form•Z is second to none as an architectural modeler: Myriad import and export options ensure an efficient work flow between applications; Renderzone provides all the tools necessary for rapid visualization, particularly with the 6.5 release; and intuitive modeling tools grant impressive flexibility, making form•Z an indispensable design tool.

The majority of work in this gallery was produced during my time at Andras Allen Starr Architecture in Columbus, GA. I work between AutoCAD, form•Z, Photoshop, and Illustrator to produce conceptual visualizations, both diagrammatic and realistic. Support for RPC content, object based animation, and other recent improvements have been great for my work flow.

“After graduating from the Ohio State Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture in 1996, form•Z was one of the first major purchases I made. The software has opened up opportunities for me that I only dreamed of in school. I thoroughly enjoy the time I spend creating architectural images. When you can enjoy your work as if it were a hobby, you know you have something good.”

    Project name: Public Radio International

Twenty-first century media is filled with lies and deception. News conglomerates force their biases by filtering the truth and as a result, heighten the chaos and conflict in the world of politics. Public Radio International is a result of the multiplicity of cultural conflicts that come together at the context of District of Columbia, a zone filled with political chaos and imbalance. Public Radio International is a space of contention where both its private and public realm are tasked to bring together confl icting political viewpoints.

Public Radio International uses two confl icting physical geometries of District of Columbia and cultural and the never-ending political imbalance existent in the District, nation, and the world to establish its architectural language. These constant multiple forces fragment and deconstruct the landscape of Washington D.C. to contextualize the site in order to embed the building as part of the landscape.

Public Radio International overcomes the speed of the world of news and media by establishing a transient architectural language. Fragmented pieces are in constant motion to demonstrate a dynamic environment to encourage contentious debates aimed at revealing the truth.

This project was done in an advanced elective design studio that has been positioned in the curriculum for the student that wants to further explore digital design/media through computer modeling and digital representation and provides an opportunity for graduate students from different studios to collaborate. In this course digital design media is understood not simply as a tool for visualization but as a generative design tool and process for the derivation of form and its development/transformation. This is intended as a special topics course that evolves and varies with each faculty member and their particular research interests.

“As an architect who has been using form•Z as a design tool throughout my career, I have found form•Z to be an indispensable element of the architectural, construction, and furniture design aspects of my business. I have utilized form•Z to create everything from paperclips to 16 story buildings. I value form•Z for its ability to combine creativity with accuracy - promoting innovation in thought and design. When the design process is finished, form•Z facilitates the break down of complex designs for ease of construction in the field.

form•Z has helped me to both realize my own ideas, and broaden the lines of communication between clients and myself. A concept can be virtually ‘sketched’ within the software right from the beginning phases of design. Client feedback becomes interactive - since they can be involved at any point of the design development. Having such a strong presentation tool illustrates thoughts so efficiently, clients cannot help but understand my intentions. This alone has been instrumental in pushing the design envelope.”

    "Project: Rambert Dance Company"
The Rambert Dance Company is Britain’s flagship contemporary dance company, it needs a new home for the 21st Century that refl ects these qualities. As a repertory dance company, Rambert is on the road for most of the year, but when they do return home to London it is to relax, recoup, rehearse and also develop fresh new talent. The company has outgrown its current home in Chiswick, West London, and now needs a new base in a more central London location. This would give Rambert the space it needs to create new productions and more of an opportunity to work with the community. The Rambert Dance Company archive was set up in 1982 to record and preserve the company’s repertoire for future generations but currently it has no space to display it. This new facility to house an archive / exhibition space, dance studios, café / bar and theatre in a dramatically re-modelled central London building on Clerkenwell Road designed by this student, creates a place for all the Rambert operations and dreams to flourish.

"I am a freelance illustrator based in Austria, with a focus on technical illustrations. I have been in the business for about 20 years doing jobs for KTM, Siemens, VW, Swarovski, Rosenbauer, Mille Miglia etc., trying to stay as independent as possible and have fun at the same time. I started using form•Z when my clients started giving me CAD files from different systems that I had to figure out how to handle. So I looked for a software that could deal with different file formats, was precise, and could be run on a Mac. This led me to form•Z, which I have been using since."

"I am a French independent computer graphic illustrator. I do both still images and animations for various projects such as book covers, cd-roms, and videos. For all of them, form•Z is for me an indispensable tool. Its accuracy allows the meticulous modeling of complex processes, its flexibility the assurance to realize all that I can imagine. All of these images are taken from a personal project in the tradition of the Terran Trade Authority Books."

I work in the interior design area. I do mostly residential projects. I also design and produce a lot of custom made furniture for these projects.

Form•Z is my primary tool for designing, presenting, and drafting my ideas, specifically now when it is connected with the excellent Maxwell renderer.

We are a small architectural visualisation company based in the North East of England and have been using FormZ for years. We still feel FormZ is the quickest route to photorealism on the market. All of our projects are modelled using FormZ 3.9.5 and all of the images here have been rendered with RenderZone. FormZ’s solid modelling capabilities are also utilised daily with our in house Z Corporation 3D printer, FormZ files are exported as STL file’s and output as 3D physical objects from the printer.
