    Information Management bug

I know what you mean, but export to csv works and you can print that result.

formZ 9 and Drafting? And Windows 10?

I don't personally give 2 hoots about visual styling, as long as it is effective, user adjustable, with plenty of real estate to work in. And it would be nice if Layout is completely a tool fit for the purpose. Getting work done quickly is what matters to me. Time spent on visual styling is time which could have been spent more usefully imho. Clarity and economy of space with user adjustments which reliably stick please. XP, 7, 8, 10... does it matter?

    Materials from materials library

Hi Bartjuan, Thanks for your discovery: 'I have found that if I drag and drop a material form the predefined library to an EMPTY SPOT on the material palatte it will add it to the palatte with the correct name.' That's really great. I agree what you additionally suggest would be useful, but at least the former can be done, thanks so much for posting.
  4. I used to have a lot of materials in my template file but am trying to keep starting file down to a minimum size. I have all my materials available in various material library files and of course am able to copy their parameters to any new material but I also want the names in the library to jump across to the new material because it is tedious to type in the material name when the average project might have up to a dozen materials. If this is not possible I suppose I will need to include a small core of my library materials inside the template file after all, or use another model file which contains my most common materials to copy, from, paste into my model file, delete the object immediately, which brings the material in, but again this is an overly cumbersome method to perform regularly so hope I have missed a simpler solution.

V-Ray for form•Z Beta now available!

Thanks Tech. As I've said before, as I only need to render occasionally, I would like to activate the V-Ray side of things only when I need to, and not connect with V-Ray on the 95% other occasions I am using FZ. Otherwise I may decide not to buy the V-Ray plugin, and take the route instead of exporting my file, opening in eg. Blender and use a Render Farm which supports the Blender V-Ray plugin for the few occasions I require it.
  6. Yes, mirror copies of nested groups and components are something I try to avoid as tend to be unreliable in FZ. If you need to do an operation like that while in edit group, I find it best to copy or cut the objects, paste them into a new drawing, perform your operations in the new drawing them copy and paste the result into the original working model.

V-Ray for form•Z Beta now available!

I seriously want to only connect to V-Ray on the occasions I actually intend to use it. Now I have delays closing as well as opening FormZ. Sadly, I'm removing the V-Ray plugin until 'licensing' delays are resolved.

    Materials from materials library

Thanks Andrew, that is interesting, but I think it is something else. What I would ideally like is to have a template file with very few materials, and during the build of a model which started from the template, to be able to drag materials into the model's material palette from one of my materials libraries. We are currently only able to do the opposite afaik. For example, if I open my materials library and drag a material from it onto an object, nothing happens. If I create a new material in the materials palette it might say 'material 17' I can find a material in my library and drag it onto the 'material 17' but it will still be called 'material 17' instead of adopting the name of the material in my library. That is the problem.

V-Ray for form•Z Beta now available!

Thanks ingoerik, that is a little bit reassuring, however, 8.57 and 8.6 isn't the same as 2 copies of 8.6. Surprised you don't use libraries though. I find my component libraries indispensable (but I do not retain them as components in my models).

V-Ray for form•Z Beta now available!

Hi vva, Thank you for that information, I didn't know this; however, if I am prepared to go to the effort of installing a second copy of FZ on my same computer, will this introduce confusion either to myself or the program with regard to where it/they look for preference files, libraries, most recent files etc?, and will this increase the occasions where I cannot use the program at all being locked out due to a 'too many computers' trigger, which has already been a problem due to working on 2 machines and at least 2 locations but never simultaneously? Although I appreciate the information, I think what you suggest could open a can of worms.

V-Ray for form•Z Beta now available!

I am not happy that FormZ 8.6 pro can take a lot longer to open than 8.5 Perhaps it is because I use my laptop in different wifi locations, like my home and work. The lag seems to be while there is a message displayed about V-Ray license server. Even more concerning, what if it fails, is that putting us at risk of not using FormZ if it is unable to do what it needs to with the V-Ray licence server? I get the impression V-Ray are more concerned about protecting themselves than they are about us getting our work done. I would like 8.6 and all future versions to have an option in preferences where the program does not log into the V-Ray server until we hit the V-Ray button. Why do V-Ray need to know how often we use Form-Z anyway? Surely all they need to do is protect themselves from V-Ray actually being used without legitimacy, not the whole of Form-Z as well. At least 95% of my work does not involve high quality rendering. Shaded Full is adequate for most of my work anyway and is almost instantaneous.

