I'm not sure if this is my deficiency or formz's.  If it is me there is probably some setting I need to know about.

In my files, if I have an object selected, and I paste a new object, the previously selected object is deleted.  I would like to be able to paste an object without a previously selected object being replaced.

There are frequently situations where an object is used to trim other objects.  That object is deleted by difference, but it is re-pasted for the next similar operation.

Problem it that when I'm zoomed in, it is very easy to select another object accidentally, which then gets accidentally deleted.  This seems to be more of a problem with recent versions of formz due to the enhanced selection capabilities, which I otherwise like.

Paste/delete a selected object is industry standard. Even in a text document, if you select text and then paste, the selected text is subsequently replaced. If you wish to save your selections you may find using the Selection Sets Palette useful.

In the Edit menu there are options to Ghost, Delete, or Keep Operands. Using these options you may determine what happens to the operand object of a Boolean operation. For example if you are subtracting a cube from a sphere, the cube can be deleted, ghosted or kept after the Boolean is completed. It is possible to assign key shortcuts to these menu items to make your workflow quicker and more efficient.

If you choose to ghost the operand objects, those objects can be retained or purged from the file when it is saved (in Preferences). If you choose to save the ghosted operand objects when saving, Form Z will alert you when they become numerous. You have the option to purge ghosted operands at any time from the file by using the “Clear Ghosted Operands” in the Edit menu. Note that objects ghosted manually are not purged by this function.

You can also set up a key shortcut to "Deselect" (from the Edit menu) which deselects all selected objects and can be used prior to pasting to avoid unknowingly deleting wanted background objects.

a requester if user want to delete selected geometry would be useful imo.

but on the same topic, i'm having another issue with the latest versions of FZ right now. when copying and pasting a large number of objects, FZ takes ages. is this something anyone else can confirm? what i do is select a few hundred objects which are parts of a building fassade from one layer and paste them into a new layer. i'm getting a  spinning wheel for 10 minutes now and this is repeatable. i noticed already that FZ takes 10/20 seconds when pasting a much smaller amout of geometry. there should be almost no delay imo.

Thanks to both.  I don't think, though, that industry standard for word processing, carries much weight with CAD.  Vectorworks has never replaced the selected object if some other object is accidentally selected.  To me it is more a question of what might we want to do.

I do appreciate also the insight into managing the boolean operations.  That is smart and I will up my game a bit there.

Back in the early days of fZ, replace selected when pasting was a godsend. Now with the ability to isolate geometry so effectively, I don't see it being very useful. It's pretty confusing for new users. I'm not saying change it, but it's something many people have difficulty with because it's so different than most other 3d apps.
