    Hi Theo, While I cannot answer for Tech, I can tell you that Decals were working when I tested them originally, and due to a new bug, are currently not working. I'm sure a fix is coming soon. You will need to use the Decal tool included in FormZ here, not the VRay Decal tool, which is part of the VRay Asset system FormZ does not yet have SDK access to since it is developed by ADS and not Chaos like the SketchUp example. That's a bit of a double edged sword. On one side, we have a much more integrated VRay plugin that works more seamlessly in FormZ, where our lights and materials automatically translate between native app and VRay. Other applications like VRay for Rhino, do not do this and have to be converted. It also means we have a built in VRay material editor that works well with other FormZ rendering modes, something missing in those other VRay plugins. In my experience, having used both for projects, the integrated FormZ version is easier and quicker to work with when using multiple rendering methods (Shaded Full for early concepts and VRAY for refined concepts). On the other side of the sword, we 'CURRENTLY' do not have access to the typical VRay Asset manager that you see referenced in these VRay videos. It's a Chaos Group issue and it's not available in the SDK for ADS to implement yet. That means we are currently missing a couple of things like Chaos Cosmos, and Chaos Cloud. If you want to use the Chaos Cosmos, you'll need a separate VRay license for one of the other VRay products like Vantage, SketchUp, Rhino, 3DS, C4D. Then you can export your FormZ scene as a .VRSCENE file from FormZ and bring it into the other VRay install and use Cosmos there. A little round about? I suppose, but It's about the same as using the Datasmith export method to bring FormZ projects into Twinmotion. Hope this helps to clarify some expectations while we wait for Tech. Cheers!
  2. I like to just hold the CTRL key and click the Right mouse button and move your mouse to Set View... I have added the Hand tool to the middle mouse button for quick movements as well.

    Yes, Decals should be working in V-Ray 5 for FormZ. I'm sure they are working on getting it fixed as it was working in a previous build. V-Ray 5 is a substantial upgrade and worth every penny even without Decals IMHO. I was merely providing an alternative to Decals that is easier to use since Shaded display modes will also show it. I use Shaded Full a lot in my work, sometimes as conceptual development before moving to full V-Ray renderings and have been frustrated by Decals lack of Shaded (OpenGL) support. This alternative allows both Shaded Full and V-Ray to be used on the same project with logos applied to various objects. It's nice to have options isn't it?

    I agree with the others. You clearly have very nice modeling skills, but with the modern SMOOTH geometry, you will have an even easier time, and you can really stop worrying about and thinking about faceting segments. If at the end of your smooth modeling, you can easily use the Convert Object tool to make it Faceted if you need to for some reason.

    Hello, If you offset and trim a surface slightly above your object, you can use a PNG transparency map to achieve a nice Decal look, even with a logo on a spherical, metallic surface:

    I agree, the verbiage for the button could be better. Maybe, 'Import Material for Editing' would be more appropriate?

    In VRay 5 for FormZ, the VRay texture editor is now smartly built in to FormZ. No more need for that wonky add-on app. Load your chosen VRMAT file, then click 'Import Material'. This will Import the VRMAT files settings so you can edit them just like the old Editor. We also have a lot more settings now than we did in v3: I'm finding this much easier than the old method, but it does take a minute to adapt to it.

    Setting up temporary origin

    I've had to do this numerous times. The simple option I have found is to simply make a Point (Draw Point tool) , or even draw a 3D Cube with a point ending at the new 'origin' you need. Then it's just a matter of being mindful of using your point snaps while placing your various objects in relation to that location. Does that help?

  11. Fun stuff. Thank you for sharing. I'm waiting for the Direct Link plugin before jumping further into Twinmotion. We simply get too many changes to the files to use a Import/Export method like Datasmith. Any word on the Direct Link upgrade for Twinmotion for FormZ?

    9.1 components still buggy... any updates?

    9.2 is out... you can try that. Components are a bit of a mixed bag. I found if they contain only native, FormZ created geometry, to work well. However if you try to make components out of imported geometry, it can hang as you are describing. This happened to me on something as simple as a small wheel caster I had imported. The geometry looked very clean, if a bit meshed. It simply did not work well in FormZ as a component, but once I quickly traced it for a native FormZ geometry, and made a component, all was well. Hope this helps.

