  13. Industrial Illustrators, Inc. Updated

    Frank Micle
    Harrison City, Pennsylvania

    micle@ix3.com

"Industrial Illustrators, Inc. is a technical/ scientific graphics studio located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1976 and is considered one of the premier technical/ scientific studios in the country. Ours was the first studio in the USA to use a Macintosh computer for technical graphics (1985). Frank Micle is a technical illustrator with 30 years of experience that loves his job. These two cutaway projects replace the traditional airbrush renderings, which Coleman had previously used for over ten years. Changes in structure or materials or new options are modeled and rendered?in a very short time. These models were created without very much customer input, from sketches and on-site photos. form•Z is an eloquent way of creating something cool out of nothing in particular."

  16. Johnson, Luke Updated

    Bridgeport, Connecticut

The Flare Storm is an emergency light and radio for disaster situations. Designed as part of the senior level industrial design studio, the intent is to combine three elements -- a flashlight, an emergency radio, and a hand powered generator. form•Z was used along with sketch development early in the design process to explore the possible product configurations. It naturally followed to continue using form•Z for finalizing the concept and rendering images for the final presentation.

Joe Kuspan and Tom Brosovick, design
    Jonathon Harris, modeling and rendering

This study was used as a design tool in the development of a proposed restaurant space. The project emphasizes a strong gateway, which can be closed off by large rotating gates at the bar, an entry water feature, and various movable art glass wall panels for sound deflection. The space was designed with areas of changing grade, curved sound dampening panels above and large wine storage bays of glass.

Modeled and rendered in form•Z RenderZone; adjusted with Photoshop.

“I am a freelance illustrator working mainly in Advertising. I have been working as such for more years than I can remember, originally producing airbrush and line technical illustrations by hand and latterly by computer. I dabbled with a few 3D programmes without much enthusiasm before I discovered form•Z. I tried a demo version and actually said “wow” on seeing the first render - what the subject was I don’t remember, a chrome sphere I expect- since then I haven’t looked back!
I confess I employ form•Z a great deal more than I anticipated, using it for product concepts, exhibition stands, architectural work and general all round illustration work. I often use it in preference to sketching by hand for many perspectives and objects, using the wireframe/hidden line image as a basis for Adobe Illustrator vector work. Surprisingly I have learnt a lot from the renders it creates and find I am able to produce illustrations in 2D packages with more realism than before. Alongside Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop it is now an ‘essential piece of kit’ in my graphic toolbox. During any spare time at work I try to have a personal 3D project in progress, more often than not of used/dirty subjects which I find more challenging and a change from the clean shiny examples which my clients normally require.”

    San Diego

    al@albertclee.com

BA in economics from University of California San Diego

Master of Architecture from the Newschool of Architecture.

Working in a studio environment, I use form•Z in all aspects of design, from space analysis, schematic design, to finished rendering. It not helps the client to understand a drawing better, but it also helps in the realization of forms. I don't just use form•Z when a project has a budget for it, but even when there is no budget for it, I will use on my own time to help me be a better designer.

  25. Los Angeles Times

    Los Angeles, California

    http://www.latimes.com/
    matt.moody@latimes.com

"These two images are both informational graphics that I did in form•Z and, after rendering in RenderZone, brought them into Photoshop for minor detail work and color correction. I then took them into Macromedia Freehand where they were assembled with text and headlines for placement in newspaper layouts. I have found form•Z to be a very strong program, once you learn how to use it, which may take some time. For certain projects the results are faster and by far superior to what I can do in Freehand and Photoshop, our main graphic tools here at The Times. The flexibility to reuse a graphic, such as the Kursk submarine, is an important element that a 3D modeling program offers. At a newspaper this is crucial since stories often evolve over time. The ability to reuse a graphic element from a different angle or at a different size is important."
