360 3d movie for google cardboard

I want to make a 360 3d movie for the google cardboard (oculus, something like the rollercoaster movie we've all seen for the oculus!

Does anyone has any experience with this?

It seems not too difficult, but I would prefer it to be rendered in Form Z. I know it can be done in Unity, but I don't want to convert.

Is it to be expected that the camera and the render settings come as standard option in Form Z? I think that these are things to be implemented in Form Z knowing that the 3d viewers are on its way!

The idea for now is to create an animation of a walk through an interieur site, where the the viewer can turn head while the camera is walking through the scene. the camera setting should look something like this. This could be programmed as an extension maybe?

I think there are some techheads that could create this! And Zweb, are you looking into this?

Kind regards

Maybe this is to far fetched for now, but it would be realy nice to see Form Z getting ready for oculus or other 3d virtual kits.

Is there nobody that can shed a light on this?

ZWeb maybe? I'm allready fantasising about the new upcoming form Z viewer with a oculus viewer! I should think that this not to difficult to add?

kind regards

Rudy

I have a client who is very interested in something like this too! We looked into 'occulus rift' but the only way to use this is produce your own app using unity - this seems a bit of overkill to produce a simple walkthrough. The only architectural ones I've seen a bit disappointing

.

We have also been looking at VR panoramics and I've found it difficult to get in-depth information on the subject maybe it just too niche? The info is out there just not a lot of it and difficult to find.

A simple walkthrough app where you can import your own model, add a few 'weblinks/product text/photos' on hotspots could be simple but brilliant - and would kick start a new market - would be very interested to see how this goes.

Yes, this is exactly what I meant. Is this this something that can be implemented in Form Z? Realtime or rendered, interactive or liniar.

Zweb, is this on the list?

Or is this something we can expect from Pylon.

Like Blue monkey said, the step to export to Unity seems too complicated since we have a realy nice shaded render for the interactive mode, and good render options for the liniar mode. And even for modeling with the oculus instead of a monitor seems something worth investigating!

Kind regards,

I think it would be an application developed by another party - to be used by many different 3d applications - but with a common export/import file standard.

I agree the quality of shaded render mode is probably better than most of the interior/architecture stuff I've seen. But although it requires a small image size at the moment ( x 2) it does need to be a very high frame rate for it to feel real.

Maybe it's another use for the dual video cards that come in the current Mac Pro?

Rudy, May i ask if formz's animation tools seem too difficult to learn, (in available time)?

I would think a Youtube which showed one or two variations on this ought to provide proficiency…. Where an average formz user could "see what an animator does, what tools and menus are used, exactly where the cursor clicks, or which shortcuts are invoked, when doing this"

It seems that built in Youtube publishing takes care of movie formatting, (which was a roadblock in decades past)….

I have to admit that i've had reluctance to focus on the animation manual pages, just to get a quick fly around animation. It has been easier to use OSX/ Quick Time Player/ Menu/ File/ New Screen Recording. However this is difficult to time the video properly.

It would seem that formz's  Billboard could display import pictures, into video, while the Shaded Work or Shaded Full displays provide pretty good color, etc...

I would love to "see what is done" with animation tools.

Hi Bo,

For me animating in Form-Z is not to complicated. The tools are prety straight forward, so verything is done with keyframing in my projects. We don't have any complex animating tools like particles, inverse kinetics or dynamics.

I've included some links wich are done almost entirely in Form Z, some editing in aftereffects. The animation editor can be a little intimidating when you start, but there is where the tuning of your motion finds place,, so you have to pull through!

But on the topic: Can Zweb let us in on the thoughts within Autodessys on 3d viewer options?

Kind regards

I completely agree that Virtual Reality headsets will ultimately change the landscape of how we are expected to show our work.  The easiest way I could see incorporating this here would be with FormZ Free or a FormZ Viewer.  But then, you are going to require the users computer to have a faster machine than the typical business laptop.  Controlling the presentation in a conference room with a decent computer would be the best.  Then you could have multiple VR headsets, but you would still likely need for just 1 person to lead the tour.  Having everyone explore the space separately would be a disaster, with each individual ending up in a different place, looking at different details and not necessarily following the presentation.  With a leader handling the navigation, it would be much easier for a casual business person to experience the VR headset.

VR headset hardware is in its infancy, and in the future could potentially handle the additional processing themselves, removing the need for such a fast computer.

Speaking of virtual presentations, I've also used Interactive Shaded mode on a online GoToMeeting where I was given control to share my screen, and able to show a tour of the space interactively, using preset views and the transition effect between them.  It's not perfect though, the video lag meant that by the time I had moved on, they were still seeing something from 3-5 seconds prior.  Also, the limits of FormZ and the OpenGL based Interactive Shader are seen by the non designers who don't understand tiling image maps where there should be just a single logo, and missing Decals that aren't shown in that mode.  It might not apply to some of your industries, but with what we do, branding is king, logos, taglines, graphics... and the inability to show it clearly in the OpenGL Interactive Shading mode is disappointing.  Still, it's a step in the right direction, and I'm hopeful we're starting to see the beginnings of something really exciting.

As the old saying goes... "Careful what you ask for!"

Allowing such a deep exploration of our virtual designs will inevitably lead to more projects being 'designed by committee', as now every person involved will have a new ability to look into details that were usually left up to the designer alone.  The closer we let other people into the design process, the less control of the overall design we 'the designers' will end up having.  If that sounds scary to you, then perhaps you can better understand why I suggested the guided tour method over self exploration.

I'd love to see a stereo render export option added to the options. This would be great for rendering movies which you can then play back on google cardboard etc. I think this would be neat addition to the set of presentation tools. Does any other software/renderer do this at the moment.

I think the key is a 3rd party app that does this stuff. FormZ is a great modeller and should continue to focus on that! However ever tighter integration with other applications would help enormously - plugins and standard export/import file formats are the answer.

As for 'design by committee' - in the old days, when we used to produce real scale models, we would always leave bits of furniture loose to engage the client and make them feel involved. One of the problems with 'photo real' visuals is that they can seem too finished! 'Take it or leave it'. Presentations should be part of the design process - somewhere between the brief and the finished product.
