    Lasso selection

Hi - thanks for the suggestion but my real question now is "Why 2 tools to do the same job ?" This all used to be one tool and I'm at a loss to figure out why I need more than one ? I can't find the logic. Cheers - Rod

    Lasso selection

Thank you very much. I think my problem is that in earlier versions it was easier to find - can't really see the point of separating it from the main pick tool. Is there some kind of logical reason ? Anyway - thank you - Rod

    Lasso selection

I've probably asked this question before but I've not been able to find it in 7.3.4 manual or anywhere else - Can somebody please remind me how I get a Lasso selection in this version ? Cheers Rod

    Place along path

So now it's happening again. After functioning fine with both Distance and Number I needed to use the same profile to place along a different path and it now insists on changing my 1.000 m to 0.0126 m - repeatedly - even after I quit, open the file again to find the 1.000 setting has remained ... and then it changes it again the moment I try to use the tool. I'm going to have to give up and do it manually. I can't waste any more time. Cheers, Rod

    Place along path

For some mad reason when I opened the file and tried it one more time it worked properly ! I had tried it over and over again before posting my question on here. But there remains one very odd thing - after carrying out the operation NOTHING works properly. Items are showing in the view when they are clearly switched off - nothing can be selected. The only remedy is to save the file and Quit FormZ - then re-open the file. Everything then appears Hunky-Dory. But at least I can now move on. Cheers, Rod

    Place along path

Hi - can anyone tell me please why the Place along Path tool just doesn't seem to function ? If I use "By Distance" and enter 1 m it arbitrarily uses something like 53.486 m ! If I use number of copies and put in 515 it arbitrarily uses 15 ! Have I missed something ? What am I doing wrong ? Am using 7.3.4 on Mountain Lion. Thanks in anticipation ! Cheers Rod

    srange selection behaviour

Thanks for offerings everybody. Snow - I am using 7.3.4 so if the issue was dealt with in 8 then I suppose I have to put up with it unless I can justify upgrade to 8. I will ask FormZ support to confirm. Thanks. Asone - Thanks for pointing me to the Selection Preview setting in the Edit menu. Don't know why I never found it myself. Setz - thanks for the colour setting suggestion but I have now disabled rollover and am feeling very happy indeed !
  8. Hi - I'm using FormZ 7.3.4 on Mountain Lion. Can anyone please tell me how I can turn off the really annoying feature of the interface that is constantly doing rollover highlighting ? I frequently find that it can be confusing as to whether an object is actually selected or just being rolled over or assuming that it is just a rollover and finding that it is actually an unwanted part of a selection. While I'm on the subject of selection can anyone tell me how I can stop the selection being lost simply by changing to a different window of a 4-screen view ? Also on selection issues - when changing the nudge value it is impossible to use it until the selection is deselected and then re-selected again. Even just opening the nudge dialogue to check the current value will prevent it being applied to any selection until it is deselected and re-selected again. I am so familiar with this stuff that it is not actually crucial but the illogical behaviour is driving me potty ! Hope someone can improve my chances of staying sane please !! Cheers Rod
  9. Can anyone please tell me why I can't just see the points on visible objects but instead get a whole scramble of other random points showing as well ? It's driving me mad - I can't remember ever having this problem in previous versions. Thanks - Rod

    Displacement map tool

Thanks Des ! Really not panicing ... 'cos I know the answer is 42. And thanks Tech - I have actually download the trial before and tried it briefly because I was having an export to FACT problem. The interesting thing I discovered with that was that when I continued with my current version the FACT scrambles I was getting before seemed to have gone away and I now get useable FACTs ! That's very wierd and I don't understand it at all but I'm happy to accept luck when it happens. I'm afraid I can't really contemplate upgrading again as I no longer have the continuous revenue earning workflow that might justify it. But thank you all for help and suggestions and comments. Cheers Rod

    Creating faceted objects ?

By the way - thanks for your suggestions Setz. I'm afraid the tool options you have shown must be from a later version than 7.3.4. I don't recognise them . I've attached what I get offered which unfortunately is not exactly intuitive ! Cheers Rod

    Creating faceted objects ?

