Come on Autodessys, you need to promote this on your site with a direct link...

This is part 1 of the tutorial in which I show my method to model the base of the chair using sub-division modeling.
It's fairly straight forward and shouldn't take but a few minutes to complete.

I will be posting part 2 as soon as I get time to complete it.

I just posted part 1 in the "tutorials" section of the forum.
The title is "Model a leather chair with sub-division Pt1".

As noted, I will get part 2 posted as soon as I get time.

Thanks Anton for setting up this resource - I have looked at a few times and even downloaded a few models - unfortunately I didn't use them in the final designs.

Is there anyway Tech could pin this thread to make it easier to find the site. Or give it some other kind of prominence?

Last time I used it I had to search back through stuff to find it. This could become an even better resource for users if new users knew it was there.

Thanks Anton for adding to our great community!

Have you tried the cubic render option on render zone?

Go to 'display' menu > 'render cubic panorama'.

You can than view this with the bit of code in a web browser. You need something like 'tour weaver' or 'pano2VR' to add hotspots etc. and get the most out of it.

Have tried this and got good results after a bit of internet research.

bluemonkey reacted to Tech in Create Circle or Arc tangent to three lines
We have had a number of requests in the last week to have a tool in formZ that creates a Circle or Arc tangent to three lines. We will add this to a future version, but until then, here is a little plugin that does this (require v8.5.3 or later)

To add to your formZ download and decompress the .zip file. copy the "arc_lines" folder to the /plugins directory of your formZ installation.

The tool should appear in the Extensions Tool Row at the bottom of the modeling tool palette. You may need to Reset your Workspace (or add it via the Tool Manager) if it does not show up automatically.

To use the tool, select the tool, pick 3 lines or edges and it makes a tangent arc or circle as set in the Tool Options. The Trim option only applies to lines (i.e. if you pick edges of a solid, they will not be trimmed).

    Enjoy!

    Hi Bluemonkey,

There shouldn't be any special tricks necessary.  In general I typically just import with the default options (with Construct Solids and Join Coplanar faces off -- and only enable those options when they are specifically necessary to the file).

If you find there are missing objects in formZ but not in another program, copy those objects to their own project in the other program and export those by themselves.  If they still fail to appear when importing into formZ, you can send that simple file with the problem objects to us, and we will see what we can do to help...

Vector works has this and I have found it tremendously helpful to input the math equation directly in the coordinate input in that program. I also like the ability in that program to be able to put in a numeric value in a different measurement system other than the set units. For example, while working in Imperial ft-in, to be able to put in the thickness of stone countertops as 2cm or 3cm for example. You can even add 2cm+3in in Vectorworks input. Or another example calculating an angular input, i.e. 360/22 on the fly rather than opening up a separate calculator doing the calculation and the entering it in formZ.

Thanks for the update Anton, I'm looking forward to this.

I did had little play with Thea studio demo a few years ago but didn't immediately gel with it and didn't have much time to get to grips with it.

I'm hoping that the plug-in will obviously make working a lot more immediate and also there will be some quick start tutorials and 'wizards' to get us working with it quickly!

    V-Ray | formZ is coming!

We are wrapping up a few developments to prepare for a private beta release. We are hoping to have a releasable version in the next two weeks.

Are you ready? We are and we believe we have what will be the next most valuable tool in your digital toolbox!

    Some first facts:

    1. V-Ray for formZ is running on both WIN and OSX.

    2. We are requiring that you have the latest version of formZ 8.5.

    3. V-Ray for the most part will need the same machine specifications as you need for formZ itself. If you have more CPU power and RAM that's fine too. If you have a GPU then bring it on!

    4. We are going to be looking for images and projects to share as part of our marketing efforts. What ever you can share with us we'd appreciate it.

    5. This is Beta software. Although we recognize it as a stable release please use caution when using the plugin. Work on files that you know you have backed up or that you will not risk your livelihood on.

If you're interested please drop us an email at vray@formz.com with examples of your best rendering work. If you can give us an idea of the amount of time you think you can dedicate to testing on a weekly basis that would be helpful too.

Finally, let us know if you have questions.

bluemonkey got a reaction from nadir in GPU vs CPU makes rendering faster?
GPU can make full shaded faster but not render zone (that uses cpu only) - most other renderers e.g maxwell, use cpu only. Thea uses CPU and can use GPU too, (there are others that do as well) but this needs to be NVIDEA card not AMD.

Also if you add up the cores x speed you will find the 2 processor options balance each other out. Also, most of the time, when not rendering, you will be using a single core.

I'm sure someone will correct me, but I went for the 6 core and I'm more than happy with it. Save your money and spend it elsewhere. Another SSD drive? Thearender?

bluemonkey reacted to jonmoore in Oculus Rift - walkthrough - advice please
For what it's worth I think you'll be rewarded in the long run for exploring the workflows required for uniting CAD workflows with real time rendering / game engines. Many of the things you learn will be redundant fairly quickly due to the shifting sand nature of emerging technologies but you'll be part of the journey. And the fact that you have a paying client willing to explore that journey eases the pain of that ever shifting path.

I'm not sure myself whether Unity/Oculus will be the dominant force in the architectural field once the technology matures but it will certainly be a platform that delivers great innovation. Gaming engineers have been specialists in immersion for a good number of years and the move to stereoscopic will be a natural progression.

I think the likes of Bentley/E-on are best placed to simplify the workflow for those working in fields such as architecture. Lumion is after all a gaming engine under the hood (albeit one with stabiliser wheels). ADSK are likely to push Stingray in this direction too as the average Revit user doesn't want to be bothered by even more complexity outside of their specialist field.

The whole AR/VR thing is undoubtedly overly hyped at the moment but that's not to say it's not leading somewhere of value. Lucky you for having a client that's willing to invest in emerging technologies. It certainly beats having to invest the R&D time out of your own pocket.

bluemonkey got a reaction from Sammi in Centre edge transparency
My initial suggestion would be to use 'neon' rather than centre edge and I would probably extrude an oval rather than a circle to make the 'tubes' - I'm not sure how the centre edge/neon will work once you had differenced them? You could try a linelight but this will obviously take longer to render.

Personally I would cheat and do this in photoshop - do each wall as a complete graphic and put the glow over the top - this will render much quicker.

I'd love to see a stereo render export option added to the options. This would be great for rendering movies which you can then play back on google cardboard etc. I think this would be neat addition to the set of presentation tools. Does any other software/renderer do this at the moment.

I think the key is a 3rd party app that does this stuff. FormZ is a great modeller and should continue to focus on that! However ever tighter integration with other applications would help enormously - plugins and standard export/import file formats are the answer.

As for 'design by committee' - in the old days, when we used to produce real scale models, we would always leave bits of furniture loose to engage the client and make them feel involved. One of the problems with 'photo real' visuals is that they can seem too finished! 'Take it or leave it'. Presentations should be part of the design process - somewhere between the brief and the finished product.
