    Turquoise artifacts

    I am in desperate need of some help and hope that someone out there has seen this issue. I have a huge project that is due Monday and the program just started glitching out on me. Everything was rendering just fine in test images and then suddenly my whole render image went turquoise blue. I restarted the program and the color came back to normal but now many of my materials have weird turquoise blue artifacts. I restarted my computer several times and each time the image is different and corrupted. It is worth noting that the only thing I changed in my model was the addition of two people that are scene files. They do not have lights associated with them. Anyone else ever have this issue? Is there anyone other than Justin and I even using V-ray? Thanks for any help you can offer AW

    DWG import colours script (LAB?)

    You should have gotten a warning when you imported the DWG a second time. A pop up window should tell you that the imported file has the same material names as the current project. It should ask you if you want to use the materials in the current project or the ones from your clipboard. You would just use the ones from your current project. Are you not getting that warning? AW

    test render window?

    Sure. I assume you are trying to use V-ray to render a region. In that case you hit the render button and the v-ray render window opens automatically and starts rendering. Just stop the render and then at the top menu bar there is another little Teapot with a red little icon next to it. That is the render region button. click on it and then draw a rectangle around the area you want rendered.

    Easy Bottom of modeling tool palette just above the trash can icon is the edit axis icon. I think that is what you are looking for.

    Josephus I am not sure what you are trying to do but closed 2d geometry is by definition a surface. Could you post a screen shot or the actual model piece to examine?

    I agree with you completely on this one. It would be nice if the objects palette was more useful but I have never found a way to find my objects easily in there. As a result I always have the objects palette turned off.

    Here is another example of exterior and interior lighting. The final render at 4500 pxl wide took about 14min. I am very impressed with the speed and quality of Vray these days but there are still a few bugs to work out. I also wish they would fix this forum so that my images can be viewed at full res.

    Not that I am aware of. Looks like it is baked into the program since it is not one of the listed key shortcuts.

    Yes Right click on the snap to point (or any other) option and a menu pops up for snap options. There you will find "project on reference plane".

That said here are a few new images for review. Still a work in progress but every week it is getting better. Still having trouble with portal lights and dome lights in association with other lights in the scenes.

    Interior lighting settings

    I have been messing around with trying to optimize the lighting for an interior scene and thought I would share what I have found to serve as a guide. Hopefully this will help others with the constant trial and error. The trick is to balance the portal lights so that they affect the scene while adding light in specific areas. My scene is a condo in Grand Cayman with big windows behind the camera and a hallway with a glass door at the other end. I created a plane light for each window and placed it inside the room just inside the glass. Make them portal lights in the parameters and set them to 100 intensity. Be sure to turn off Affect Reflection if you don't want them to reflect off the shiny surfaces in your room. It is not necessary to turn on Invisible as that doesn't seem to affect the plane since they are portals and that is redundant. Now comes the interesting part. You could just adjust the camera to adapt to the portal lights but my clients often want more control over how the areas of the room are illuminated. So I found the best method is to use mesh lights to flood certain areas of the room with additional light. Mesh lights are still a work in progress at this point so be careful. I create a rectangular box about 24 inches high that is about 50% of the size of the area I want to illuminate. Place it a little lower than mid way between the floor and ceiling and make sure it doesn't touch anything. If you get your mesh light too close to the ceiling you will get strange light patterns from the box shape. Make them invisible and set their intensity to 25%. IMPORTANT: Do not rotate these mesh lights! Currently that corrupts them. I also ran into issues when scaling their size so create a new light for each area. Hopefully the next release will fix a few of these quirks since Tech is aware of them. Now you can go to your camera settings. For this room and my conditions I set my ISO to 300, aperture of 11 and speed at 120. This is close to real world photography settings so if you are familiar with cameras that helps. Other things of interest: If you have very reflective surfaces (in my case high gloss cabinets) then you need to place a plane with the reflection texture map behind the camera. Turn off shadow casting and receiving for the plane and set it to Emissive in V-ray materials. My scene was the sky and ocean behind me which added color to the reflective cabinets and atmosphere to the room. These are apparent in the Raw Reflection channel which I overlay in PS using the soft light layer mode. I use the Reflection Channel over that and set it to Screen mode. Adjust the levels as needed. Always include a Material ID output channel in your render so that you can adjust all your materials later. Now there has been a lot written about Noise in the reflection channel in all V-ray platforms and now I will address it for Form.z. As the distance from the camera increased in my scene the noise got much worse. My past solution was to Despeckle my Raw Reflection Channel in PS but that often led to a muted and blurry reflection. Tech informed me that I need to add more light to that area to supply more rays or I needed to render out at a much higher resolution (6000 px wide). Adding light might not be what you want and huge renders take time. There is another option which is under V-ray settings- Raytrace- Optimization - Shading rate. Default is 8 and you can set that to 16 to 32 which slowed the render but cleaned up the noise quite a bit. While you are in the settings you can also solve another issue if you have multiple transparent surfaces overlapping each other ( a glass bowl on a glass table in front of a window for instance). Your alpha channel will not render correctly unless you increase your Max Trace Depth. Default is 5 but you might need to increase it to 6 to 8. There are a lot of other little tweaks at our disposal but this seems to be a good starting point for my images. I would be very interested to see how others are setting up their lighting for interiors and how it affects quality and render times. AW PS. I tried to post an image but this forum is still broken.

