  1. Nicholas Reachi Updated

The driving idea behind this composition is layered complexity and tectonic relationships. The layering of spatial arrangements of linear elements allows secondary and tertiary readings. Overlaid linear elements establish explicit and implicit spatial boundaries. The composition is viewed from multiple directions. By applying a reflective material for the tower, the visual relationships of overlapping and interacting members are increased to allow an abstracted reading of the information available within the tower. Cleaving reflections are contrasted with matte and colored elements to highlight members that are continuous from one end of the tower to the other. This creates a physical continuity that grounds the composition, allowing for a more recognizable reading across different viewing angles. What is hidden within the tower reflects several times across multiple surfaces. The effect creates a visually complex composition of multiple layers of information.
Intro_Text : My name is Nicholas Reachi, age 25 and a graduate student of architecture at Texas Tech University. I enjoy the technical aspect of architecture just as much as the artistic, and like to explore the the physical and psychological nature of uncomfortable spaces in my work while maintaining a project's functionality and habitability. This project was created for a graduate studio focused on constructed improvisational design using FormZ as a primary modeling and exploration tool, working on an architectural composition freed from the constraints of program and site.

  2. Aubrey van Niekerk Updated

My name is Aubrey van Niekerk, and I am a graduate student at Texas Tech University obtaining my Masters degree in Architecture.  I was in Bennett Neiman's Topical Studio and was introduced to formZ to create our final projects for the semester.  The program was great to use, and yielded graphically striking results.

Project Description: The inner workings of a refrigerator generates the origin of a series of iterative design decisions. A sequence of implicit spaces are defined and realized, traced and diagrammed. Implications of thick and thin, inside and outside, within and without are determined in figurative drawings that then inform physical reliefs, further developing the nature of the sequence. Layers are formed, pushed and pulled creating spaces in between and are framed and supported. Finally, these elements already defined are multiplied, stretched and distorted to become mechanics that create a new whole. A tower comprised of the history of the iterative process with a new identity and direction. Transparent volumes are introduced to encapsulate intricacies, some of which are further defined by bold color. With each step building off of the previous, we arrive at a new sequence of spaces, enriched by its own creative process.

  4. Wagger, Klaus Updated

    Bäd Haering, Austria

    waggerkur@eunet.at

"I am a freelance illustrator based in Austria, with a focus on technical illustrations. I have been in the business for about 20 years doing jobs for KTM, Siemens, VW, Swarovski, Rosenbauer, Mille Miglia etc., trying to stay as independent as possible and have fun at the same time. I started using form•Z when my clients started giving me CAD files from different systems that I had to figure out how to handle. So I looked for a software that could deal with different file formats, was precise, and could be run on a Mac. This led me to form•Z, which I have been using since."

"I am a traditional illustrator and use form•Z primarily to create mass models to select potential views for watercolor illustrations. We became involved in the project shown here at an early stage and we produced a variety of renderings showing different design alternatives. As the client was looking for a unique and distinctive design, form•Z allowed us to clearly present our concepts and the client was able to completely understand our designs. form•Z is a staple in my studio. It allows you to model fast and RenderZone renders very good images for presentation."

  10. D.S.E Updated

    Tel-Aviv, Israel

    http://www.dse.co.il
    design@dse.co.il

"Design Service and Engineering (D.S.E) established in 1973. Since then we are designing a very large variety of products for different industrial sectors. D.S.E was founded and is managed by Miki Ganor, who majored in industrial design at the Illinois Technological institute. He is joined by Dan Manoim and top class academically trained designers with years of experience, who are each offering a personal style, thus creating a system rich with ideas an innovations and yet based on production.

We offer a variety of design services. Starting with the design concept, that's where form•Z plays a major roll, appearance models, prototypes, down to manufacturing files using other high-end CAD programs. Each of our workers is equipped with a form•Z workstation and we use that tool to express our ideas quickly and freely, but with a CAD level precision. This way we keep the gap between the concept and the final product minimal. On the other hand our clients enjoy the amazing output of RenderZone, which in many cases is used for product brochures months before it's actually manufactured.

"As a freelancer with nearly 20 years experience dealing with all sorts of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects in New York City, I have come to rely on the versatility and great compatibility form•Z offers in translating all sorts of data sets encountered out there in the design world.

And once the design information is brought in, form•Z is the quickest yet also the most capable modeling package out there to create real solid-geometry models that play well with the demands of serious lighting and rendering tasks. Not to mention the constant "torture" of continual adjustments required by my clients as the visualization process informs the design process.

