I think V8.6.5 was FZ's "finest hour" to date.

When they get to V9.5 let me know. That seems to be when things are sorted.
Until then I will stay with 8.5.6

I don't see FZ as ever being more than a niche company. They just don't have the developmental or marketing dollars to compete with the big boys, and I don't think they have anything special a larger company might consider buying out. My employer dictates that I use it, and I am ok with that. It's a decent software and for the most part I can do my work. However, If I had my choice I would not be using it. I'm not being harsh it's just my honest opinion. Since I started using FZ with V7 it seems to follow the same pattern that it takes a while for them to get it sorted out. With that being said everyone stay safe and happy holidays.

Clipped pallets, missing scroll bars etc, throughout and lots of other minor glitches.
Sometimes pallets or tool dialogues, errors etc disappear, likely behind other windows with no easy way to fix other than to quit formZ and delete the preference folder.
The tabbed pallet icons are tiny and low contrast, horrible on a 4K display.
These rough edges might be acceptable in a new application but are not what you would expect in a mature application like FormZ.
There are lots of other UI problems such as duplicate and missing icons. For example, paste and paste in place are identical, there are lots of tools with the FMZ puzzle piece icon.
Stick with 8.6 unless you need python or the mirror tools.

I did this Coke bottle with sub-d as a bit of a personal challenge. It's a 20 oz plastic bottle, and is a little different that the glass one.
The real kicker was the bottom. Took me a little while to figure it out

    FZnoob,
What is your name?   Nice work!
Here is the updated bottle, where the poly flow is corrected.  My first attempt, I made it harder than it should have been.
I will make a tutorial.  My audio capture sucks on my computer, so I ordered a podcasting Mic.  I should have it tomorrow.

This is exactly why I don't like the idea of having to buy additional software. You never know when it might be dropped.
I used C4D for over 10 years. It came with a very good rendering engine and I never needed to buy or upgrade anything outside.
Yes, there were other renders available (including Maxwell) but for my day to day needs the bundled renderer was excellent.

FZnoob reacted to snow in Why isn't formz more popular?
Honestly I have a hard time seriously recommending formZ to other designers.  Yes I am very fast in creating models but find a seasoned 3DS/C4D/Sketchup/Rhino user and they could likely build the same model within a comparable time frame.
Unfortunately speed isn't the only thing that matters.  3DS and C4D might lack a level of precision that formZ inherently has, but there's a level of parametric modeling that formZ doesn't have i.e. live booleans.  Couple this with NUMEROUS 3rd party plugins and rendering engines and you have a hard time trying to pry a visual artist from those programs.  Blender and Modo can be tossed in this mix too.
C4D also has one of the cleanest interfaces in the business, especially considering the scale of the program.  Blender and Modo both have VERY nice interfaces that are modern and sleek.  3DS is a little behind in this category but they have the backing of Autodesk so it plays well with everything else that is popular from Autodesk (Revit, Maya, Inventor...).
Sketchup is extremely basic and intuitive right out of the box, which is very attractive, but the program has the ability to grow with the user because of the extension warehouse.  Don't want to manually fillet that edge?  Well there's a plugin for that.  It was also free for a very long time and was initially backed by Google.
Rhino, IMHO is the most comparable program to formZ but I find it a bit more flexible.  The Rhino for Mac interface is super clean and the more I work with the program the more aware I've become of it's expansive tool set.  However it's not inherently a solid modeler so there always seems to be an extra step or to to get what I need to the engineers in my office.  It also has a LOT of 3rd party plugin/rendering engine support.  Oh, and Grasshopper is awesome.
I feel like formZ is best with users who know it best.  I know that if I recommend it to someone they would undoubtedly come across one of the many "quirks" of formZ and I'd have to steer them away from certain tools or actions to prevent a crash (i.e. components).  Having known a number of people who work in these other programs and having worked in them myself I can see why they are so popular and why many never return back to a previous program.
The unpopularity of formZ isn't because it's a bad program.  It's not.  It's a very GOOD program..... BUT.... the many other 3D modelers/visuallizers that have a number of pros that outweigh the cons compared to formZ.

Is this application still a living thing? In the years since Upgrading to FZ 8.x I have had three revisions to MODO, two revisions to Rhino and Blender has launched a free 3D application that emphasizes how far 3D tech and hardware have come.
There were 2 posts in 2018 about v9 and the few from 2019 sound like calls in the wilderness. Ever since unveiling their support for V-Ray, it's seemed like all further development went into suspended animation. A better rendering solution was a MUST... but there are still lots of things to improve and frankly, considering MODO, Rhino and Blender all have stellar renderers built into the package... the price point on FromZ (which needs an outside renderer to compete) is not making a whole lot of sense.
I dunno ADS, feels like you're losing interest or conceding that time has simply passed FormZ by.

Let me give you an advise: forget about component system in FormZ. It is a total mess. I tried to sort it out on on pretty complex project which resulted total rebuild of all component related modeling. Neither forum nor Support where of help since component system is faulty by design. Alas!

FZnoob got a reaction from Justin Montoya in Sharp edges/creases in sub-d models?
Adding "sharp" edges in FZ sub-d is basically the same as in most other programs.
    You essentially have 2 options:
One is to use the "edge/point" sharpness tool. You have to be careful with this as too much starts to create a "pinched" effect.
The other is to simply to add additional geometry with the "insert sequences" command.
There is a lot that can be done with sub-d if you take the time to really learn the correct approach.
With that being said, I don't mind adding that FZ's sub-d tool set leaves a lot to be desired when compared to
Cinema4D or even Strata for that matter.

I started using Strata in 1997. I think it was called "Strata Blitz" or something like that.
At that time there weren't many 3D apps for the Mac.
Since then I worked in Cimena4D, 3DS Max, and now FZ.
Anyhow, I have worked with a few ex Strata users and they all seem to be confused by FZ.
There isn't much out there in the way of tutorial stuff beyond the little that FZ provides, so if you are on your own it's a pain.
I just hunkered down and through a lot of trial and error (plus what I already knew)
I have more or less gotten good at it.
See the attachment on selecting points, edges, and faces.
