help with basic modelling (mac) - things don't works as they used to!

I'm not sure if it's the latest update but for months I've had problems with boolean operations, splitting surface faces, general, basic modeling. Perhaps, I'm doing something wrong but I never used to have the amounts of weird surface problems, bad booleans, objects that won't allow a suface to be extended (just simple, two blocks, joined with a boolean or a simple cube, split face and extended). Nothing seems to work.

Can I upload a file to be reviewed here? I just want to add to the building layer to the group 3 in this project. I cannot get this to work and it's making my work so stodged with errors that I'm considering a different modeling product altogether. Does Formz work correctly on a Mac? Is it tested thoroughly? Anyone else having these issues?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, I'm starting think this is somehow file corruption. I've now opened a brand new file and started to remodel this shape and things work as expected. It's almost as if the more you work on a file and save it the more errors get embedded, to the point that the objects become unworkable? This is odd.

hi

the roof is not a solid object - it has holes. you can use "Object Doctor" or add missing faces manually

please control the direction of objects.

some of them point inside - use the "Reverse" tool

to add objects to a different layer, you must add a new layer first and then you can use the tool "Set Layer"

hope that helps.

Vielen dank vva, I think the real issue is a corruption in a legacy file I've been taking elements from for a while. I just remodeled that shape in a NEW file and everything works as it should, as soon as I copy an element from the suspected file everything goes screwy again, drag and drop (push pull) creates errors, extra faces, just a list of general problems with object geometry.

I look at the file you linked to , not sure where to find the reverse tool or set layer though or the context in which you suggest using them?

When things like this happen it is almost always due to the introduction of bad geometry.  Finding and fixing it is the only way forward.  I routinely need to import Sketchup files that are complete garbage with missing faces, colinear points, non planar faces, etc.  The first order of business is to use the object doctor on everything.  Then do it again.  And again.  You will find that it usually corrects the geometry after three or four rounds.  If that doesn't work try copying all the geometry and pasting it into  a new file.  If that doesn't work try exporting it out in DWG format and then re importing it into a new file.  Once you get it working try using a handy script from the Form.z site called Obj-fix-reverse.  This will find and invert all your inside out geometry.

Every program allows you to create bad geometry.  The only difference is how tolerant the program is.  Moving too fast is usually the culprit.

Rebuilding from scratch is unfortunately something that often needs to be done.  I still occasionally find myself trying to fix something that would be easier to redo.   One last solution that I sometimes find useful is to back save my model to V6.7 and open it there.  To date that is still the most solid and trouble free version that they ever created.  My opinion of course.

Vaa and Andrew thanks for the contributions!

The boolean operations (and many other advanced modeling operations) need a proper solid to function. These suggestions are all useful techniques to cleanup data. Be sure to start with the Construct solids option enabled when importing files as this applies some logic that is currently only available via the importer (although we are looking at adding this to the project doctor as well).

Another useful technique can be to use the derive face tool on a pre-picked object. This will make an individual object from each face in the project. You can then reverse faces that are the wrong direction, remove duplicate faces etc.... Then use the stitch tool on these objects to re-construct a solid (assuming your faces make a solid).

dmuller, what was the original source of the object that will not boolean?
