.0.1.1 MXI files.

    MAXWELL RENDER
    • CPU render engine performance improved about 10%. Now Maxwell 4 and Maxwell 3 has the same performance.

    There were two issues with the installer that Next Limit created for v.4.0.0.8 which are resulting in a licensing issue. These will be corrected in the installation package soon, but until then, there is an easy fix, outlined below.

    Please note that node-locked and Windows versions of the software are not affected by this issue.

    On the computer that will be your license server:
    1. Download the Maxwell for formZ 4.0.0.8 disk image and mount.
    2. Drag "Maxwell" from the disk image to the /Plugins/ folder in your formZ installation, then eject the disk image.
    3. (Fix part 1) In /Plugins/Maxwell/ rename the folder "rlm" to "rlm_nl"
    4. Double-click on /Plugins/Maxwell/licenseactivator.app and activate your license in the normal manner. RLM will be installed during this process if it is not already on your system.
    5. (Fix part 2) Drag the file called maxwell_formz_floating.lic from the Maxwell folder in your user home directory (e.g., ~/Maxwell/ ) into Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses/
    6. Restart your computer and launch formZ. All should be ready to render!

    Some clarification from Next Limit:
     
     
    Also, I think it is important to note that Next Limit has been working on GPU integration for several years. This is an extremely challenging technical work, especially as their goal is to provide an engine equal to the CPU engine, not a limited alternative.
