Error writing JPEG file "logo.jpg" ?

I think that Form.z applies the term "logo.jpg" automatically to a lost or corrupt texture map. I for one keep most of my texture maps in one place. However, I have found that when a map is lost then form.z creates a new map in the Form.z folder under Textures. If it is corrupt then you won't be able to even open it in PS. Now for the issue of materials. Are you saying that you have no materials with any attached image files for your model? Now that would be weird to get that error. Has Tech given you any insight?

    New project window missing.

I guess there are two things you can do to get them back. First is to reset your workspace which is fairly common. The second is to throw out your preference folder and let Form.z rebuild it upon restart. I used to do this several times per week but lately things have calmed down with the latest WIP. AW

My guess is that you have a corrupted jpeg somewhere in your materials. It should be obvious which one as it will have the good old red question mark on it in the preview. Sometimes it happens to me when the extension gets corrupted accidentally.

My background is in architecture and art so I tend to lean toward more dramatic and inspiring images. Developers and real estate agents tend to aim for the safest images that will appeal to the largest audience. But you know the old saying: " creating something that will appeal to everyone leads us to something that appeals to no one. " . This is how we ended up with beige subdivisions of generic buildings. Another good example is the Pontiac Aztec which is still studied in design school as "what not to do". It was a designed by customer feedback and opinion polls. Failed miserably and you would be hard pressed to even find one today. I was a member of the American Society of Architectural illustrators for many years. Each year they have a competition for the best illustrations. If you talk to the winners they almost always admit that their image was done for themselves and not a client. If you compare their client image to the presented one you would be amazed at how different they are. I would encourage everyone here to take a few of their best images and recreate them to their liking. Then post those images to our site to better show the potential of Form.z and V-ray.

Alan I flood my interiors with light because when I work with developers and god forbid realtors they tend to ask for images that are similar to what you would find in a real estate brochure. In essence they do not like to see strong shadows and they want all the elements of the room to be equally illuminated. I personally hate this direction and if an image has strong potential I will render it out with a different light scheme to use for my portfolio. At the end of the day though they pay the bills (hopefully) and therefore I give them what they want. For those who are interested in creating interiors I usually start with a V-ray sun outside and turn down the intensity to 50% or less. Then I put a light plane just outside the window that is the same size as the window with an intensity of about 75. Turn off visibility and affects reflections and turn on portal light for that plane. Then I go in and create a box inside the room that does not touch anything and I convert that to a mesh light with an intensity of about 30. Turn off visibility and affects reflections. Then I go to my camera and adjust the exposure. There is a little back and forth and sometimes I find the need to add a few more mesh or plane lights. I do find that adding cone, sphere or IES lights really doesn't really contribute much and can lead to more unpredictable results. Emitters are useless as well unless they are the only things that contribute to the scene. One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes these mesh lights can cast some bizarre shadows on the ceiling. I still can not figure out why but I have worked with David on this and will continue to do so. These images render really quickly no matter how much geometry I throw in there.

love the new fur tool for pillows, throws and carpet. Pay careful attention to the scale of the individual hairs or fibers. Defaults are a little clunky.

    Copy or Duplicate Many function?

Of course. One of the more basic functions of most CAD programs. Select an object using the pick tool. Select the move tool. In the upper right corner of your screen is the tool options palette. You will see a series of red and blue balls. The far right one is the multicopy object. You can determine the number of copies, the distance between, etc. You can also place a set number of objects along any path using the T-form 2 tools near the bottom of your modeling tools.

    V-Ray and Sun Position

I just move my sun location according to what time of day I want. Moving the sun low to the west provides a nice low intensity evening glow. There are several things that don't work with V-ray sun and the one I find most disruptive is the intensity slider. You have to use your overrides in the lights parameters options in order to adjust it.

How do I create a face?

One thing I do love about 3ds Max is the way that you can stack modifiers on top of basic geometry. I fmz you have to swap the sub d to get back to the original faceted geometry. In Max you would just turn off the modifier in the stack. You can also adjust each modifier in the stack in real time and go back and forth to see the results. I would love to see something like that in FMZ.

Allen I use plane lights and mesh lights almost exclusively now. For my light fixtures I use a sphere and then mesh light it. Works so much better than cones or points and seems to have no affect on render time. IES lights are a bust for now. V-ray seems to ignore the intensity so I have to adjust them up to extremely high levels to do anything. The nice thing about mesh and plane lights is that they can be used as fill lights and directional lights and quickly scaled.

    tool bar issues

Hmmm. All these things should be retained in your preference folder only unless I am confused .....which is often the case. When you deleted your preference folder did you go to: C drive/Users/Your computer name/ App data/Roaming/Autodessys? Do you have multiple copies of either Form.z or V-ray on your drive?

I think it looks great. We are all our own worst critics at times. I agree that Maxwell was fantastic but I just could never justify the time it took to create images like this. If on inspection you find that the image is a bit blurry you can increase the shading rate under the Raytrace settings. It only slows down my render a little but I have a fairly robust machine.

    Vray renders textures inverted

It is Monday so it was time to throw out my preference folder again. Once I did that your model rendered perfectly in V-ray. Once again this seems to be the go to fix for all problems V-ray related. Cheers AW Beware transparency maps in V-ray. They seem to corrupt materials very easily. I rendered your model out with no Trans maps and it worked fine

    Vray renders textures inverted

I am stumped on this one. I got your double pedal to work by renaming it and doing a save as in PS. However, it is the single pedal that is causing a lot of issues. Changing it in PS doesn't help. Everything seems to be set up properly. One thing to note is that once you set up your material in Shaded and translate it to Vray it is almost impossible to change some of the V-ray settings. For instance, I eliminated the transparency map in RZ but V-ray just wouldn't let go of it. So I had to create a new material to get rid of it. Still didn't solve the problem though. I hate to say it but throwing out your preference folder might help. Sometimes Vray holds onto things and never lets go. Really wish FMZ would solve all their texture mapping and material issues some day. Perhaps if Tech checks in some time they might have a solution.

When all else fails throw out your preference folder. FMZ will rebuild it when you relaunch. I can't tell you how many issues this solves for me on a weekly basis.

    obj import issues

This has been an issue for many years now. Translations of materials from other programs has always been an issue in FMZ. I wish there was a simple solution to this problem but I am afraid that it may never get solved. Are you receiving models from clients or downloading models from websites like TurboSquid? If they are coming from clients have them send it in a different format like 3ds or fbx. If they are coming from a website see if they have them in FBX. Then there is also this free online file converter that I have used in difficult situations: https://www.yobi3d.com/3d-file-convert The file size has to be below 40MB which is unfortunate for larger models. My other go to solution is to import it into a different program first and then into form.z. I keep around an old version of MAX for this purpose as well as a few others. Curiously I have found on occasion that some models I get in OBJ translate perfectly into FMZ with all materials properly mapped and no transparency issue. I guess it is how that person texture mapped the object or how they saved the maps. I really should study those models to see what it different about them.

I have been going back and forth with V-ray lights experimenting with different combinations. Plane lights are excellent for interiors but I usually start with a mesh light (box) floating in the middle of the space to start with. I just need to make sure that it is not too close or intersecting any geometry. Another thing I try to do is to make a plane light that has an image map (HDR) that brings some atmospheric color into the space. Looks like you might have that as well. Or did you add a dome light with a map? I hope others can benefit from these conversations in the forum.
