R2D2 got a reaction from AHTOH in Is Thea for FormZ dead ?
    Thea V2.2 has been released
looks like the FZ-Plugin is finally out...

R2D2 got a reaction from andrew in Thoughts on BIM and its impact on FormZers
I am using FZ with vectorworks and revit.
FZ export of dwg/acis works 2018 well for both. (Markus/Hugo)
FormZ: the everyday fun part, but know your workarounds.
Vectorworks: works well to get drawings from FZ/3d import - just what you would wish FormZ layout would be doing.
Revit: works well for quick visuals on realtime / gpu engine from FZ import and eats gazillions of polygons, just like you wish FZ would do.
And yes, if we ever get to see V9 (which I sincerely hope for) it should at least include IFC.
I dont think FZ needs much more BIM capability than that - if you need serious BIM you are most likely not using FMZ anyway.

    That should be correct.
You can test a section at half height: the resulting hexagon then has equal length segments.
(For a built example house google  "Piet Blom cube house")

    R.I.P.
I guess its time to wrap this up, I contacted Thea half a year ago to find out what is going on.
My proposal was to issue an official statement here and call it a day.
This never happened, neither from Thea`s nor ADS`s side, which leaves me in the dust if this was terminated by Thea or outcome of the Vray/FZ venture and terminated by ADS.

    Part from their answer was:

…„It is true that the plugin has been removed from our e-shop but w e continue the support and maintenance of the integration.
There are changes and enhancements to this integration that would let us evaluate better how to proceed in the future regarding its availability.

…please note that you can still use both the plugin and the Studio, as the bundle you had bought contained both of them.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.“…

Bottom line I would be interested if anybody is still using Thea with FZ.
Also if anybody is interested in using my license please let me know and we can try to work something out if a transfer is allowed.

Finally I think we users who bought this (basically DOA) product deserve a statement from ADS and/or Thea here.

    thx

Sometimes I get this (example: some 3D Person) when I try to reduce polys.
Object doctor cant fix it. Any hints apart from trying to unstitch/restitch ?

And what does the error message ask me for ?

I am a big fan of Thea/FZ and bought the plug-in, question is:

    - Development is cancelled due to not enough FZ users buying into it...?
    - ...an update is in the making ?
    - Thea will be integrated into FormZ 9 (wohoo) ?

    Any news here ?

R2D2 got a reaction from Jaakko in Tool Simplification / Consistency
I wasn`t referring to the face normal but the segments direction towards the face.
in the plane example, no segments run towards that face thus it can not "extend" somewhere. (But you can extend the side segments)

(You are right, extrusion and reshape on that square face give the same result, just like "thicken" can do too.)

Reshape does not work when you prepick different objects I think. It does work when prepicking several faces of a (simple) object to an extent though.
(Generally it works best using just no picking at all - so that it finds the face automatically)

Draw a pyramid and cut off the tip now you can:

reshape the upper face up - all remains one object, face dimensions remain (or reshape down, substracting volume)
extrude the face, making a new object
extend the face numerically, where the face is scaled
thicken the face (or the whole object)
    (just as a quick example)

My point is I don`t see it as a battle of the tools but as possible ways to get different results, depending on what geometry you work on.

If you have i.e. the 30 rectangle surfaces to work with, reshape and extend tool does nothing as your objects are 2D (No direction vectors for the face). That makes sense to me.
Extrusion and thicken will work and turn these into solids, pre or postpick, which makes sense too. (THEN Reshape /extend/thicken/extrude faces of these)
Thicken gives a fixed height and direction, extrude allows dragging and num input.
Reshape has numeric input and keeps the moved face "as is" , in face direction or reference plane based; while extend will also work numerically and to a tilted surface and also alter the Face dimension.

Enhancements are of course always possible but you would have to be more specific in detail (or maybe I got the question wrong)

I find the diverse functionality of this set of tools is one of FZ major strengths.

R2D2 got a reaction from 3dworks in FZ future
It appears that after getting vray implemented, ADS is in now hibernate mode.