    VRay background texture multiplier settings

    What is the end result you are looking for? What is the current background texture image? Clouds on a blue sky? Or the forest scene? Or? Is it a flat image or a spherical hdri or exr image? In the past, I also had difficulty setting up an accurate background image so I simply made a large plane that I mapped the image onto. Then you can easily place it just where you want it. You can also use a low powered emitter material here and it will act as an IBL for the scene if you desire. Other thoughts would be the semi transparent glass material may be able to be adjusted so that it doesn't receive as much of the background image. Using a double pane setup can help with this too.

    V-Ray 5 for form•Z Beta now available

    Sensitive are we? - in my best Yoda voice I wish the choices were more even sided as well. Hell, I would even use Linux if I could get all these in demand creative apps for it. But, no, most of us are stuck with Windows, not because it's better, but because it's much more open to the technology powering things like VRay 5. I loved my Macs for more than a decade too. But Apple made it unreasonable to continue using them for our workflow. Which evolved to demand faster and faster rendering for the constant changes to the projects. I had the fastest Apple computer of the times, a 12 core Mac Pro with dual Nvidia GPUs capable of VRay GPU rendering in MacOS. But they killed the driver support and with it, the possibility of using their ecosystem as efficiently as we were accustomed to. I truly wish that weren't the case and we still had CUDA drivers for Mac. Competition is good for the market. Maybe one day?

    It is much more useful to talk about what is working and useful in the current state, rather than wishful thinking about something far out of AutoDesSys's control such as VRAY GPU on Apple. VRAY CPU works on the Apple hardware, be happy for that.     Chaos Cosmos & Animation Plug-Ins?

    Hey Tim, I was told that because VRay for FormZ is developed by AutoDesSys instead of Chaos directly, that means we do not have the same SDK access to the required Asset Manager that the other VRay installations have. That means we are missing a few things, namely Chaos Cloud (seamless cloud rendering) and Chaos Cosmos (a Twinmotion style scene builder), because they do not yet have a SDK available to integrate them inside VRay for FormZ as the other features have been. This is unfortunate, but likely to change in the future as Chaos releases more SDK availability. I will say that this is a bit of a double edge sword though, since our plugin is more tightly integrated than most of the Chaos VRay plugins, meaning everything VRay can be controlled from inside FormZ, without the need for that added manager, which doesn't sync as easily and automatically for things like materials, and lighting when they are used in other FormZ modes like Shaded Full, or even RenderZone. Our version feels like it's a part of FormZ, not just an add-on.

    I asked the same thing... If you download the newest build with the same link, it now has light groups working with light mix! I'm unsure about the emissive materials though. Did you try putting them in a material group to see if that does anything?

    There isn't one, but the necessary dimension tools and note tools for call outs are built-in to the modeling toolset. Look under the Text group of tools.

    V-Ray 5 for form•Z Beta now available

    I'm sorry, but you are confused and It is true that VRay GPU is unlikely to be ported to Apple Metal. The VRAY GPU engine is unique from the other VRAY engines and requires CUDA which is no longer available on the ApplecrapOS. Plain ole original VRAY CPU will work on Apple hardware, as was already described. Setting up distributed rendering with Windows or Linux machines using GPUs will also work, but your ability to fast 'preview' your GPU scene will be missing on an Apple computer without the built in CUDA CPU, as you'd be requested the slave machines do this very basic task. This is because the Apple cannot create the preview of the VRAY GPU engine itself without CUDA. Which is just plain dumb, and Apple's fault for not supporting the industry standard CUDA rendering. If they would make this simple change, they might have a chance at some professional 3D Rendering market share, but without it, there will only be a handful of wishful users attempting it as a workaround. Windows machines make better 3D workstations. I wish I could say that Chaos Cloud was an option, but unfortunately, our version of FormZ VRAY 5 does not include access to the seamless Chaos Cloud rendering service at this time.
