CJTFORM-Z got a reaction from Justin Montoya in Why isn't formz more popular?
    Hi Mattedmonds & all,
I guess I'm a FORM-Z lurka, interested in the product, but never quite got around to making that purchase. Even as far back as bonZai3d, but went the SketchUP route instead. I was on the verge for sure of purchasing at one point, but when Matthew Holewinski left, it seemed FZ-HQ enthusiasm declined as well in my opinion. I lost confidence in their business model.....if one existed. Architecturally speaking, FZ has good parametric construction tools, doors, windows stairs & roofs etc, so this alone should've had more architectural users over from the SU camp. So what went wrong ? well, my case in point, it was product confidence, no real marketing & new release versions taking forever doesn't help.

Looking back at MH's videos is shear joy, but I'm now on a different path as not going down the SU subscription direction, strange how things have turned out.

I'd also like to note, I've never been brain washed into purchasing AutoDesk products, so overpiced for what they offer. I've used DataCAD & SketchUP for years now & currently learning ArchLine-XP, a BIM capable product with an enthusiastic company one can talk to with lots of YOUTUBE video tutorials.

    Hi Alan,
Good effort, I think this proves quick videos even by novices aren't that daunting to make, well done & thanks for sharing. Heck.......Fz-HQ may be calling you for some help.. 😁

ZTEK, Thanks for sharing. Very useful information.
I also use Keyshortcuts extensively, however, I felt it was more appropriate in the video to show clicking icons.
I've revised the video to show the process using key shortcuts.  I use Ctrl+Middle Mouse for Set View.  One doesn't leave the Pick tool command by using a key shortcut for the Set View.

CJTFORM-Z got a reaction from Mike_Concentric in Long awaited Draft Layout App.
    To all,
I thought I'd continue this topic under this heading as wasn't aware initially it was discussed in some detail prior, hence the link above.
As I noted before, the SU-LAYOUT separate programme is really just for preparing your drawing sheets with some 2D tools etc for that purpose. So, the FZ version when it was first released, I guess was meant to emulate that principle function but was never too sure how users got on with this.
Anyway, trying to play catchup on this subject, I now see the new FZ-ver-9 release notes (as copied below) suggests to some extent, the (old) DRAFT-MODULE is now combined with the previous separate LAYOUT programme & is now called: DRAFT-LAYOUT.
It certainly is an interesting move, however I get the feeling & reading some other posts, users who work in FZver-6 as well, will still feel their work flows difficult to attain.

    form•Z Draft Layout
Draft Layout is a new app that combines the features of the classic form•Z Drafting environment (v6 and earlier) and the layout environment of form•Z 7/8. This includes the separate draft and layout spaces from v6 and the sheet management and dimension styles from v 7/8.
Draft Space is a real world scale 2D environment. This environment is ideal when you need to work on 2D data at its actual size. Layout Space is a paper scale 2D environment. It is designed for multi sheet layouts of drawings. form•Z Draft Layout and it can open classic form•Z Drafting files directly!
The updated FML file format maintains a draft and layout space for each project. The FML format is now much more efficient than previous versions (i.e. files are smaller).
When starting a new Draft Layout project, you can choose to start in Draft or Layout space. The Layout mode item in the Display menu indicates if you are viewing the layout Space. Use this to switch between spaces.
Layout Space now has a number of features found in the classic form•Z color drafting environment: Color Palette, Draft Pane creation and selection tools.

Just want to say Thanks for the sharing to everyone here.  I really love seeing all the passion for formZ and knowing I'm not alone in the world.
I don't often have to create detail drawings for my work.  We hand off the final concepts to a CAD dept expert,  where they work their magic to create real, usable shop drawings.
However, with that in mind, whenever I do want to create a detail type drawing for Estimating, I just do so in 3D using the Dimension and Callout tools.  Extra layers and extra files help to hide the unneeded model info (Now using Scenes since being told about them!), but if the main project and all the models get updated I would have to start it all again from scratch.  Does Layout fix that?  Does it create a reference to the main FMZ project and get automatically updated if the project gets updated?  I would use that if it did and was as easy to put together a document as just saving JPGs and compiling a PDF.
That's something were missing.  The Best Practices Workflow.  Documentation and/or videos showing how to use these powerful tools.  I don't think it's obvious to many long time users, or even new users.
I believe Paul Helm made many of the videos we all used in the past and he was great at taking a sample project and explaining a few tools. I still reference the formZ animation videos!  Each video was short and direct about particular topics, without being too long or intimidating.  Layout needs this and probably all of formZ v9 for it's Tools and more since the interface has changed.  VRay for formZ needs it as well.
I understand this is a big undertaking, and without volunteers, perhaps ADS is willing to hire someone with the expertise and passion for formZ who can do just what we need here?  I think that could be a huge first step and the videos on YouTube would also serve as valuable marketing material.  I'd particularly like to see some direct comparisons to competing products like SketchUp that could show how much more powerful and efficient formZ is out of the box, maybe a sample project like a simple building gets built in each program from start to finish?  formZ free should certainly be the hobby 3D printers/Makers dream software, powerful, free, upgradable.  Let's show some videos of it being used for that!

Keep up the suggestions folks!  Problems presented with possible solutions are always better heard.  Always.

In Januari 2017 I started a thread about the alternative way how to get 2D drawings.

I also hope, like many others, drawing 2D will as rock solid as the 3D is, (more or less) Hopefully ADS will think about solutions to generate 2D output the way they did when developing the 3D modelling program. The 3D environment is very well developed in my opinion.
Who thinks automation is the solution, 2D drawing will automatically updates when the 3D model changed? I do not believe in it, as long as it is not rock solid. With everything that is "automatically" done for you, you do not have control anymore. I like to see we could stay in the 3D modeller, then make 2D drawings as easy as it is to model 3D. I think it's a way of thinking. FormZ 3D is wonderful, compare to many other programs. It would be interesting to see if ADS develop 2D output as simple as to use the 3D modeller.
If this can be done with plugins to use other CAD programs... why not?
    If not... ???

    I miss it tremendously
it would be great, but I do not think that is envisaged ...

In the past and up to v.6, one could use the drafting module in FormZ to draw just about anything in 2D with accuracy and ease.  With Layout (and unless I am missing something), unfortunately this is not the case anymore.  I understand that FormZ is not a drafting program.  Nevertheless, I only hope that AutoDesSys will consider restoring (and even improving) some of the older drafting capabilities that allowed us to draw anything (from annotated site and floor plans to construction details) in real and not scaled measurements.  Having said this, I believe that creating frames and sheets in Layout with 3D views being directly linked to models could be a great feature to consider.