    open / add project broken in last build?

    I just tested this on my system and it worked as expected. I go to "open" a project and then click "add to project" to add what I want. All materials and views came in fine. Windows 7 Nvidea gtx1080 running FMZ 8.6 with V-ray.

    Material ID

    I completely agree. The material ID channel is critical to post production work no matter what your field is. Every client likes to tweak the final materials and re rendering is a complete waste of time. Form.z must implement a material color ID channel into the Form.z translated materials without having to translate it into a V-ray material first. I will see what they say.

    Perhaps I am missing something obvious but after much searching I still have not found a way to set a material ID color. What I want to do is have the ID of my V-ray glass separated out in photoshop so that I can place a reflection on my building very accurately. Any clue how to do that?

    Finally. After searching for another 45 minutes I found it. For those out there that like to adjust their materials post production here it is: Go to the stand alone material editor Advanced-Options-Color-ID color This is an important feature that most people will find useful. It should be noted that within Form.z there is no way that I have found to set the material ID. You must save it as a V-ray material first and then use the Editor.

    how to "convert..." ?

    There is that little old script called "separate objects by color" that I often use in situations like this. Anything that can help to break up bound objects can work. Do you happen to have any other 3d programs?

    I would use OBJ. However, I am working with Tech right now on fixing the FBX import issue. They seem to have found a bug that they are correcting to some extent. FBX textures continue to be a "nightmare" as they put it.

    Problem with an old FZ Youtube tutorial

    That tutorial is from 2007 using 6.7. That tool went away and I must say I do miss it. The T-sub tool you are looking at is very similar to the Turbo Smooth tool in 3DS Max which I use for this very reason. Take any object no matter how complex or simple and simply smooth the whole thing out and adjust without having to convert things to Nurbs or Subdivision objects.

    Area pick tool not working

    I am on windows but it is working for me. Under the pick area tool options make sure that you have "select" chosen rather than "deselect". I made that mistake once.
  21. Spannerhead To import texture maps from a different form.z model you would hit Command O. Then in the lower left corner of the dialogue box there is a little box called "add to project". Once you choose your project just select all the things you want to add, like texture maps, lights or views. You can easily purge unwanted textures by right clicking in the materials palette and hitting purge.
  22. I forgot to answer your questions: In order to pick an object by its face you need to be in shaded mode. In wireframe you need to pick the edge. The pick options are under the tool options palette or by right clicking the pick icon. You can change the size of the axis by using a new tool in the grid dialogue box. It is next to the little icon that looks like a pyramid and which is next to the grid subdivision number. The perpendicular (ortho) icon is down at the bottom in the grid snap palette. I believe you need to ungroup objects if you want to pick an individual object within. I do not use the group tool for this reason and instead I just use layers to group things. Hope this helps
  23. Making the switch from 6.5 to 8 is no easy task. You need to change your fundamental thinking on how things are now done. Some of the tools and interface are the same but many have changed substantially. For instance, now we do almost all our work in shaded view when previously I worked exclusively in wireframe. I would recommend going through the basic tutorials to get a better feel for it. You will eventually learn to love the new interface but even now there are certain things about 6.5 that I miss terribly. Like the stability and texture mapping tools. For what its worth I know they are working on a release of V9 that has the promise of changing the interface once again. However, if history is any guide that release could be either months or years away. They are very quiet about it at the moment. Good luck and be patient.

    Can openings be copied?

    I am not entirely sure what you are trying to do. Copy a window opening in a wall for instance? If so then create an opening, choose the pick tool and set it to select "holes", then select the hole and move it while the copy tool is active. Of course the wall must be planar for this to work. I also use the Boolean difference tool a lot for creating multiple openings in a complex piece of geometry. Does this help?

    8.6.2 Crash --> SubD and Reshape

    I can confirm that this is a bug. I have the same crash. Fortunately there are many ways to create geometry in Form.z and everyone does things differently. For many years we have found ways to work around buggy tools and we have learned which ones to avoid. If you are truly new to Form.z take some time to go through the tutorials to see how things are done.