I'm very excited by the huge improvements I'm discovering every day as I get to know form•Z 7, and the partnership with Maxwell Render and forthcoming other major render engines, which will continue to enhance form•Z as the modeler of choice for creative designers and visualizers."

    awest@avicom.net

"I have been using form•Z for over ten years now and it continues to be an indispensable tool in my practice. There is simply no other program that allows me the flexibility and speed to quickly provide my clients images of their projects. The ability to execute 3D visualizations in real time has become a requirement for many complicated projects. Allowing my clients to analyze the form, material, and lighting of a project from its inception has allowed them to further stretch their imagination. Furthermore it allows for an understanding by all parties involved that only rarely existed before. form•Z continues to expand in ways that open up new opportunities for me and my clients without compromising speed or stability. Technical support has been extremely helpful and patient during those rare moments of frustration and it always provides an acceptable way around a problem."

  17. Alexander Gogl Updated

I love formZ for the convenience (and power!) of its tools and interchangeability. I use it for quick design studies in architecture, urban design, furniture design, object design, and exhibition design.

When I started studying architecture in Innsbruck I used to draw with Rhino3D, but changed to formZ when I had the feeling that progress was slowing down with Rhino. I was pleased to get my hands on a software where one can construct and model likewise. I am happy that there was a lot of progress in the development of formZ the last years.

Today I have the impression that I am still the only one who uses formZ at my university. More and more of the other students are using Rhino3D because it has a scripting plugin (grasshopper) that has a good interface and is even for people with no coding experience easy to work with. Also teachers and older students actively promote the use of Rhino and give free trainings.

This makes me kind of sad, because here, nobody really seems to appreciate the quality of formZ as a modeling and construction software capable of a lot of things. Yes, it does come short in terms of scripting, but maybe in the near future scripting will become more user-friendly in formZ too?

I designed the project by extensively using the formZ scripting language of formZ6. I used it to link the geometry of NURBS with a underlying mesh which was derived from the spatial program of the bath, and I also manipulated the geometry of the NURBS by creating an algorithm which transforms the points of the NURBS according to the clearance between the points of the mesh and according to the altitude of those points.

The whole design and visualization was done in FormZ. I later edited the cgis in Photoshop and drew plans in Vectorworks based on the data in the FormZ model. I also built a physical model by slicing the design vertically along the longitudinal axis of the building in formZ and sending it to a laser cutter.

FormZ allowed me to manipulate and evaluate (dynamic sections, multiple cameras) my design very quickly and to exchange my data without minimal friction with other devices or software. It is always splendid to work with formZ. I only wished that the coding interface in formZ was more dynamic and user friendly.

  20. Yingxi Ji Updated

I am yingxi Ji and originally come from China. Currently a senior graphic design major student, graduating from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the spring of 2017. my work is versatile, utilizing print, web and multimedia, as well as more experimental photographic design elements. Besides designing, I am super into furniture and industrial design. I love to make graphic shapes turn into 3D.

I am submitting two projects I have done for my digital fabrication class. I modeled both of them in form Z and digitally fabricated. I experimented how to make organic shapes in Form Z and then I was thinking the organic shapes I created really looks like traditional chinese window pattern. So I used this elements created a little desk.

This 'Twisted Vase' might be one of my favorite projects I have done. I like the idea of having two shapes together and when the vase was turning around, the shapes looks slightly different from different angels.
-'Twisted Vase' was printed by two different progress. the black frame part was generated by CNC and hand finished wood. The inner twisted part used gypsum printer 3d systems.

  25. Katie Eastman Updated

My name is Katie Eastman and I recently earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture degree at Ohio University in the spring of 2015, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude! At OU I also focused in graphic design, video game development, real estate and other areas of fine art. Throughout my schooling and free time, I enjoy experimenting and creating with different mediums and searching for new programs to teach myself. I have always been intrigued by digital art, especially those utilizing 3D modeling and animation. With formZ I have been able to explore ideas and visually communicate my designs clearly and well-rendered.

FormZ was the main program used in the Interior Architecture studios at Ohio U. This project was created in order for students to teach themselves formZ through the process of making objects. By thinking out-of-the-box, these 3d mechanical pieces could then be arranged in ways to create conceptual environments and spaces within spaces. Although this project was a crash course in formZ, it ended up being one of my most unique projects that I am proud of! Besides this submission, I also utilized formZ on multiple other projects including a bar/restaurant and art gallery!
