  1. I only had a little brain power to give this while I was in the hospital. I'm home as of Monday after 26 days inpatient care!

I understand what your'e saying about animating objects that then move through the space. Sounds like an easy parent/child relationship they could add. I just went back and edited the word "easy" out of that sentence, because... what do I know?

I mostly do concert venue and large events. For me, theatrical lighting that I can easily change color settings on to go with different screen options with the right atmospheric glow are important. Also having large LED walls that emit light onto the set around them. Having many instances of one component (audience seating) and importing different casual rental furniture arrangements are also common to my work issues in FormZ.

I've been using V-ray which creates nice results, but the render times are not acceptable for clients that revise the request the morning of a presentation.

    hi dpwr,
Martin Krasemann's videos are in my opinion the easiest way to learn TM
They are available on the Youtube channel
Then there is an unofficial but very popular facebook page...
For specific problems do not hesitate to raise the questions to the support
If you see things that seem problematic and for which you can't find a solution, contact me jldaureil[at]alicepro.fr
We can escalate to development manager through the restricted beta testing forum

Excellent, jldaureil! Thank you for putting these up. I'll check them out and dive in!

    hi dpwr,

Thanks for answering, and sorry to hear you are down, I wish you a speedy recovery.

I am actually a whippersnapper with Twinmotion, I just did a 4k animation for a product launch that two years ago would have been considered a miracle. I can't make combined motions, and I want to import .fbx animation into it from outside sources. This is why I know I must take the Unreal 5 road now. I just am not good with the new lighting in it right off the bat. I will look into GI/lighting tutorials for Unreal 5, it is really awesome.

Thanks, John. I'll look into that too. What is features are attracting you to Unreal 5 over just using Twin Motion? I'm looking for renders that look nice but don't take as long as V-ray on my MacBook Pro. Animation is something I've done in the past, but being able to do it more quickly would allow me to do it more often.

  4. John, did you find any good resources online for learning Twin Motion? I know they have a lot on their website.

I'm on day 20 of being admitted to a hospital for a systemic fungal infection. Looks like I'll be here another week or two and now that I'm feeling a little better I find myself with some time on my hands.

  5. Hi - I'm coming back to this to say (again) that I would love to have this functionality (again) in FormZ.

I have been launching 6.7 on an old machine to import 40+ images at a time, and then opening that file in 9.2 on my workstation to speed the importing process.

Yesterday I couldn't find my USB key for 6.7.

I came here and read instructions for 8.5, tried it in 8.6 (imported well, grey names and all) and found the images show in the materials window but when applied in shaded mode on the model they show as a bright white. They render in render zone fine, it's just impossible to know what is placed and mapped until I render. Which is a drag.

So, another request for FormZ to include this or get Chris Lund the things he needs to update the script. I would HAPPILY pay developer ware on this. ❤️

  6. I can share that I'm struggling with these same issues on a MacBook Pro M1 Max. I got the top of the line, delivered in December. I hoped for speedier v-ray rendering.

While working on the M1 Max in January I experienced a lot of issues with lagging geometry in wireframe and quickdraw. Support suggested turning off Selection Preview under Edit and turning off antialias and smooth object options in display options.

I experienced odd behavior in the modeling tools, where a tool hovered over would not pop-out the row of options below it. The workspace doesn't remember where windows are placed on a dual monitor setup. there were other peculiarities I'm forgetting now as well. Very frustrating.

All the zip and quickness of FormZ in the past is lost on this very expensive machine.

I've retreated to my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro and taken it off eBay for now. The M1 makes a great machine for invoicing and watching shows.

I really enjoy reading this level of expertise. Don't understand much though.  😄

    Thank you and keep going.

Seriously. I was reading the forum and then logged in just so I could "like" bbuxton's post above. I appreciate the knowledge I get from this forum.

  8. Ah, no to the IES file, but I'll download that and see what I can get to happen. The beam is one part, the pool of light on the floor is another. Looking at the example image again, the chair shadows look like there is another light creating the pool on the chairs and floor, different from the theatrical instrument lights at the ceiling.

I'll go back and check specularand other settings, and I talked with Brandon about the bloom issue. He said he wasn't aware of it at that point yet.

Yes to V-ray 5. I have a lot of hopes for that. I'm disappointed a lot of the features of V-ray still aren't working with Imager after years and multiple versions of FormZ. Imager is essential to my work flow.

I have a reasonable theatrically lit environment for Renderzone, but would like the emitter glows and better look of V-ray. And Twin Motion is also really interesting, especially for animations.

There aren't any. A light only projects a single image texture. Unlike a material texture, It cannot be tiled or edited.

Interesting... the result I got looked like it was tiling the image map. What I want is a single image texture like you say. I'll try another map and see what happens!

  10. Oh, and:

    4. Textures added to a v-ray cone light repeated at a smaller scale than wanted. I couldn't figure out how to map the "projected" texture. For example, instead of the gobo pattern light in the image above, i had maybe 5x5 or more like 10x10 of the image repeated in tiles with no way to adjust the size of the texture.

    Where are those controls?

  11. I have an "acceptable" image for delivery... but I'm still not getting some things to work well.

I have a working light plot except:

    1. V-ray Sphere lights render as a cage showing segments even when the visibility is checked off. Support advised to deselect "affect camera rays" in the Volumetric Environment tab of the v-ray settings pallet. Unfortunately this cancels out any "beam" that my stage lights were making in the environment.

    2. The lighting instruments I'm using to wash the audience are represented by cone lights. I got nowhere close to the effect of color blending and softness of the example image I posted. Eventually went with a solid wash on the chairs.

    3. My emitter materials (glowing LED edges, LED strip lights) look good with the Bloom settings in the v-ray frame buffer. However, when I send images through Imager the Bloom Effect doesn't happen and my emitter materials resemble the constant shader in Renderzone.

IS anyone else having this issue with sphere lights? If so, what are you using instead?

Is it possible to keep the Bloom Effect in Imager renders, or to post-process Imager renders in v-ray to add the Bloom Effect back in?

  12. Thanks, Justin!

I've been trying different things and tweaking a lot of settings.

I brought in a Renderzone project that i use for this type of environment and spent yesterday and last night moving lights and converting non-V-ray (mostly projector lights) to cones. It's cumbersome that light groups don't work to control color, intensity and cone.

I ran into a problem with V-ray sphere lights showing as wire frame looking objects even with visibility turned off, and I'm working to get the multi-lights working with each other.

I'll post some progress when I can. Thanks for the helpful suggestions above!

  13. I'm having trouble creating stage lighting in V-ray. Is anyone creating events that show lighting effects like in the attached image?

I learned to get this in RenderZone, but don't understand the V-ray tools. I've experimented with plane, mesh and sphere lights but I'm not getting anywhere.

Are there any tutorials or pointers for the instrument lights above (I watched a little of a god-light tutorial for 3DS Max, which wasn't helpful), the light wash on the audience, and the gobo lights? Do you still use a dome light in this setting? What about the ambient light control in the lights palette, is that still used with a dome light?

I feel like a beginner all over again, and it's fun!