The silence here is not a good sign, lets hope it is just due to collective effort on the new Version....9.
But if the latter is true why not communicate it ?
On the Forum it appears some new people have appeared, which is good, but FZ need to get the word out and advertise the new rendering capabilities to attract new users.
( i.e. Look at Chaosgroups website, big announcements for Vray for Revit, Rhino and Sketchup - nothing on FormZ (unless you search for it))
Make a rocksolid 8.6.x release and dont overpromise on things to come. my2c

R2D2 got a reaction from Jaakko in vray network rendering setup
While I personally have no need for a Vray rendernode at the moment I also find it odd that this is not included.
(The Thea plug-in came with two nodes if I remember correctly)
Not only is there the question of how to continue modeling your project while rendering, but the pricing/licensing scheme almost makes it look like FZ being the plug-in for Vray.
The two machines you can put FZ on should to be allowed to be set up in way that you can continue work on machine one, including setting up your vray materials etc, and (i.e. while) rendering on machine two.

Just my 2c, not being disrespectful, happy its there finally - but imo 1 node is mandatory.

R2D2 got a reaction from Minaabilk in maxwell upgrade special offer question/GPU
    Hi Pylon,

regarding the upgrade to V4 there is this statement (regarding Studio):

"Mac Users: Maxwell GPU rendering feature is not currently supported on macOS. For GPU rendering, Nvidia graphics cards with CUDA support are required, and Apple does not sell computers which include these at this time."

    But then:
Maxwell | form•Z key feature list: GPU support

Confusing me as I have a macpro with dual GPU (2xGTX960)

Will maxwell make use of these cards when using the maxwell FZ-plugin in OSX ?
And, as long as there is no multi-GPU support: can one of the two cards then be dedicated to rendering only ?

    Thanks

R2D2 got a reaction from Jaakko in FormZ and Rendering options question
The V-Ray Plugin is really working quite well already, and since it runs using multiple GPUs with CUDA, this development also gives some hope that Apple is actually not about to abandon CUDA/Nvidia support in the future.
(That said I have no intention to go for windows...)

This really could be a leap forward for FormZ so lets hope for a stable and reasonably priced release of FZ/V-ray soon...

R2D2 got a reaction from Jaakko in FormZ and Rendering options question
Getting adequate renderings (quality vs. time) out of FZ is a long struggle.

I quit using Renderzone years ago as imo it has not truly evolved over time. (lighting quality/speed)
There are numerous ways to export geometry and render using external software ("rendererX") - at the cost of always exporting/importing and using another package.
I started using Maxwell but it just took too long (but speed has improved and they currently have an upgrade special V4 offer)
Vray has been announced for years but still seems to be in a beta stage, before eventually then sometime becoming a "public beta"...
I bought the Thearender/FZ Plug-in and it really works well, good integration and impressingly fast results. Unfortunately it seems the product has been discontinued, apparently due to lack of interest from FZ users.

So when FormZ V9 is announced (hopefully this year):

    - RenderZone still seems to be the Nr.1 integration from ADSs side ( at least FZ does again special-promote buying into it )
    - Maxwell seems to be the only (and still seriously supported) plug-in for the time being.
    - Vray for FZ is always "almost there" but there is no product or announcement.
    - Thea has a great product on the market - they got it it out long before Vray - but now refuses to sell it.
(which in turn maybe explains Vray taking so long...)

Please ADS (or who else has a thought) can you put this into perspective for these four render-engines regarding V9 ?

Thanks Justin, my Point is not so much about how it all works, there have been and will be ways to get renderings out of FZ.
I want FormZ to succeed (so: its a selfish approach) and evolve. Rendering is not my first priority, but the Thea FZ-plugin finally has been a dream come true. I understand it only is a dream for us users with „officially not OSX supported“ hardware. (So in the „world of success“ : not enough sales to make unless Apple comes back supporting Nvidia/CUDA).

BUT: remember the mid- nineties when FZ was king of the hill (on Mac) ?
The modeller was cool already and Renderzone was a decent engine at the time.
The combination was special. This has been lost due to RZ not keeping up in terms of look and -yes- quality. (not to mention Speed).

My hope is that ADS can find a renewal for this combo of superb modelling/rendering one stop shop. Be it maxwell, Thea or vray one day.
