    Dimensions

I have mentioned before about this problem, but as it slows my workflow so much, here attached is a video explaining how it seems in some cases to be impossible to dimension some simple 3d objects in many situations in 3d. A simple fix could be if segment dimensioning could be disabled so snaps can concentrate on positions like vertices or mid points of edges when required. In the video I am trying to dimension the width of a door but all FormZ is interested in doing is dimensioning segments which are not relevant to this task. It would be easier if the view was orthogonal, of course, but that is not always what is required. http://screencast.com/t/aqKS3ulrj In the second video, http://screencast.com/t/WROwYNDjhevz I am dimensioning easily and quickly with another 3d software program which uses active keystroke snapping instead of mouse clicks to a vertex or midpoint [among others also available]. We really need this efficiency please, or at least to disable segment bias. I find it incredulous that what seems to me as a serious weakness has not been addressed in a program which has been around so many years. Please improve dimensioning in 3d very soon so we can snap wherever we want to quickly and accurately.

    Form Z not responding

Thanks Tech, what you say about one malware software confirms what my tech guy said. Already, I am noticing Form Z running quickly and smoothly having made these 2 changes to my system, thanks for persevering with me through my groaning, I am hugely relieved these problems I've been experiencing have not been Form Z related or not really even Windows related come to that.

    Form Z not responding

FormZ 8.01 hangs far too regularly upon exit of edit group. I'm only in shaded work display. I could perhaps understand if the work was intensive, but usually all very simple straight rectangular 3d work with no booleans [unless push-pull reshaping and extending is considered to be boolean] and certainly not graphic intensive. I am no expert but it feels to me like a small amount of computer RAM is dedicated to a group and despite plenty of RAM being available, it is not accessible while working inside the group....could this be correct, and more importantly, rectified please? The same thing used to happen with groups in another CAD program I used to use, but did not happen with blocks. Coincidence or related? Windows 7 64bit.

    Form Z not responding

Tech, this is very kind of you, but already my computer is a whole lot sweeter. I have a good feeling about this now, having removed Malwarebytes which was kicking up so many windows errors, and especially now the FZ file I am working on has been moved onto my Solid State Disk drive. It is running really quietly now, no fan or hard disk to spin. I feel somewhat foolish for not thinking of this before. Maybe moral of the story is if you have an SSD, only use conventional disks for storage so the operating system and program run together on the fast SSD.

    Form Z not responding

Thanks Tech, it seems that my system has issues. You have kindly looked at my files in the past and I don't want to waste your time as I can't think of anything special about the file that could cause a problem. I'll send it anyway though, together with recent dump file and crash details. I am taking measures to clear my system as much as possible, simplifying security devices and putting my working file onto the SSD which the Windows 7 operating system is on, instead of second hard disk, hoping it will perform better afterwards.

    Dimensions

Thanks, Tech, I can see what you mean about not getting close enough to the points, but when I got close segment dimensioning became active. You are right, I just tried again and whether the view was different or something else, it is now working much better and not over biased by segment dimensioning this time. I think my system plays up as it was heading for FormZ not responding which I posted about later so maybe it is a sign to me of trouble ahead. Still a fact though that my system has more issues with this program than others I use which I expect are less intensive on resources. A conflict maybe.

    Opening Large FormZ 8 File

Leonidas, sorry to hear this, I feel your pain. I hope someone else has a solution for this immediate problem of yours. Maybe an auto save file will be found on your system to save some of your loss, it should be turned on if you haven't disabled it? I have only been using FormZ about a year so still on the learning curve, but on my Windows system, which has moderate processor, graphics card but lots of RAM, it is more prone to instability [crashes or 'Form Z is not responding'] than any other program I have used, and I rely strongly on regular 'save as' new file. I highly recommend the new free plugin from FormZ Lab: 'Save with incremental file name'. If all else fails, you can use this lesson as a safeguard for the future.
  8. Agree, ongoing problem, even with single screen! See attached how all saved and how it re-opens. Save workspace on exit is 'supposed to be' active. This is just one example scenario, as it varies from time to time. Constant chore to rearrange. I wonder if the pick popup palette is at fault as it often pops open of its own accord upon opening, and has done so through versions 7, 8beta, 8 and this latest 8.0.1
  9. Thanks Lab, that was quick. The updated version works a charm.
  10. I'm getting zd followed by zd1, and then zdzd and then zdzd1 added instead of sequencial numbers on this Windows 64bit system. For example sequences 141208dV8MorningRoomCupboardszd.fmz 141208dV8MorningRoomCupboardszd1.fmz 141208dV8MorningRoomCupboardszdzd.fmz and sequences 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards01.fmz 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards0zd.fmz 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards0zd1.fmz 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards0zdzd.fmz The next is likely to follow the following pattern: 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards0zdzd1.fmz 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards0zdzdzd.fmz 141208eV8MorningRoomCupboards0zdzdzd1.fmz and sequences 141208g.v8.01.fmz 141208g.v8.0zd.fmz 141208g.v8.0zd1.fmz 141208g.v8.0zdzd.fmz 141208g.v8.0zdzd1.fmz Seems to be an error. Seems to be an error.