Hi - thanks all for your replies and thanks "Staff" ! for your offering. Thanks for the maths lesson ... I needed that ! I will certainly investigate the Polygon Mesh tool - thank you - am not familiar with that. What I would like to be able to do is work in the fluid way I got used to - starting with Medusa on a Prime computer in 1981 and working through various modelling and rendering systems including Renderman ... etc, etc. The crucial thing I had to be aware of with animation was not to build models that were so polygon heavy that rendering each frame took forever. Although you may think that this is no longer an issue these days I'm afraid an old fart is still here to tell you that it really does matter. Being able to precisely control the level of detail needed for a particular large environment is still absolutely crucial when intending to render thousands of HD frames. Unless of course you happen to be Disney or Dreamworks ! Anyway - I'm not actually complaining about anything - just trying to use what is still a great tool in a way that suits my method of working and project requirements. Ideally a preferences project setting that allowed a choice of working in a "smooth" or "faceted" world would seem ideal to me. But that seems to have been discarded. Anyway - thanks for all offerings - there's always a solution ... just often takes a lot of head-banging and trial and error to discover it. Cheers Rod

    Displacement map tool

OK - thanks all for your responses - I am assuming that my problems must all therefore be down to the version I am using. When I'm finally clear of the current project I will try to return to this subject and post some examples on here but it sounds as if that is probably a waste of time as most users will be on later versions I guess. I only really posted this in case anyone else might stumble across the same behaviour and the voodoo could possibly save them some time. Cheers Rod

    Displacement map tool

Just thought I would flag this up in case anybody else encounters the same situation while using the displacement tool. I am using 7.3.4 so this may have changed in later versions. I have used this tool many times in earlier versions and it has proved extremely useful to me particularly when the contour tool starts delivering terrain models with multiple lines of straight sharp ridges where there shouldn't be any. So I was rather thrown a few days ago when I needed to create a couple of ditches and a pond in a large flat area of grass. Simple I thought - a couple of fine black lines stroked along spline paths in AfterEffects and a feathered shape for the pond. The puzzle started when I found that this produced absolutely nothing on a flat rectangle. Must be something to do with the numbers I thought ... and proceeded to spend hours and hours trying as many different combinations of Max segment lengths, numbers of sub-divisions, smoothing level, min and max heights, threshold, etc. Nothing. So I tried playing around with the image map - thickness of the lines, feather edge on the pond shape, blurring of the line edges, etc, etc ... Nothing. At this juncture I sent a simple object in a FormZ model file with an example of the image map to FormZ support asking for help in cracking why I was getting nothing at all. I got no answer, but by sheer chance I decided to convert the .psd I had been using to greyscale .jpg. Eureka ! - I thought this was the answer and sent a quick note to support to update although I could have sworn photoshop RGB files had worked for me before. But of course the result I got at this first time I got something was never going to be absolutely right so I went back and regenerated the image with adjustments. Nothing. So another day went by as I banged my head against a brick wall. To cut a VERY long story shorter by sheer chance and under extreme frustration I selected CYLINDRICAL mapping ... and then FLAT mapping again ... and hey presto this voodoo worked like magic ! So from here on I regularly had to repeat this bit of voodoo whenever the system decided to deliver nothing at all. Unfortunately in the end it was anyway incapable of producing the refinements I needed as it seemed to need increasing values of smoothing the thinner the ditch lines became ... and then ignored a whole quadrant of the map with an identical line thickness to the rest of it ... until the smoothing was again increased - making things very blunt and far too chunky. Even tried using the same numbers on a rectangle 4 times larger and reducing it down but that didn't work either. But the main message I have to offer is the voodoo mentioned above in case anyone encounters a similar situation themselves - maybe they can avoid the HUGE amount of wasted time. All the best, Rod

    Creating faceted objects ?

Well I've been playing arund trying to make this work for me ... but as always there are multiple catches 22 ! Create a cylinder with exactly the number of segments around the circle as I want - great ... just like it used to be ! Then rounded the ends... great- no problems. Selected all the points at one end to drag them to a new cylinder length ... but ... er ... the points WONT MOVE ! I then query the object to find that what had been an excellent faceted object was now somehow magically a SMOOTH object again ... or at least partially it seems. I can see the points, I can select them ... I just cant do anything with them. So I merrily convert the object back to faceted ... only to find that HUNDREDS of points are created in the rounded zones ... about 30 or so for every rounded curve corresponding with the cylinder segments. But I really don't want that many ... I can quite happily do with 4 or 5 at the most so that when this model is instanced several times in the final large area assembly I don't have thousands and thousands of lurking useless polygons slowing down the EIAS Animator renders. But I can find no way to reduce the number created by the rounding process. I have tried setting the scheme to low resolution - I have tried using simple and sliding the percentage slider down ...and down ... to 2% ! None of it makes any difference ! So now I am going to have to do this simple task with a volume of revolution instead so that I can create a curve at each end with just a few points in it. Once upon a time things used to be much simpler, more logical, and a really useful tool to aid productivity. Now I feel like I have to fight and struggle all the time to try and achieve the same simple tasks that were once so easy. I can only think it must just be me getting too ancient. Cheers Rod