    FormZ for Linux

Justin, "Holding on to 7 is only going to hurt you in the long run..." I am unconvinced. I am very satisfied with my workflow at the moment with a wonderful combination of programs working together on Windows 7. I can easily see myself maintaining that just as it is in a VM for many years to come. I met an architect 5 years ago who was perfectly happy with his 10 year old or more version of Autocad, he had found a comfortable work flow. Many companies have workflows which utilise old well designed programs, hence so much continued use of Windows XP. A lot of 'progress' is driven by the need to sell things and generate income rather than improve a system which already works great. Often when things are redesigned there is some loss as well as gain. I am comfortable and although looking forward to FZ v9 I may reach a point where I wish to settle in a virtualised setup for quite some time. There may be a point well into the future when I will want to move to new horizons, but that will be my decision, not being pushed along against my will by the likes of Microsoft. Have you used Virtual Box? I find that running an older system guest on a newer operating system host and newer hardware has some advantages and tends to work more smoothly and faster than it did on the original native system.

V-Ray for form•Z Beta now available!

Thank you, that is useful to know. Is that a perpetual license or annual subscription? What will happen with Lightworks Renderzone? Will that continue to be updated and upgraded as a FormZ plugin or is that going to have support terminated or left to tread water at it's current level? Do you see V-Ray as being a replacement for Renderzone, or for Maxwell or an additional option? As a subscriber to Family Plan pro with Renderzone, which would normally include periodical updates, I am wondering how the pricing will be determined for members especially as they are offered discounts for new plugins. I can see some benefits to V-Ray, but due to significant cost it might be time to compare it with Maxwell or even consider how great the need is for it.

    Layout: Frame parameters - Frame.

Thanks Setz. No, I tried that already. The frame is not like a normal object, although it can be selected, there are no attributes or info for that particular selection, though I wish there were.
  15. Is it possible to hide the frame, or lock it so it is not selectable or snappable? I can choose not to display it when printed, but it appears to be always visible and in the way and vulnerable to change while working in it. Unclicking border is not a solution, that refers to another 'frame' around the one I wish to hide or at least lock and have options to resist snaps. I am experimenting to use Layout 8.57 build 9929 on windows.

Thank you. This explanation is what has been required for those of us who were unacquainted with them.

First impressions very good. Very nice slider controls to alter the colour correction, exposure, contrast etc after the render. How do we alter the size of the rendering window please?

    Feature request: Select clones

If there is anything beyond obvious regarding clones please could we have some documentation about what they are and how to use them including any limitations, or actions which turn them into a normal object.

    FormZ for Linux

I have had a quick response from the developer of the other program I am committed to and they will not be developing a Linux version. So I am committed to Windows. But eventually, after Jan 14th 2020, unless support from Microsoft is extended for Windows 7, I may consider a Linux PC to host Virtualbox with Windows 7 guest, hope Windows 7 is supported by FormZ and also the other software for many years and if/when it ceases, stand still long-term with such a setup but I really do hope for long-term Windows 7 compatibility.

    FormZ for Linux

It's been a year since the last post and FormZ is much more stable, 8.6wip has been released, developer focus is on V9. Windows 10 is continuing to be ignored by many businesses using Windows and consensus is that Windows 7 was the best ever version and that Windows 10 has privacy issues and who knows what subscription may cost in future. Unfamiliar UI and uncertainty about the future. "According to NetMarketShare’s August 2017 data, 48.43% are still using Windows 7 – compared to the 27.99% who have moved on to the latest operating system, Windows 10." Apple continues in strength but requires serious investment as hardware is expensive. Linux is increasing in strength and the future is looking bright. Will there indeed be Linux support in the future for FormZ? It would be great if there is by January 14 2020 when extended support for Windows 7 officially ends. I think FormZ may be one of only two programs I really need anymore which cannot be accessed on Linux. I expect alternative programs exist for anything else I have to do.
  21. I cannot register and do not know how to set extra user permissions. 'The number of computers exceeded etc' Windows 7 64bit. I am already logged into Windows with administrator priviledges.
  22. +1 - more collapsible controls, great! ......and related to this, let us not forget we are still waiting to see 'material by list view' in 'select by criteria - attribute - material' Collapsible material group controls would be good there too both in list view and thumbnail view.

There is a whole forum dedicated to FZ suggestions. Maybe this topic could be moved across before this thread becomes any larger.

    Top Ten FormZ 9 list

Sure, I can sympathise, that must be frustrating if a tool which you relied upon is no longer available.

    Top Ten FormZ 9 list

No. It is imperative that we do not rush into this. Buggy software is not a joy. 8.5.7 is pretty stable. Give Autodessys time to get version 9 right before it is released. We know they are currently working on early builds, it is happening so let's be patient.
