I have been using form•Z since 1997, when I did a Masters Course in Digital Media and Architecture at the Mississippi State University, while studying Architecture in the Netherlands under the late professor Charles Calvo. Since that day, I have used it for all my modeling, both in architecture and interiors. A truly wonderful package and so very highly versatile. It's contiuous development alongside the needs of the users makes form•Z an unique and powerful tool.

  3. Sink Combs Dethlefs Updated

    Brian Parish
    Denver, Colorado

    http://www.sinkcombs.com
    parish@sinkcombs.com

Sink Combs Dethlefs has been designing sport and recreation facilities since 1962. Working closely with representatives from municipalities, universities, and professional sports teams to create creative, efficient, and cost effective designs that meet the specific needs of the owners and users.

“Since coming to Sink Combs Dethlefs in the spring of 2000 to launch their 3D Visualization Department, I have utilized form•Z as an integral part of the design and presentation process. The ease of import/export allows our design team to move directly to construction documents from conceptual models, or to create stunning presentation graphics from the existing CAD data.

As a 10 year user of form•Z, I am continually impressed by the improvements in the modeling tool set and rendering capabilities. Always a strong polygonal modeler, the powerful nurbs tools now allow me to create any form imaginable. Layer and light grouping allow me to keep track of the multiple design and lighting options as a project evolves.”

"DRS Product Design started on a partime basis in 1995. I have been working fulltime on my business since the fall of 1999 and form•Z has been the primary digtial design tool throughout this process. Having used form•Z for 5 1/2 years, together with Photoshop, I have steadily worked to market my Lamp while also providing freelance 3D modeling and rendering services. My clients for this portion of my business are primarily from the building construction industry with some 3D work occuring in the manufacturing sector."

  8. Rush, Richard W. Updated

    Architectural Illustration
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

    http://www.richardrush.com

"As an architect specializing in architectural illustration services, I began using form•Z RenderZone exclusively for all modeling and rendering work as soon as it became available on Windows. form•Z's incredible scope of capabilities and refinement assures me that the only limitations on what I can accomplish is my abilities and not the software. AutoDesSys, on a regular basis, manages to find ways of expanding form•Z's capabilities in areas that I could not have even imagined and at the same time responds to suggestions from users. It is the close communication that the company maintains with its users that I think is responsible for much of the refinement of form•Z. When I need technical assistance, their knowledgeable people are readily available by telephone - not hidden behind a wall of automated answering devices, voice mail, and placement on hold. Since no software exists in a vacuum, the large and expanding number of import/export formats allows me to work easily with 2D/3D files from outside sources, and to export files that can be used by others. Over the years of using form•Z I have literally allowed my livelihood to depend on this software and the company behind it, and they never let me down."

  12. Ropek, Rafe Updated

    Berthoud, Colorado

"My work takes me in two directions. I am a sculptor who creates large scale public art projects. These works can be seen at www.ropek.net. I use form•Z as a design tool as well as a visualization tool for final presentation of the work. There is nothing better than being able to show a client exactly what they are going to get. form•Z allows me the flexibility to render whatever I conceive. I am also a 3D computer artist, this being a media of which I have just been scratching the surface. My work here has been used in advertising and entertainment. My website, www.3Dmental.com has much of my computer art. I love the power of form•Z. It is satisfying to come up with an idea and be able to create it very smoothly."

    Powder Springs, Georgia

    pmrdesigns@mac.com

"In the exhibit industry speed is truly more essential than in other design disciplines because we work strictly on speculative design. If the job does not sell we do not get paid for design. Here is where form•Z really excelled. I have seen the work of some of the people I have taught only a couple of weeks later and been truly amazed. form•Z makes even the most amateur designers look seasoned. form•Z is so intuitive that you begin to design on the computer directly instead of using the software just as a means of presentation. Designing on form•Z allows me to truly work in the round, rather than flying around in my mind's eye and hoping it translates to paper later.

So, in closing, I thank you all. As auto•des•sys moves onward I am happy and proud to continue this journey with you into the future."

  17. Reynolds, Richard Updated

    Malibu, California

    rar3@shoreline-wireless.com

"I've changed my career focus since I started working with form•Z. Being an Art Director required lots of coordination - making sure information was getting to all the designers, ensuring the progress of workflow. Since using form•Z, though, I've discovered my passion. It has allowed me to enthusiastically embrace drawing up set designs."

Currently, Reynolds is hard at work on the upcoming sure-to-be blockbuster Terminator 3, using form•Z for the previsualization of the film's entire set. This is no easy process. "The previsualization of a set requires repeated iterations. Often times the design will be OK'd by the Art Director, the Production Director, then it gets all the way up to the construction crew...and someone changes their mind. You have to start all over again. We usually end up creating four to ten versions of a set before we can settle into something that everyone's happy with."

Because of this, form•Z has become integral to Reynolds' success.

"I now work exclusively in form•Z. It has greatly expanded my abilities to present sets in a variety of formats in a short amount of time. When using traditional media in the past, I could only produce one rendering of a set in the same amount of time it takes to produce ten in form•Z! form•Z has made me more valuable to my art department."

