    Collision detect

Collision detection is useful for example where copies of an object have been made and something has inadvertently been left over the top of another, increasing the quantity count from that which had been intended when a bill of materials is produced.

    Which universities?

Apparently California State Polytechnic used to but now their tutor Evan teaches directly through his business Method Digital Training. Probably a lot less expensive using his and Autodessys own support than learning at a uni. https://getmethod.com/blog/formz-fundamentals Meanwhile I hope the world will soon get to appreciate how far FormZ has advanced over the last few years and that it will gain the respect it deserves.
  3. Many, many times I have put up with arrows being less than optimally displayed for small distances, but usually diagrams are for my own use so I don't waste time on the 'problem'. Presumably you have set up a few different dimension styles you can use so you have a range of sizes available. If you need to manually edit the positions of the arrows you may get the effect you want with the explode dimension tool, but depending on your choice of font, all your dimensions may then require exploding and applying a black material to them to show consistency. If the size of the dimensions are set to display according to 'screen' in the dimension properties, they will change direction according to factor of zoomed view, but in my experience too, they do not seem to flip at the ideal time especially if they are quite large.

Attach object to plane or grid

I have a 100mm cube as a hidden object in my template file situated from -100,100,-100 to 0,0,0 so it is easy at any time to unhide it and start a new rectangle or cuboid from 0,0,0 as a temporary object from it's location to first move and rotate if required, and consequently use to snap other objects to. Perhaps there is an easier way, but snapping to other objects is how I accurately position objects or groups of objects.

    Layout Bugs and Quirks

Yes please....and just to make sure the last used setting sticks, ie object name, rather than defaulting back to measurement for the next leader.

    Layout Bugs and Quirks

Hi Tech, Hmm, is that really of any more advantage than what we already have in the objects palette, where, selected objects have a nice clear red tick against them? I'm looking for a situation where parts can be labelled and the view can be printed to pdf so a manufacturer can visually see the parts with their names against them. We can capture a window with the part names showing in the object palette, or in an info management window, but it is guesswork as to which part refers to which highlighted object unless only one object is selected at a time. Or were you meaning the names would be shown in the project window exactly over the top of the selected parts. That would be good for identification, although it could obstruct the view of the part, but if we printed or captured 2 versions of the view, one with and one without the 'show object name in project window', that could certainly be a solution if the text is not too crammed together with overlaps etc. Is it not easier for you to add the object name option to the leader-line tool, to begin with and hopefully develop a full featured labelling tool in the future?

    Layout Bugs and Quirks

Tech, sorry, no, it's just too time consuming to name many parts individually again, I would rather number the parts using other software which has more advanced text and annotation capability than type each object name into Layout's leader line tool. If leader line is intelligent enough to indicate line length or face area, I would have thought it could also indicate object name without needing to type it. In practice, as manufacturers, what we do is either keep the model open on the laptop for referencing parts (where available if the maker has access to and understanding of FZ) and describe parts quite carefully so most are identifiable simply by their description and size, and keep groups of assemblies fairly small so as not to make them too complicated with too many parts, but we could increase the group size and reduce number of grouped assemblies and nested groups if we had balloon labelling preferably as a stand alone feature, which would label all selected parts, with ability to afterwards drag the names and 'leader line' positions individually for bespoke placement.

    Layout Bugs and Quirks

Tech, I'm glad that the issues concerning Layout are fading away gradually. I did try Layout well over a year ago and crashes and slowness terminated my perseverance. The carrot I need to give it another try would be automated balloon label part naming / numbering, preferably within FormZ itself and which could also be used in Layout. Even manual labelling with something like the leader dimension tool would be progress.

Viewer support for object name property.

