    I love FormZ but....

One of the things that holds me back in FormZ is the lack of tools to generate realistic surface texture on an object. More often than not i have to export models from FormZ into other programs to add raised patterns to the surface of my models. Displacement mapping in FormZ may as well not exist as if crashes frequently and often takes hours to produce the simplest textures. Bump mapping is also limited as you do not have the ability to adjust the depth of the map effectively and realistically. Please, please, please take learning from Solid Works, Maxwell & Thea which have much quicker and easier versions of both displacement and bump maps.

    Hi All,

Struggling with coming up with a good way to model the bowl and cup in the attached picture. Does anyone have any good ideas to get me started?

    Thanks

    Excellent work guys!
You know, it's posts like these where people exchange ideas, techniques etc. that keep me visiting this forum.

Nice work Pipo! You got the hang of it for sure.

On the seat, what I would do is start with a rectangle.
Inset the bottom face, and push it up to form the hollow.
Then start manipulating the geometry with the standard techniques.
This took me about 20 minutes or so just "eyeballing" it.
It's not perfect but is on the right track.

    Hi Dave

    Basically you nailed it.
The only short cut is to use trim&stitch instead of two way surface split. This way in the end everything is already stitched.

I think i got there in the end.
Here is a list of the steps based on the ghosted work Dan left:

    1. Create the scallop shape by drawing a half profile with the vector line tool. Mirror copy and Nurbs blend the two halves together.
    2. Nurbs reconstruct the new shape to have a length & depth of 2, to give the shape a center line. Move the centre out to curve the shape.
    3. Create the cup body by revolving a vector line.
    4. Rotate copy the scallop shape around the cup body.
    5. Two way surface split the scallop shapes with the cup body.
    6. Delete the unwanted parts.
    7. Stitch the remaining parts and round.

Thanks for all the help Dan, if there's any shortcuts to what i've outlined please let me know!

Hutchy1980 got a reaction from japedkat in Surface textures & embossing
    Hi All,

I have to create a lot of models that have textured surface pattern, is there a good method for creating embossed geometry on the surface of an object? Attached are some ceramic vases with the type of embossing i have to emulate, i tend to fake it with bump maps but more often that not these tend to look unrealistic and lack depth. I have also experimented with displacement maps but found this glitchy and tends to take an age to displace the geometry.

Any help\guidence would be much appreciated.

Hutchy1980 reacted to Tech in Chris Yessios Retirement announcement
    Dear formZers:

After 25 years, it is with highly mixed feelings that I announce my retirement from the position of President and CEO of AutoDesSys Inc. Alexandra Yessios, VP for Marketing and Sales is also retiring. But I am happy to let you know that I leave my post in good hands, to David Kropp who is taking over as President and CEO of the company.
I have been working part time the last couple of years as my wife and I gradually transitioned into spending more time with our children and grand children away from Columbus. Dave, as the co-founder of AutoDesSys and fully knowledgeable of the state of affairs in the company, has been running it quite efficiently and successfully, which confirms that AutoDesSys is in good hands.

I wish to take this opportunity and wholeheartedly thank you all for your support and love for form•Z over the past 25 years and I like to think that all of us here at AutoDesSys were able to contribute a bit to your professional achievements with the 3D tools we offered. It has been a joyful ride full of excitement and discoveries. So many techniques the younger users take for granted today became causes for celebrations in the past, as we pioneered major steps in the development of the digital tools. I have no doubt that the evolution is still in progress and I am hopeful that I may still contribute some while away from the routine of the daily practicalities.

I wish you the best in the pursuit of your objectives and goals.

    Chris I. Yessios, PhD
    Past President and CEO

    mjlarson21,

If render speed is a an issue, and you don't have Thea, using a transparency map is the way to go.  While this is technically a 6.7 file, this is how I still do backlighting for logos.

When I first started out of school about 16 years ago, our computers sucked and we had to learn to fake a lot of effects.  This is one of the effects I still use today.

This is also why I need to check out Thea.  One of the many things on my to-do list.

Hutchy1980 got a reaction from jsiggia in More Intuitive BZ line tool
    Hi Tech,

When FormZ 8 was released i gave some feedback regarding the bz line tool which was bumped by a few users. In older versions of FormZ the BZ line tool worked in exactly the same way as Illustrators pen tool when drawing curved lines, which i think is far more intuitive and easier to use than the current version. Will there be an future option or update to allow users to draw in this way?

Here's my first attempt, I think it takes some practice to get good results, mainly playing with the vectors before sub-dividing.
