FormZ 8: Problems. Rant!

Support,

I really need to rant here.

When I run into bugs with your program, I usually work around them because I am too busy to sit there and create clean models for you to investigate. Then, you want me to explain step by step how the problem occured. Most of the time I figure, these things are so obvious, they should get picked up before you actually release the software.

Today I ran into problems that really affect my productivity, annoy me like you wouldn't believe, and disappoint me.

1. If you copy-paste a model with several materials, the materials will multiply when pasted in the empty file. We're talking 20+ copies. This is unacceptable.

2. I used the add to project feature, my original file had components: First everything seams great, but suddenly, as I simply tried to delete ghosted objects, the file crashes. When I open the saved file (which I saved prior to the crash, since I know better than to simply trust formZ to be stable) , all of the components get put into layer1, and get exploded. Seriously?!

3. If you work on a mac, all of your materials and components where properly mapped to a shared server drive, then you open the file on a pc, you get garbage components listed on your linked libraries, and your Maxwell render settings, get messed up. (This is the reason I tried to use the 'add to project' feature, and ran into all of the bugs listed above).

I will try to find some time to do screen captures to elaborate on these issues. I hope you don't blow this off as just a simple rant. I've been using this software for almost 17 years. Your developers really need to be a bit more responsible.

Hi Allan,

Sorry you are having trouble.  We do indeed conduct extensive testing, and we have not encountered any of the first two issues with formZ v8.  For issue #3, paths to network drives are stored differently for Mac and Windows, so unfortunately this is as expected.  To solve this, you need to set a search path to the location of the maps on the "other platform," or keep the maps with the project itself so they can be found in the local (to the .FMZ project) directory.

If what you describe for issue 1 and 2 is correct, you shouldn't need to send extensive instructions or screen captures.  Just a file with instructions to copy and paste, or add to project.

Has anyone else encountered either issue 1 or 2 with formZ v8?

Allan,

Regarding the Maxwell plugin and #3:

With your project open OSX, use the Resource Manager add a path to your shared Materials/Textures database. Save the project. Open the project on the Windows machine and do the same. See: http://support.nextlimit.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=16810300

From then on, the plugin should be able to find and automatically re-link all your Maxwell assets when you move your project back and forth. Searching and re-linking happens when you fire off a render, not when you open the project. (This is to avoid wasting time, if you are not rendering during a modeling session.)

Thanks Ben. I understand now.

I just sent you a file containing two objects. They won't render in Maxwell. I checked them with the object doctor and found no problems with them and they don't have any special materials. Win7 64 bit. Latest version of Maxwell and plugin.

Allan,

I feel your pain. I often run into similar frustrations as my projects get to a certain size and then little bugs creep into the behavior of the program and the general speed and performance of Z slows. I think components as a whole cause me the most frustration and have general bugginess and instability.

Support,

While not identical I have had very similar issues to Allan.

1. I had a a file where I pasted a group of components and it created many duplicate components, one for each component pasted.

2. I have recently opened files and receive a error message and all groupings are lost.

3. As reported to Paul earlier, I have files that populate identical surface styles for some component surfaces.

Hi Gary,

There was an issue with earlier versions of formZ v7 whereby Components could cause duplicate Materials, but that has since been corrected, and we have not seen that with formZ v8.  If you are able to reproduce either of the other issues, please send a file to support@formz.com and let us know what steps you are doing to cause this so we can make sure it gets corrected.