    Fmz8 Imager

Thanks Dennis, but I cannot find enough information about Imager, or is it the pet name for what the manual calls Network Rendering, as there is a reference in that chapter to 'the imager window'?
  12. Alan Cooper

    Fmz8 Imager

Sorry Dennis, I am unfamiliar with Imager.

    Fmz8 Imager

Dennis, I find that with FZ8 all the FZ8 resources seem to go into the rendering.

    Copy Paste From V6

I thought it would be very unlikely, but seeing that it is the weekend and you will need to wait till Monday for reply from Tech, I tried to do this with a simple object from V7 to V8 as it was a very quick experiment to perform. It did not work either. So it looks like you need to save a copy of your v6 file, open it in v8 and copy the items you select from there? Both files can be alternately accessible from the Window menu in V8 so you should be able to perform your task that way. IMHO I would be surprised if Autodessys would think this probably rare request worthy of a script.
  15. Lab, I have just tried RENAME OBJECTS in the Manager Collection. It is very good indeed, better than expected. The palette window takes up a lot of area [could it be resized in the future? but is only active for a short time and great that it can already be called with a customised keyboard shortcut, so better really as it is - that it doesn't remain open after use. Thank you very much!
  16. Thanks Lab, you guys at Autodessys are brilliant. Thanks for listening, I look forward to using it very soon. Alan.

    Searching The Old Forum

Tech, I appreciate what you are saying, but it may be worth considering whether there may be a few forum members may be prepared to volunteer to take on as much of the effort as possible. It could be managed inexpensively on something like box.com where any forum members could have access to view and a select few the permissions to edit. Ultimate ownership of the document by yourself. An idea to consider perhaps? I think it would be helpful from all angles.

    Searching The Old Forum

Thanks Tech, Any chance of that database being made a bit more public and presented in such a way we can cast votes and that they can get ticked off so we realise and start to use the added features please? Wouldn't it also be nice if we can receive an automated email 'the feature or fix you liked "......." is now available in the latest update.'

    Searching The Old Forum

Sadly, even following this advice, searching the old forum can be ineffective according to my own attempts. A big information resource has been severely crippled. I just hope Autodessys pulled out all the valuable suggestions, especially the promises for issues where they have said: 'we will get this fixed'.
  21. R2D2 I think it is expected that extend to face of a group would not be possible, since you cannot select a face of an object while it is part of a group, unless unlock groups is active, and I find using version 7 extend to face in an unlocked group does work. Sorry, no comment about the second aspect to your post.

    Keyboard input

Accurate numerical input is better but still a bit random for me since my computer techician has done a few checks on my computer and made a few tweaks. Today I tried to resize [push-pull] a simple rectangular shape to increase height by 10(mm) and the first couple of attempts increase was just 1mm I don't think it was an issue of not pressing hard enough on the zero before quickly pressing on enter. I tried a few more times and worked correctly. Checked tooltip, which was set to 1second delay. Changed to 5seconds, tested again, worked correctly. Changed tooltip to zero seconds [which would be my preference], still worked correctly. Mystery, so will need to be careful and check the value in the input palette before hitting enter. Incedentally, yesterday I removed Zemana anti key-logger because the technician felt it was overkill security for my system, as well as Trusteer Rapport as in his opinion it is bloated. Both these programs can mess with keyboard input. I was also told that programs vary in the way they manage memory and some can cause heavy memory fragmentation after using for a while, even if a lot of memory is installed. Perhaps FormZ is one of those programs.
  23. If object renamer plugin needs to be rewritten for FZ8 please could it be available as a palette which does not close after each use because when re-naming objects in bulk, which is partly what the plugin is good for, it would be nice not to need to keep getting it from the plugins menu for every single use. (I generally do modelling first and name the objects at one time at the end.)
  24. This is an observation. FormZ 7. Trying to move a turned furniture knob component from one position to another. The knob has a lot of topography and despite being a simple, 3mb file, FormZ struggles to cope, with a repetitive cycle of screen flashes, lots of fan noise and temporary 'FormZ is not working' in Task Manager [Windows]. It turns out quite a lot of snaps were active, if I just use one snap mode at a time, it enables FormZ to cope, concentrating on just the part of the topography needed. Maybe obvious to some, but it took me a while to recognise the cause of the severe slow-down, and it can be even worse when autosave activates.

    Keyboard input

I get this too, much more on one of my laptops [an Acer] than the other [an HP] and depends upon delay and speed of keystroke input so think it could be machine specific. Next week a computer expert is going to check out this and some other issues as I suspect something else on the computer is interrupting what the FormZ program is trying to do.
