    VRAY - Huge Material Problem!

I know that RZ is a plugin, that's why it has to be registered separately. My point is, given that FZ is a small company with very limited $$ for development, I hope than other improvements don't come via a plug-ins rather than integrated. I have requested a symmetry tool and someone else suggested a plugin. I don't want yet another license to buy and keep up with.

    "Show Controls" not working?

That's what I meant when I asked if you had the object selected.

    Sharp edges/creases in sub-d models?

I started using Strata in 1997. I think it was called "Strata Blitz" or something like that. At that time there weren't many 3D apps for the Mac. Since then I worked in Cimena4D, 3DS Max, and now FZ. Anyhow, I have worked with a few ex Strata users and they all seem to be confused by FZ. There isn't much out there in the way of tutorial stuff beyond the little that FZ provides, so if you are on your own it's a pain. I just hunkered down and through a lot of trial and error (plus what I already knew) I have more or less gotten good at it. See the attachment on selecting points, edges, and faces.

    "Show Controls" not working?

Just wondering if you ever got this sorted out?

    VRAY - Huge Material Problem!

I'm holding off on V-Ray for now. I don't really need it, but I would like something better than Renderzone. I hope that future FZ improvements don't come via plugin but are integrated into the app itself.

    Sharp edges/creases in sub-d models?

Adding "sharp" edges in FZ sub-d is basically the same as in most other programs. You essentially have 2 options: One is to use the "edge/point" sharpness tool. You have to be careful with this as too much starts to create a "pinched" effect. The other is to simply to add additional geometry with the "insert sequences" command. There is a lot that can be done with sub-d if you take the time to really learn the correct approach. With that being said, I don't mind adding that FZ's sub-d tool set leaves a lot to be desired when compared to Cinema4D or even Strata for that matter.

    "Show Controls" not working?

Also, If you go to the top menu bar: Edit / key shortcuts you can get the “shortcuts manger” pallet from there you can select “load defaults”

    "Show Controls" not working?

I take it the keyboard shortcut isn't working either? Are you using any sort of custom workspace? Those can be problematic at times. About the only thing I could suggest is a fresh install. Maybe someone else has another solution. Restarting the app always fixes it for me.

    "Show Controls" not working?

I know this may sound silly, but do you have the object selected? If so and the "show controls" isn't working a restart usually corrects it. This happens to me quite a lot when doing sub d modeling. The "show controls" gets stuck "on" or "off" as well.

How do I create a face?

I generally stuck with the sub-d tool pallets in sub-d "mode". You can however use the "swap" command to turn off the sub-d, and then work with the standard tools. I use this approach quite often.

How do I create a face?

on a sub-divided object you can use the "close hole" tool

    Top Ten FormZ 9 list

+1 for that Also: a symmetry tool and a more accurate way to insert "sequences". The current method is clumsy at best.

    Candy Bar Modeled with Subdivision

Sure thing! I have some more sub-d tips for modeling common items. I have been doing it a long time with a variety of different programs. I came up with a few approaches that might be helpful. I sort of took what I knew and adapted it to FZ's toolset. When I get time, I will put a couple of them together.
  16. This is a quick study on how to model a candy bar wrapper with subdivision. It's a 2 page pdf. Sub-D Candy Bar.pdf

    sub D help

Thanks guys. I created a 2 page pdf of this and uploaded it to the "tutorial" section of the forum. "Candy Bar Modeled With Subdivision" I hope that FZ sees fit to add a symmetry tool in the future. It would cut the work it half.

sorry for the double post. I thought it was too big. Anyways here's a final render as well.

    sub D help

Here you go. I did it pretty fast, so I hope it's clear. If you get stuck let me know. It's not difficult once you understand the concept. Looks like I am going to have to upload it in 2 files due to the size. Here's pg 1

    sub D help

Tech showed perhaps the most simple way to do it. My approach would require a few more steps and some additional geometry. The end result would be something a bit softer and a little more realistic. I should have time tomorrow to post a series of step by step series screenshots to get you started. Once you get the hang of it, you can tackle some more difficult shapes. Do you happen to have a better image of the wrapper? That would be helpful but not completely necessary. If you look in the "tutorial" section of this forum you will find a 3 part series I did on sub-d modeling a leather chair. It might be a bit more than you want to tackle now, but it's something you can play around with if you care to.

    sub D help

Sometimes I look back over old posts to pick up a tip or 2. When I found this one, I realized I never did get around to doing a sub d tray. So I gave it a go this morning. After a couple of false starts I was able to produce this model using nothing but the sub d tools. It's a clean mesh with no triangles, which I always try to avoid.

    VRay and Renderzone

We are locked down tight. Trying to get anything resolved with IT takes weeks not days. My trial expired and they never did get back to me.