Thanks Marcelo. I will look further into this when I get time over next few days, so from what you say, sounds like the object name gets into the dwg file but is not picked up by the viewer. Maybe worth exploring other viewers, or viewer settings.
  13. Has anyone had success with any viewer to display object name properties? Ideally, I want one which can be viewed on an Android tablet. Have tried Autodesk's Autocad 360 viewer for FZ exported as dwg. Also Autodesk's Fusion, which was very good but still no FZ object names. Tried opening the file exported as obj which opened in Fusion, but not as well as dwg. Is it that FZ is not exporting the object name info into other file formats, or that the viewer apps do not support the information exported? My primary purpose of using a viewing app is for part identification when relating to the cutlist. If when the part is selected it does not display its name, this is lame imho. I've not got my ipad with me at the moment to see if the FormZ app supports it. From memory, I don't think it did either. And while on the subject of part identification, wouldn't automatic object balloon labels be a great addition to FZ. Even manual labelling would be a start, maybe as an alternative to the dimensions in leader lines, but a new tool would be better. Has been mentioned before.

Viewer support for object name property.

Hi Tech, Thank you, it would be great if objects can be selected to obtain their properties, especially object name in future. I agree scenes are useful, however when we are manufacturing, we sometimes need to identify an object spontaneously, which is possible in the full program but not the viewer. As we use Android tablets mostly, Autodesk Fusion works well as a viewer for us, but when we use export, does FZ export the object properties, and especially the object name to be available in a third party viewer or program if that viewer or program has the receptor to use the info offered? If not, might you consider including object name in export in future please? I also hope object name labelling will become available as an alternative efficient method to visually identify object identities without opening the model.
  15. I just updated my graphics driver from previous version and restarted the laptop. 5 minutes later a message popped up (never seen it before) to say temperature thresholds had been exceeded. I was using FormZ at the time but not doing any rendering or anything intensive at all, working in shaded display orthogonal views and Chrome in the background. Luckily I had made a manual system restore point before I updated so I immediately restored my computer back to previous driver. Dell Precision M6700 17inch laptop. Windows 7 pro. Radeon HD7800M

    form•Z 8.5.7 Update Released

After updating there were no palettes displayed. This is no problem really because after switching the ones on which I like to display from the palette menu my preferred positions had actually been preserved - pretty much, I just moved them a fraction, mainly downwards. I saved as a precaution and the setting is preserved upon reopening. I have quite a customised palette arrangement. Windows 7pro. 17inch Dell M6700 laptop.

Text display in hidden line render

Thanks Tech, I appreciate the good news. In the meantime, while still eager for the correction, I am getting acceptable results by the following method: As I make furniture construction diagrams from 3d model, to increase the definition of the (temporary) dimension text, I increase the top of what needs to be shown to full screen width, and begin a scrolling capture using Snagit. By scrolling down the window in FZ until all of the height of the diagram has been captured with Snagit, the result is good enough for use. I make as many of these as required before printing as a multi-page pdf document. I'm not at all concerned with varying scales of diagrams as long as dimensions are on them, because each diagram is arranged as an A4 size page, but in practice becomes a full screen on a 10 inch tablet so the method is efficient for our purposes.
  22. I often need to produce drawings from a model using dashed lines to show hidden lines of objects. Wire frame is nice and clear but no simply produced hidden lines. It's possible to get clear text for wire frame display which sadly does not have a hidden line option, but if using hidden line render display, the dimension font changes and is not of a presentable quality, appearing jagged and of varying boldness on (my) 17" monitor screen. I want to create one-time dimensioned illustrations to screen-capture before deleting the dimensions rather than use Layout which would take more time and energy. I hope rendering of dimension text improves with the next version of FZ. My preferred font for dimensions is called Patrick Hand because it is one of the few where all characters are unique, for example, 606 doesn't look like an upside-down 909 or, as with some fonts, 100101 look like an upside-down 101001 or get confused with an adjacent small case L or capital i etc. which can be important occasionally. Patrick Hand certainly doesn't get recognised by hidden line render on my computer, and gets converted to some other font which is not displayed clearly and consistently on the monitor. Ideally I'd like to see the font definition improved in hidden line render. Is there a simple work around to get the drawings presentable? Attached, hidden line render, variable quality.

    Axial sweep

Is it possible please to get this profile to sweep along this path to produce a solid instead of hollow object? 2 versions of path attached, one is smooth, the other faceted. Both produce hollow object when Axial Swept.
