This year I have organised my models of furniture into numbered assembly groups and isolate each group in turn to name parts effectively and afterwards add serial numbers semi automatically all with the Rename Objects extension.
That leaves 'layers' free to use within any assembly group.
If I had time I would update this tutorial to include the adding of serial numbers [using the fantastically excellent 'rename objects' labs extension] for assembly groups and using the =RIGHT(cell ref;5) command in Open Office Calc to extract the serial number from name with serial number, eg to extract 02004 from a cell which contains 'table top 02004'
I don't need to control the part number following the group number eg 004 but appreciate greatly the fact that I can set the starting number to reflect the group [in this case for assembly group 02 I would use 02001 to start the serial numbers.]
This is great because no matter what part I find on a job, I know which group it refers to and does not require much effort to perform as the serial numbers can be set straight after cleaning up the object names one group at a time with the Rename Objects extension.
Hope that makes sense.
Hoping one day that FormZ pro will fully integrate with CutlistPlus FX like some other modelling programs have done.