After completing the previsualization of a film's set, Reynolds uses form•Z's drafting capabilities to create drafts from which a construction crew builds a set.

"Most people in this business are heavily trained in AutoCAD. They're usually stunned to see that I can create such high quality drafts in form•Z. With other applications, it's a pain to continually export and import files into different formats. Files are constantly passed back and forth between designers, directors, and construction crews. To put it into perspective, I've already created 8 drafts for the set of Terminator 3 that have made it to the construction crew and have been sent back at the last minute. form•Z is great for me because it allows me to keep the drafting and modeling files together, avoiding any problems or confusion."

  19. Pollack, Steven Updated

    Glencoe, Illinois

    http://www.digitaljeweler.net
    stevenp@digitaljeweler.net

"I learned about Rapid Prototyping and about how large manufacturers were using CAD/CAM to produce perfect master models. I researched all the CAD products at the time and chose form•Z due to several recommendations from those in the rapid prototyping field as to its intuitive modeling, relative ease of learning, and relative low cost."

Here's how it works when making a ring: Pollack starts by creating the "finger hole cutting tool," which is just an extruded circle of the proper diameter for the finger size. He then places solid models of gemstones which he has created over the years, scaled to the sizes being used. Then he creates the ring itself usually by extruding the profile from which he subtracts the finger hole cutting tool. The process is a union of craft and the understanding of technology.

"The shank thickness, prong diameter and length, stone placement and angles, etc. are all built into the model based on my knowledge as a goldsmith, but the numeric entry allowed by form•Z makes these inputs accurate to the specific stones being used."

Once the model is finished, Pollack saves the file in .stl format for output to Rapid Prototyping equipment. The machines print hot wax in 2D with the third dimension added by the table dropping down and printing the next layer on top of the last until the whole 3D model is built.

  21. PEH Architecture Updated

    Sara Dixon
    Boulder, Colorado

    http://www.peharchitects.com/
    peheinz@peharch.com

In high school I always wanted to be an architectural artist. I dabbled in 3d programs like FormZ here and there starting back in 2002. I came to find my niche while interning for PEH ARCHITECTURE though. No one at the firm really did any architecture illustrations. When being hired and going full time I spent my off time bettering my skills at Form•Z and SketchUp & soon fell into the position of "Architectural Illustrator" for the firm. I have worked for PEH ARCHITECTURE for 2 years now and continue to further my knowledge of Form•Z every chance I get. We now have renderings for almost every project we do. I now do freelance renderings as well.

    http://www.pacific-studio.com
    norm@pacific-studio.com

"This is the first project with which I used a rendering program of any kind and form•Z has totally changed the way I deal with clients. I used to spend countless hours constructing actual models for client approval. Now I accomplish the same thing in about a day, along with variations, and the results have been very well received. I have always felt that it is too easy to 'lie' with a perspective sketch. With computer renderings I do not feel I have to apologize for unexpected results-what you see is pretty much what you get. I love them and the clients do too. The renderings shown here were done in the Spring of 2001. Construction of the project started in June 2001. The , 'Wow! It looks just like the picture.'"

  24. OZÖN digital L.L.C. Updated

    Newport, Oregon

OZÖN was formed at the beginning of 2004 to serve our clients as a turnkey design/ rendering/ 3D modeling and visualization studio. Roland Hoyle is the principal. He came from Thrive Design in Portland, where he served as creative director for two years. OZÖN is the continuation of Zedstudioz, which has been using form•Z since 1992.
"The images presented here are the result of collaboration over the years with Peter Craycroft, one of the leading innovators in the field of retail environment design. EyeBox would like to thank Peter and his group at Thrive for their patronage.
We have found form•Z to be the most extraordinary combination of great modeling, superb rendering and, most important of all, a truly dedicated company that really supports its users with excellent technical support. Combined with ElectricImage, we are able to provide our clients with compelling visualization, fly-bys, and walkabouts done under the strictest of deadlines."

  25. Orth Furniture Updated

    Oak Park, Illinois

    http://www.orthfurniture.com

"Orth Furniture was founded in 1976 and specializes in building residential furniture, liturgical and ceremonial objects, and designs for the furniture industry. My process is in equal parts digital design, small shop production methods, and medieval handwork. I was introduced to form•Z while teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and it has now become an integral part of our process from beginning to end. form•Z enables me to explore and communicate fresh, occasionally outlandish, ideas in furniture design with convincing effect. Because the quality of the renderings is rich and satisfying, form•Z is a perfect complement to our highly crafted wood, metal, and glass products. For years I did what I could to render my concepts by traditional 2D means, whereas by nature I am a 3D designer/builder with only moderate ability as an illustrator. Now form•Z enables me to work in my area of expertise as a (virtual) builder and yet attain a persuasive 2D output. I love having to tell a prospective client for the second or third time that a form•Z modeled concept has not yet been built. But form•Z is much more than presentation. From the very beginning of the design process the form•Z display modes, view parameter controls, and navigational tools give me accurate spatial feedback and confidence in what I am seeing on the screen."
